Post No. 885 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 component's SEC filings as of February 14, 2011.

The U.S. Stock Market was closed yesterday for President's Day Holiday.

A read of the print editions of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, NY Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution, & Daily Report (GA) (carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,391.25 up 73/11 points or 0.59% from Thursday's close of 12,318.14. For the week the Dow is up 118.99 points or 0.97% from last Friday's Dow close of 12,273.26. For the year the Dow is up 6.83%. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 21 gained and 9 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar CAT $105.805 +2.445 2.37% 8,389,117 NYSE. The biggest decliners dollar-wise were American Express AXP $45.53 -0.25 0.55% 11,896,139 NYSE and Merck MRK $32.85 -0.25 0.76% 14,819,654 NYSE and percentage-wise was Alcoa AA $17.285 -0.235 1.34% 21,904,283 NYSE.

Fin Times p30 "Stock watchers on high alert for any reduction in mid-caps' lead" by Michael Stothard says mid-sized firms ahve been unstoppable, outperforming their larger cousins nearly every quarter since the lows of the fin'l crisis & blowing to new record highs.

As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 15.18 up from Friday's 14.97 (year ago it was 16.26); the P/E estimate is 12.87 up from Friday's 12.81 (year ago it was 12.85), and the dividend yield is 2.34 down from Friday's 2.37 (last year it was 2.62). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,637.38 up 9.79 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,627.59. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.58 up $0.32 from Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $54.26. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $48.31 (HPQ/JPM) up 0.09 from Thursday's median closing price of $48.22. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $92.96 +0.23 0.25% 3,402,790 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $14.765 -0.045 0.3% 91,842,702 NYSE.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $979 ($163,738 - $162,759)

MarketWatch Friday 2/18/11 4:22 by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks ended higher for a third-straight session and added about 1% for the week, as investors overlooked the risk of an oil shock in the Middle East to focus on better U.S. data and corporate earnings.
