http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 1,804 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's and Investor's Business Daily, the combined Sat/Sun issue of each of the Wall St. Journal & Financial Times, Sat's New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 13,306.64  up 14.64 or 11% from Thursday's close of 13,292.  For the week the Dow is up 215.8 or 1.65% from last Friday's close of  13,090.84.   For the year the Dow is up 8.91%.  Of the 30 Dow components  16 gained and 14 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Caterpillar up $3.31 and percentage-wise was Bank of America 5.39%.  The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Pfizer down $2.33 or 5.49%.

WSJ pB4 "Stocks work out gains after  payrolls flop" by Matt Jarzemsky says stocks edged up adding to multiyear highs, as disappointing Aug jobs growth stoked speculation the Fed will unveil further measures to juice the US economy.  Kraft fell $2.32 aftter giving outlooks for the 2 firms into which it plans to split.

NYT pB6 "Sahres hang onto thursday's highs as focus veers to Fed" by Reuters says stocks in the US held steady at 4 year highs on Fri closing otu their best week since June as a disappointing jobs report fueled expectations that the Fed would act to stimulate the economynext week.  Kraft gave earnings forecasts for the 2 firms it will split into next month that disappointed analysts.  Intel cuts its 3Q rev estimate & withdrew its full year foecast.

Fin Times p11 "Amazon soars as it puts heat on Apple over tablets" by Arash Massoudi says  US stocks climbed to multiyear highs as investors were encouraged by the European Central Bank's decision to extend its bond buying operations to defend single currency.  Bank of America increased 9.1% and JPMorgan rose 6% as reports said the bank faces a new probe from the US Senate into trading losses suffered earlier this year.

Inv. Bus. Daily pB6 "Stocks keep to tight range in wake of heft gains" by Paul Whitfield says stocks turned in a next to nothing performance Fri on the Nasdaq barely budging from a tight trading range.  The other indexes showed better gains, mostly due to commodity related strength.  The current outlook is a confirmed uptrend as Friday's aciton was mixed in lower vol.

As of the close of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B5 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.12914682. Saturday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.74 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.73 (year ago it was 12.26); Sat's P/E estimate is 12.55 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.42 (year ago it was 11.50) and Saturday's dividend yield is 2.57 unchanged from Friday's dividend yield of 2.57 (last year it was 2.79). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,718.50 up 17.89 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,716.61. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.12914682) you get the increase in today's Dow .Each dollar increase in the Dow increases the Dow Jones Industrial Average by 7.74.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.28 up 6 cents from Thursday's average closing price of $57.22. The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.50 (HD/DIS) down 26 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $54.76 (HD/DIS). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,789 ($171,850 - $171,661).

Market Watch 9/7/12 Fri. 4:19 pm by Myra P. Saefond says US stocks finished higher Friday, with the benchmark indexes posting gains for the week and closing at their highest levels in years after August jobs data raised the prospects for another round of monetary stimulus by the Federal Reserve. The Dow industrials DJIA +0.11% closed up 14.64 points, or 0.1%, at 13,306.64, its highest since Dec. 2007. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.02% edged up by 0.6 point to 3,136.42, its highest since Nov. 2000, and the S&P 500 SPX +0.40% ended 5.8 points, or 0.4%, higher at 1,437.92, its highest since Jan. 2008. "While it looks like stocks didn't move all that much, underneath the averages there is a lot of bullish price action under way," said Michael Gayed, chief investment strategist at Pension Partners LLC. "High beta small-cap stocks continue to meaningfully outperform, the [CBOE Market Volatility Index] continues to price poorly, and defensive sectors, which money flees to in times of fear, are collapsing," he said. "Fear over a 2008 repeat is now turning into fear of global monetary shock and awe, and the potential inflationary aspects of it."
