Post No. 1,366 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of December 1, 2011.
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's and Investors' Business Daily, Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.
Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,184.26 up 186.56 or 1.55% from Thursday's close of 11,997.7. For the week the Dow is up 164.84 points or 1.37% from last Friday's close of 12,019.42. For the year the Dow is up 5.24%. Of the 30 Dow components 29 gained and declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar CAT $96.12 +3.20 3.44% 6,622,384 NYSE. The only and biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was DuPont DD $45.14 -1.38 2.97% 20,879,171 NYSE.
Investor's Business Daily pA1 "Stocks climb sharply but volume declines" by Paul Whitfield says stocks posted big gains Fri, but slow trade suggested institutional investors were absent. Friday's action was up in lower volume. The current outlook is the market is in a correction.
As of the open of the market Monday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.18 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.98 (year ago it was 14.55); Monday's P/E estimate is 12.33 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.35 (year ago it was 13.33), and Monday's dividend yield is 2.59 down from Friday's dividend yield of 2.59 (last year it was 2.52). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,609.89 up 24.65 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,585.24. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.66 up 0.82 from Thursday's average closing price of $52.84. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $42.69 (DD/HD) down $0.53 from Thursday's median closing price of $43.22. The lowest volume was United Technologies UTX $76.31 +1.94 2.61% 3,927,791 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $5.745 +0.155 2.77% 273,426,074 NYSE.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $2,465 ($160,989 - $158,524).
MarketWatch Friday 12/9/11 4:10 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks climbed on Friday, with the three benchmark indexes up for the week, as European leaders agreed to closer fiscal ties and U.S. consumer confidence hit a six-month high. “It’s an important step towards being able to right their fiscal house, and for the euro to remain the single currency,” Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott, said of the accord reached at the European Union summit. “But it doesn’t cure the immediate issue of low or in some countries negative growth,” he added of the euro region. Readying for a second consecutive week of gains, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 193.56 points, or 1.6%, to 12,191.26, with Bank of America Corp. BAC +0.35% and J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. JPM +2.98% pacing the gains that extended to all but one of its 30 components. DuPont Co. DD +0.09% dropped 3% after the chemical maker and Dow component lowered its outlook for the current fiscal year. The S&P 500 Index SPX +1.69% added 21.83 points, or 1.8%, to 1,256.18 with financial companies pacing the gains among its 10 major industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.94% advanced 53.01 points, or 2%, to 2,649.39. For every stock falling nearly six gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 541 million shares traded as of 3:30 p.m. Eastern. Equities and U.S. Treasury yields gained after 26 European nations said they’ll think about linking their economies more closely. And the 17 nations that use the euro said they would sign an accord that would give a central authority better oversight of their budgets. Nine other European Union countries agreed to consider signing the treaty, while Britain said it would not, as it does not want to be subjected to the proposed financial rules. “Europe is inching closer to what it will eventually have to do. It shows a determination that when push comes to shove, they will take whatever actions are necessary to calm the markets, but I’m not very impressed,” said David Kelly, chief market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds. “There was a lot of bad news already priced into the market,” Kelly added of Wall Street’s rise in the wake of an agreements he and others found lacking in specifics. The costs of borrowing for European governments edged lower, with Italy’s 10-year yield lately at a still-dangerously high 6.3%, with a yield of 7% or above viewed as the tipping point, which if it were to remain for an extended period would push the nation into default. “This will only be probably solved when investors are able to buy Italian bonds at reasonable interest rates,” said Kelly. “It’s not the big bazooka that the market wanted but it was good enough to take it off the front burner and run over lots of shorts. With bond auctions in Spain and Italy in the next two weeks, our market will have to pay attention,” emailed Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel Nicolaus, in afternoon commentary. The major indexes also drew a lift after the University of Michigan/Thomson Reuters index of consumer sentiment reached 67.7 in the initial reading for December, its highest level since June. “At the moment I would give the majority of the market’s movement on any given day to Europe. But, the stronger our domestic picture looks the more enthused market participants can be about U.S. equities,” said Luschini at Janney Montgomery Scott. Another report Friday had the Commerce Department releasing figures that showed purchases from overseas declined to the lowest level since April, as demand for petroleum dropped sharply.
