Dow Jones Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 13,326.39 down 18.58 or 014 % from Wednesday's close of 13,344.97. For the year the Dow is up 9.08%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Disney down 83 cents and percentage-wise was AT&T down 1.72%.

IBD pB2 "Stocks up on flawed data, then return most of gains" by Paul Whitfield says stocks staged negative reversals as the major indexes gave back most of their early gains. The action saw reverses off highs in mixed vol. Current outlook is the market is in a correction.
Fin times p24 "Sprint Nextel rallies on talks to sell majority stake to SoftBank" by Anora Mahmudova says shares in AT&T and Verizon slipped 1.8% and 1.3% respectively. US equities which initially got a boost from positive jobs data showing an unexpected fall in unemployment claims failed to hang on to early gains and finished roughly where they started.
NYT pB5 "Markets end flat after an early rally fades" by AP says stocks were flat Thurs unimpressed by encouraging jobs news but unrattled by worrisome developments in the global economy.
As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.51 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.53 (year ago it was 12.80); today's P/E estimate is 12.79 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 12.79 (year ago it was 11.25) and today's dividend yield is 2.55 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.54 (last year it was 2.70). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,735.31 down 2.42 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,737.73. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.84 down 8 cents from Wednesday's closing numerator of $57.92. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.02 (DIS/UNH) down 14 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $54.16 (DIS/UNH). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $242 ($173,773 - $173,531).
MarketWatch.com Thur. 10/11/12 4:06 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks indexes closed largely unchanged on Thursday as cheer about a decline in jobless claims dissipated. "I don't get too worked up over the weekly data, the trend is much more important, and I think we are seeing incremental improvement," said Tim Leach, chief investment officer at U.S. Bank Wealth Management. Uncertainty ahead of the U.S. presidential election less than a month away is a likely contributor to Wall Street's stall. Once "the results are in, then everybody can make plans accordingly. That clarity of at least that portion of the road ahead will be reacted to positively," regardless who wins, Leach said. Down for a fourth day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA-0.14% fell 18.51 points, or 0.1%, to 13,326.46. The S&P 500 index SPX+0.02% gained a fraction to end at 1,432.86. The Nasdaq Composite COMP-0.08% fell 2.40 points, or 0.1%, to 3,049.38.
