Post No. 894 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 component's SEC filings as of February 14, 2011.

A read of the print editions of Monday's 2/28 Barron's, Sunday's & Saturday's New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution and the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of Wall St. Journal & Financial Times, yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,130.45 up 61.95 points or 0.51% from Thursday's close of 12,069. For the week the Dow is down 261.80 points or 2.1% from last Friday's close of 12,392.25. For the year the Dow is up 4.78%. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 20 gained and 10 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Boeing BA $72.3 +1.54 2.18% 8,105,210 NYSE and percentage wise was Intel INTC $21.86 +0.575 2.7% 53,316,783 NASDAQ-GS. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was McDonald's MCD $74.44 -0.77 1.02% 6,488,267 NYSE.

WSJ pB5 "Intel and Boeing boost stocks" by Kristina Peterson, Brendan Conway says US stocks rose, snapping a 3 day string of losses, but some benchmark indexes still posted their biggest weekly drops of the year. Fri's modest climb, boosted by surges in Intel & Boeing, shaved off only a portion of the week's losses afer anxiety over the unrest in the Mid East and N. Africa sent oil prices to their highest levels in more than 2 years.

Fin Times p14 "Boeing soars after landing $35 bil US tanker contract" by Michael Stothard says Boeing had strong gains after winning a lucrative gov contract while equities bounced back in the wider markets after 3 days of sharp losses. Boeing triumphed over arch-rival EADS to win a $35 bil contract to build 179 new airborne refuelling tankers for the US air force, sending its shares up2%.

Sat NYT pB7 "Shares climb as oil prices & supply concerns ease" by AP says stocks rose Fri as oil prices stabilized after climbing through the week. The escalating turmoil in Libya still left major indexes down about 2% for the week. Boeing rose 2.2% after the Air Force awarded it a $35 bil contract.

As of the close of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B4 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.74 up from Friday's 14.66 (year ago it was 16.10); the P/E estimate is 12.87 unchanged from Friday's 12.87 (year ago it was 13.21), and the dividend yield is 2.40 up from Friday's 2.40 (last year it was 2.63). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,602.79 up 8.25 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,594.54. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.43 up $0.28 from Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $53.15. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.11 (JPM/AXP) down 1.63 from Thursday's median closing price of $47.74. The lowest volume was United Technologies UTX $83.37 +0.65 0.79% 2,522,263 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $14.2 +0.23 1.65% 124,628,227 NYSE.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $825 ($160,279 - $159,454).

MarketWatch Friday 2/25/11 5:13 by Kristina Peterson & Brendan Conway says U.S. stocks rose Friday, snapping three straight days of losses, but benchmark indexes still posted their biggest weekly drops of the year. Friday’s modest climb, boosted by surges in Intel Corp. (INTC 21.84, -0.02, -0.09%) and Boeing Co. (BA 72.25, -0.05, -0.07%) shares, shaved off only a portion of the week’s losses after anxiety over the unrest in the Middle East and North Africa sent oil prices to their highest levels in more than two years. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 12,130, +61.95, +0.51%) closed out with its biggest weekly point drop since the week that ended Aug. 13, 2010. On Friday the measure finished up 61.95 points, or 0.5%, at 12,130.45. Boosting the index, Boeing shares climbed 2.2% after the Air Force awarded a tanker deal valued at more than $30 billion to the company late Thursday. Intel was also strong, with shares rising 2.7%, after Citigroup analysts said sales of personal computers could pick up in March, with Intel, Advanced Micro Devices and Marvell as three of the biggest beneficiaries. Shares of AMD (AMD 9.26, -0.03, -0.32%) gained 2.1%, while Marvell Technology Group Ltd. (MRVL 18.82, -0.10, -0.50%) rose 5%. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,781, +43.15, +1.58%) climbed 43.15, or 1.6% to 2,781.05. The Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index (SPX 1,320, +13.78, +1.06%) gained 13.78, or 1.1% to 1319.88. However, the week’s losses added up to the S&P 500’s worst week since Nov. 12, 2010. After shooting above $100, crude-oil futures stabilized as worries faded about supply shortages related to the unrest in Libya. Saudi Arabia and a group of major oil-consuming nations said Thursday there is plenty of oil on hand to replace supplies halted from Libya. Nymex crude oil for April delivery (CLJ11 98.26, +0.98, +1.01%) settled below $98 a barrel on Friday, up 60 cents.“The sentiment seems to be that there’s not going to be a prolonged, drawn-out problem in Libya,” said Michael Yoshikami, chief investment strategist at YCMNET Advisors. Reassurances that other countries will help make up any oil shortfall calmed the market Friday, he said. Despite the session’s modest gains, the market won’t “continue to march upwards until the issue with Libya is resolved,” he said. Stocks also got a mild lift from the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan consumer-sentiment index, which rose to its highest level in three years. Read more on consumer sentiment. Among stocks in focus, American International Group (AIG 38.50, -0.04, -0.10%) fell 4.7% after the insurer posted net income of $11.2 billion in the fourth quarter but the company’s core insurance businesses turned in a weaker performance during the period. AIG also sounded a cautiously optimistic tone as it held its first conference call with Wall Street analysts in two years. J.C. Penney (JCP 34.16, -2.39, -6.54%) shares tumbled 6.5% after its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings rose 36% and the department-store operator projected 2011 earnings above street views, but its first-quarter earnings view was well below expectations. Shares of Salesforce.com (CRM 138.95, +0.12, +0.09%) , which makes software that helps manage customer information about sales and marketing and other topics, climbed 3.4% after its fiscal fourth-quarter profit fell 46% on surging costs and stock-based expenses, but the company’s strong revenue growth continued. NutriSystem Inc. (NTRI 13.98, +0.09, +0.65%) shares plunged 31% after its fourth-quarter earnings more than doubled after a year-earlier quarter that included a hefty impairment charge, but revenue continued to decline for the weight-management company. Nutrisystem also issued a weak outlook for the new year. CBS (CBS 23.46, -0.08, -0.33%) shares jumped 6.9% after top executives said Thursday that programming fees paid to the company’s national broadcast television network from local-affiliate stations owned by other networks could amount to $225 million in several years. U.S.-listed shares of Lloyds Banking Group (UK:LLOY 62.63, -2.93, -4.45%) (LYG 4.04, -0.14, -3.35%) fell 3.1% as the group’s 2010 earnings topped forecasts, but analysts focused on a disappointing margin and integration costs. The U.S. dollar strengthened against the euro but weakened against the yen. The euro (EURUSD 1.3753, +0.0007, +0.0509%) was trading recently at $1.3750, down from $1.3802 late Thursday in New York. Demand for U.S. Treasurys rose, pushing the yield on the 10-year note (UST10Y 3.42, -0.03, -0.96%) down to 3.42%. Gold futures settled lower on Friday, but rose nearly 1.5% over the week. In other U.S. economic data, the latest reading on gross domestic product showed the economy grew at a slower rate at the end of 2010 than previously reported. The Commerce Department said GDP rose at an inflation-adjusted annual rate of 2.8% in the fourth quarter. In its original estimate, the government said GDP rose 3.2%.
