Post No. 1,390 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of December 1, 2011.

A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's, Tuesday's (12/27/11) Investor's Business Daily, the combined Sat. and Sunday issues of each of the The Wall St. Journal and Financial Times, and Monday's, Sunday's and Saturday's New York Times and Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,1294 up 124.35 or 1.02% from Thursday's close of 12,169.65. For the year the Dow is up 6.19%. For the week the Dow is up 427.61 or 3.7% from last Friday's close of 11,866.39. Of the 30 Dow components 28 gained and 2 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM $184.75 +2.71 1.49% 3,049,365 NYSE nd percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $5.6 +0.13 2.38% 189,715,929 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Alcoa AA $8.86 -0.045 0.51% 18,545,012 NYSE and percentage-wise was Boeing BA $73.97 -0.32 0.43% 3,575,493 NYSE.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stocks ride low volume to positive finish" by Paul Whitfield says stocks posted moderate gains Fri's pre-Christmas trade faded to a whisper. Volume was down sharply on both major exchanges. The current outlook is the market is in a confirmed uptrend. Quiet volume in the week running up to Christmas and then the week before New Year's Day is typical. With earnings season beginning in the second week of Jan institutions might have reason to remain on the sidelines for a few more weeks.

Inv. Bus. Daily pB2 "Market in confirmed uptrend" says the market launched into a fresh uptrend last Tues with a boost from Nov.housing starts. Major indexes posted strong ains for the week, closing at the top of their ranges.

WSJ pA1 "Stocks hit 5 month high in year end rebound" by Jonathan Cheng says the Dow sailed into the holiday weekend at a 5 month high riding the continuing US recover and a break in the latest congressional deadlock. The Dow is back to where it was in late July just as the European debt crisis and the congressional deficit reduction battle were coming to a head.

Fin Times p11 "NYSE Euronext falls behind as S&P solidifies gains" by Ajay Makan says shares in NYSE Euronext fell 2.2% the day afer US regulators gave a green light to its merger with German rival Deutsche Borse. Elsewhere, US stocks edged up in light trading in spite of data revealing a smaller than expected rise in consumer spending in Nov. Just 2 sotcks, IBM and McDonald's, accounted for half of the Dow's gains this year because the DJIA is weighted by stock price rather than market value.

Sat NYT pB6 "Market close for holidays in slow but hopeful climb" by AP says stocks closed higher Fri after a quiet, preholiday session that turned the S&P positive for the year.

As of the close of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B10 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Saturday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.30 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.16 (year ago it was 14.76); Saturday's P/E estimate is 12.37 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.20 (year ago it was 13.54), and Saturday's dividend yield is 2.59 down from Friday's dividend yield of 2.61 (last year it was 2.48). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,624.40 up 16.438.18 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,607.97. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.15 up $0.55 from Thursday's average closing price of $53.60. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44/13 (DD/HD) up $0.38 from Thursday's median closing price of $43.75. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $59.35 +0.16 0.27% 1,848,064 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $5.6 +0.13 2.38% 189,715,929 NYSE.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,643 ($162,440 - $160,797).

MarketWatch Thursday 12/23/11 4:30 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks on Friday rallied to their third weekly gain in four after Congress approved a tax-cut extension and orders for durable goods in November climbed the most in four months. “An early Christmas has descended on the economy in the form of better numbers and a two-month extension of the payroll-tax cut,” Kevin Giddis, fixed-income strategist at Morgan Keegan, wrote in emailed commentary. Up 3.6% on the week and 6.2% for 2011 so far, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +1.02% added 124.35 points, or 1%, to 12,294, with 28 of its 30 components rising. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.90% added 11.33 points, or 0.9%, to 1,265.33 with consumer discretionary leading gains that included all of its 10 major sectors. The index finished 3.7% ahead of last Friday’s close and 0.6% higher than it stood at the end of 2010. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.74% advanced 19.19 points, or 0.7%, to 2,618.64, leaving it up 2.5% for the week but off 1.3% for 2011. For every stock that lost ground more than two gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where not quite 478 million shares traded. Composite volume topped 2.2 billion. “Keep in mind that trading volume is light and directional moves, as a result, might be a bit exaggerated, but investors appear to be voting with sell tickets for Treasurys and buy tickets for riskier assets like stocks, anticipating that in 2012, the economy will do better, even if it is by just a little,” noted Giddis. Treasury prices fell, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note 10_YEAR +4.10% used in determining mortgage rates and other consumer loans rising to 2.027%. On the New York Mercantile Exchange, crude-oil futures CL2G +0.31% rose 15 cents to finish at $99.68 a barrel and gold futures GC2G -0.14% fell $4.60 to end at $1,606.00 an ounce. The contracts finished early Friday and stay shut on Monday due to the Christmas holiday. In Washington, Congress approved a two-month payroll tax cut extension a day after Republicans in the House gave way to President Barack Obama and Senate Republicans on the issue. The Commerce Department on Friday said orders for long-lasting goods climbed 3.8% in November, while consumer spending climbed 0.1% last month. A third report had new-home sales for November rising 1.6% to a seven-month high.
