 The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 13,333.35 up 9.99 or 0.07% from Tuesday's close of 13,323.36. Of the 30 Dow components 16 gained and 14 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise   s and percentage-wise was  Verizon up 66 cents or 1.49%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was   and percentage-wise was DuPont down 86 cents or 1.68 %.


As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.12914682. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.76 up from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.69 (year ago it was 12.39); today's P/E estimate is 12.55 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 12.55 (year ago it was 11.50) and today's dividend yield is 2.57 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.58 (last year it was 2.77). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,721.95 up 1.29  from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,720.66. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.12914682) you get the increase in today's Dow .Each dollar increase or decrease in the Dow increases or decreases the Dow Jones Industrial Average by 7.74.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.40 up 4 cents from Tuesday's average closing price of $57.36. The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.32 (HD/DIS) up 14 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $54.18 (HD/DIS). The lowest volume was 3M  and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If  Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $129 ($172,195 - $172,066).

finished modestly higher Wednesday, gaining for a second straight session, finding some support after a German court declined to block a euro-area rescue fund. Investors, however, remained wary ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy announcement due Thursday. The Dow industrials DJIA +0.07% closed up 9.99 points, or 0.08%, at 13,333.35. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.32% rose 9.78 points, or 0.3%, to 3,114.31, and the S&P 500 SPX +0.21% ended 3 points, or 0.2%, higher at 1,436.56. "It's all about the Fed meeting tomorrow," said Keith Springer, president of Springer Financial Advisors. "General consensus is that they will do something. Most likely they will just extend the zero interest rate pledge another year through 2015, and promise to stand at the ready to do more if necessary."

Dow Jones Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 13,323.36 up 69.07 or 0.52% from Monday's close of 13,254.29%. For the year the Dow is up 9.05%. Of the 30 Dow components 24 gained and 6 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up $2.34 and percentage-wise was Bank of America up 5.42 %. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Home Depot down 55 cents and percentage-wise was Kraft down 1.09%.

WSJ pC4 "Blue chips & energy firms lead rebound" by Matt Jarzemskys ays stocks rose as anticipation of a German court ruling & Fed Res meeting this week brought out buyers.  Hewlett Packard is charted under Good news as it gained 52 cents after saying on Mon it will lay off 2,000 more employees.

IBD pB4 "Indexes creep higher as trade rises; NYSE leads" by Victor Reklaitis says stocks scored mostly mild gains Tues as investors waited for big news in the next couple of sessions.  The current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

USA Today p4B "Stock markets rally ahead of a 2 day meeting of the Fed" by Bloomberg says stocks posted modest gains Tues amid speculation that the Fed will act to stimulate the economy.

NYT pB8 "Dow index at highest close since '07" by Reutes says the Dow reached its highest level in moe than 4 and a half years on Tues in light trading as investors continued to wait for decisions from the Fed & a German court on the legality of the euro zone's new bailout fund.



Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,720.66 up 9.92 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,711.74. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Saefong says US stocks closed higher Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average marking its highest finish since late 2007, as traders awaited this week's key decisions from Germany's top court and the U.S. Federal Reserve. The Dow industrials DJIA+0.52% closed up 69.07 points, or 0.5%, at 13,323.36. The Nasdaq Composite COMP+0.02% rose 0.5 point to 3,104.53, and the S&P 500 SPX+0.31% ended 4.48 points, or 0.3%, higher at 1,433.56.
