Post No. 1,368 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of December 1, 2011.
A read of the print editions of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Monday's stock prices and related data.
Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 12,021.39 down 162.87 or 1.34% from Friday's close of 12,184.26. For the year the Dow is up 3.83%. Of the 30 Dow components only Disney and McDonald's gained and 28 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was McDonald's MCD $98.48 +0.45 0.46% 5,707,378 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Caterpillar CAT $93.24 -2.73 2.84% 6,268,704 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $5.45 -0.27 4.72% 186,459,098 NYSE.
WSJ pC4 "Bullishness fades; Dow does, too" by Brendan Conway says sharp criticisms of last week's European sovereign debt summit by credit rating firms sent US stocks stumbling, underscoring investor worries that Europe's crisis will last well into next year and could still trigger a global recession. Fin'l stocks had the biggest declines as Bank of America lost 27 cents. A profit warning at Intel was another factor weighing on major indexes. Diamond Foods is charted under Bad News as it will miss a filing deadline which throws a wrench into plans to buy Pringles from Procter & Gamble.
Fin Times p24 "Semiconductors in sharp sell off after Intel lowers revenue outlook" by Ajay Makan says semiconductor manufacturers sold off sharply after Intel lowered 4Q rev guidance by $1bil to $13.7 bil. Diamond Foods' prospective takeover of Pringles from Procter & Gamble appeared to be on ice again as diamond failed to publish its quarterly earnings report on schedule as its auditor investigates allegations of inappropriate payments to walnut growers.
NYT pB1 "Rating agency warnings bring down the markets" by Liz Alderman says the market euphoria over last week's deal by European leaders to shore up the euo union succumbed to a darker mood Mon. Shares of Intel lost 4%.
USA Today p4B "Stocks retreat after investors question results of EU summit" by Bloomberg says stocks fell Mon after a 2 week rally as investors feared last week's summit did little to ease pressure on Europe's struggling governments and Intel cuts its rev forecast.
As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.00 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.18 (year ago it was 14.57); today's P/E estimate is 12.33 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 12.33 (year ago it was 13.34), and today's dividend yield is 2.63 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.59 (last year it was 2.52). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,588.38 down 21.51 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,609.89. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.95 down 0.71 from Friday's average closing price of $53.66. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $41.98 (DD/HD) down $0.71 from Friday's median closing price of $42.69. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $55.83 -0.19 0.34% 4,339,776 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $5.45 -0.27 4.72% 186,459,098 NYSE.
If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,151 ($160,989 - $158,838).
MarketWatch Monday 12/12/11 4:10 pm by Laura Mandaro says US stocks closed broadly lower Monday as ratings agencies and investors cast doubts on the effectiveness of a European Union agreement that was met with some fanfare by markets Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -1.34% fell 162.87 points, or 1.3%, to 12,021.39. More than 4% drops in Bank of America Corp. BAC -4.72% and Intel Corp. INTC +0.13% shares led declines for all but two of the index's 30 components. Intel tumbled after the chipmaker issued a sales warning. The S&P 500 SPX -1.49% dropped 18.72 points, or 1.5%, to 1,236.47, led by pullbacks in financials and natural-resource sectors. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -1.31% lost 34.59 points, or 1.3%, to 2,612.26.
