Post No. 875 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 component's SEC filings as of February 14, 2011.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 12,226.64 down 41.55 points or 0.34% from Monday's close of 12,268.19. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 8 gained, Pfizer was unchanged and 21 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Verizon VZ $36.46 +0.56 1.56% 20,022,132 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was ExxonMobil XOM $82.97 -1.94 2.28% 25,655,120 NYSE.
As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 15.02 down from Monday's 15.03 (year ago it was 16.36); the P/E estimate is 12.81 unchanged from Monday's 12.81 (year ago it was 12.85), and the dividend yield is 2.36 up from Monday's 2.35 (last year it was 2.70). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,615.50 down 5.49 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,620.99. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.85 down $0.18 from Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $54.03. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $47.41 (HPQ/JPM) down 0.02 from Monday's median closing price of $47.43. The lowest volume was United Technologies UTX $84.93 -0.28 0.33% 2,817,432 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $14.77 -0.12 0.81% 108,631,641 NYSE.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $549 ($162,099 - $161,550)
MarketWatch Tuesday 2/15/11 4:56 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks declined modestly Tuesday after economic reports showed retail sales climbing less than expected in January and the cost of imported goods rising. “Today there’s a bit of a pullback, but we’re coming off a multimonth high,” said Stuart Freeman, chief equity analyst at A.G. Edwards. “We’ve been inching forward pretty consistently, and any little corrections seemed to be closed again by the end of the day,” added Freeman in dismissing the significance of a half-percentage drop in the major stock indexes, given their near-relentless rise in recent days and weeks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 12,227, -41.55, -0.34%) fell 41.55, or 0.34% to end at 12,226.64. Twenty-one components in the index fell, while 8 rose and one was unchanged. Shares of Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM 82.90, -0.07, -0.08%) led the blue-chip retreat, down 2.3%. The S&P 500 Index (SPX 1,328, -4.31, -0.32%) fell 4.31 points, or 0.32%, to 1,328.01. Among its 10 industry groups, energy was off the most and utilities fared the best.
The Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP 2,804, -12.83, -0.46%) declined 12.83 points, or 0.46%, at 2,804.35. Decliners led advancers 18 to 11 on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume topped 929 million. The market’s steady rise can in part be chalked up to the Federal Reserve’s quantitative-easing program of buying Treasury debt to help foster the recovery, according to Freeman. “Sixty billion of Treasurys being bought a month does have an impact on the stock market,” he said. With all that liquidity “coming into the economy, some of it is showing up in stocks, some of it is showing up in commodities and it takes a little longer to turn up in loans and jobs.” “It seems like any kind of weakness is being bought, with investors sidelined with money coming in, so the downside is limited,” said Phillip Streible, senior market strategist at Lind-Waldock, of the recent trend that has stock declines quickly luring buyers into the market. “The only shot they have of taking down the market is between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. [Central time], when there is less coming in and actively buying. That is just the way people stack their orders,” he added. Regarding Tuesday’s flood of economic reports, Streible said the data were “kind of flat to slightly weaker.”
The Commerce Department reported a 0.3% rise in retail sales for last month, the weakest increase since last summer. The government also revised December’s sales data to a 0.5% gain from the previously estimated 0.6% increase. U.S. import prices rose 1.5% in January, as costs climbed for energy, food and industrial supplies. The Commerce Department also reported a 0.8% bump in U.S. business inventories for December. Also, the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo housing-market index, released Tuesday, showed confidence among builders remaining at relative lows. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Empire State Manufacturing Survey showed continued expansion in February.
The U.S. reports followed data from China, which showed consumer prices gaining 4.9% in January from a year ago. Deutsche Boerse AG (DBOEY 8.09, -0.17, -2.06%) and NYSE Euronext Inc. (NYX 38.12, -1.33, -3.37%) said Tuesday that they would merge, creating a cross-border exchange giant.

The following are excerpts from Tuesday morning's Blog.
A read of the print editions of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga) (carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Monday's stock prices and related data.
Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 12,268.19 down 5.07 points or 0.04% from Friday's close of 12,273.26. For the year the Dow is up 6.19%. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 12 gained, Johnson & Johnson was unchanged and 17 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was ExxonMobil XOM $84.91 +2.09 2.52% 32,856,175 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Walmart WMT $54.8 -0.89 1.6% 16,127,159 NYSE.
WSJ pC5 "brent's rise rallies Chevron, Exxon" by Kristina Peterson says on an otherwise quiet day in the stock market, energy stocks strengthened as Brent crude oil futures touched a 2 and 1/2 year high. Exxon rose $2.09 while Chevron gains 1.22 after ICE Brent crude for April delivery rose $2.14 a barrel or $103.08, its highest since 9/26/08. Walmart fell 89 cents after JPMorgan cut its rating. Verizon also was weak falling 49 cents.
Fin Times p24 "Energy sector gains from GE deal to buy UK well support biz" by Michael Stothard says GE's announcement that it was making an energy acquisition worth $2.8 bil by buying John Wood Group, the UK oil services firm, lifted oil services stocks and helped the wider markets rise to new 30 month high.
NYT pB9 "Shares gain after decline in China's trade surplus" by Bloombergy says stocks were mostly higher on Mon, sending the S&P 500 to an almost 32 month high, helped by optimism about Egypt's democratic transition plan & a decline in China's trade surplus. Walmart was cut to neutral from overweight at JPMorgan, which cited a lack of positive catalysts to move the stock higher and loss of market share in a number of consumer goods categories at the retailer, which reports earnings next week.
USA Today p4B "Walmart outlook drags Dow down" by David Randall, AP says Walmart pulled down the Dow after JPMorgan lowered its outlook for the firm.
Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,620.99 down 1.67 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,621.66.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.03 down $0.03 from Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $54.06. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $47.43 (HPQ/JPM) down 0.27 from Friday's median closing price of $47.70. The lowest volume was United Technologies UTX $85.21 +0.01 0.01% 2,767,822 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $14.89 +0.12 0.81% 110,827,187 NYSE.

MarketWatch Monday 2/14/11 4:26 by Kristina Peterson says on an otherwise quiet day in the U.S. stock market, energy stocks strengthened as Brent crude-oil futures touched a two-year high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 5.07 points, or 0.04%, at 12268.19. Weighing on the measure, Wal-Mart Stores fell 1.6% after J.P. Morgan Chase cut the retailer's stock-investment rating to neutral from overweight, predicting that same-store sales deterioration could last for years, not quarters. Verizon Communications was also weak, down 1.3%. Keeping the Dow's losses in check, energy companies strengthened as concerns over whether political turmoil could spread in the Middle East sent Brent oil futures to a two-year high. Exxon Mobil rose 2.5%, while Chevron gained 1.3%. General Electric rose 0.8% after agreeing to buy the well-support division of U.K. firm John Wood Group for $2.8 billion in cash to bolster its oil and gas services business in areas like extracting natural gas from shale. The Nasdaq Composite added 7.74, or 0.28%, to 2817.18, its highest close since Nov. 6, 2007. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index gained 3.17, or 0.24% to 1332.32, closing at its highest level since June 19, 2008. The S&P 500's gains were led by its energy and materials sectors. A bigger-than-expected surge of imports and exports in China last month lifted hopes that demand could rise for materials stocks. Mining company Cliffs Natural Resources rose 5.9%, while aluminum giant Alcoa gained 1.3%. In the aftermath of the regime change in Egypt and with no major economic data on the calendar Monday, strategists said there was little pushing the market in either direction. "Nothing is motivating investors to make radical shifts in their portfolios," said John Chisholm, chief investment officer at Acadian Asset Management.
Meanwhile, the euro dropped to a three-week low against the dollar as concerns over the health of German bank WestLB brought the fragility of the region's financial sector again to the forefront. Euro-zone leaders on Monday also failed to nail down any specifics about increasing the size or scope of Europe's bailout fund for debt-stressed states, helping to send the euro to $1.3482, down from $1.3547 late Friday in New York. Investors worried about the region's ability to regain its footing. "Problems which originate from debt take a long time to solve, as we are learning in our economy," said Lawrence Creatura, portfolio manager at Federated Investors. "Europe will be wrestling with similar headwinds for some time to come, as will we." Still, the Stoxx 600 Europe index closed up 0.4%. In Asia, the Nikkei Stock Average and Shanghai Composite reached new 2011 closing highs, boosted by the Chinese trade data. Among stocks in focus, Netflix rose 7.1% after the company became the only paid video service to be a top-10 video service on the Web by total number of streams and unique visitors, according to Nielsen. MGM Resorts International fell 3% after its fourth-quarter loss narrowed significantly from a year earlier, but the company's casino revenue declined and revenue per available room fell on the Las Vegas Strip. Motorola Mobility Holdings slid 5.5% after agreeing to buy a small company developing software to boost the security of mobile devices powered by the Android operating system and spur wider use by businesses, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing a person familiar with the matter. U.S.-listed shares of Nokia dropped 5.6%, extending its decline on Friday's announcement of a partnership with Microsoft. J.P. Morgan Cazenove downgraded Nokia to underweight from overweight, saying that "the degree to which the [Microsoft] deal is beneficial to Nokia is still unclear." On Monday, Nokia Chief Executive Stephen Elop said the company hopes to launch its first smartphone based on Microsoft's Windows Phone platform this year. Seahawk Drilling tumbled 41% after the company said late Friday it would file for bankruptcy protection and sell its assets to Hercules Offshore, whose shares rose 18%. Demand for U.S. Treasurys was mixed, with the two-year note slightly down and the 10-year note up, sending its yield down to 3.62%. Gold futures settled slightly higher.
