MarketWatch.com Wed. 10/3/12 5:19   pm by Carla Mozee & Kate Gibson says US blue chip stocks

stocks closed higher Wednesday, with modest gains following upbeat data on U.S. private-sector job growth and activity in the services sector. But blue-chips struggled during the session as Hewlett-Packard Co.’sq HPQ -12.96% stock plunged to multi-year lows after the company’s disappointing forecast underscored concerns about corporate profitability ahead of the start of earnings season.
“There’s an overall concern that this earnings season is going to be weak,” said Michael Yoshikami, chief executive and founder of Destination Wealth Management in Walnut Creek, Calif. For years, commodities investors had it easy-just buy anything that China was buying. Now, with China's growth slowing and demand for raw materials easing, investors are being forced to work a bit harder.
“You’ve already seen announcements from FedEx Corp. FDX +1.33% , which tends to be a bellwether for economic growth. H-P adds to that concern,” said Yoshikami, noting that H-P’s soft guidance is also a “dramatic example because they have some specific business issues they are dealing with.” The Dow Jones Industrial Average  DJIA +0.09% rose 12.25 points, or 0.1%, to 13,494.61, with shares of Home Depot Inc. HD +2.39% topping advancers. The Dow had been up by as many as 54 points after a better-than-expected readings on the labor market and the services sector from Automatic Data Processing and the Institute for Supply Management, respectively.
Blue-chips had lost as many as 43 points intraday, with decliners paced by shares of H-P, which slid 13% and closed at a nearly 10-year low. H-P issued a weak adjusted-earnings forecast for fiscal year 2013 and said the year will be a “fix and rebuild” one for the company. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.49% pared its gain to 15.19 points, or 0.5%, to 3,135.23, but marked a second consecutive win. The S&P 500 SPX +0.36% also finished off session highs but it logged a third straight day of gains. The index rose 5.24 points, or 0.4%, to 1,450.99 with telecommunications services, consumer discretionary and financials faring best and energy and materials the laggards among its 10 industry groups. Crude prices tumbled on worries about the global economy as China’s services industries in September expanded at a lackluster pace, while euro-area services and manufacturing shrank for an eighth month. Crude for November delivery  CLX2 +0.06% settled at a two-month low, falling 4.1% to $88.14 a barrel. Yoshikami said he’s been sticking with stocks as he sees the market reasonably valued. “I think the alternative, which is fixed income, pay essentially nothing. Most importantly, the Federal Reserve has a stated policy of trying to inflate the stock market to increase the wealth effect. This is a classic case of not fighting the Federal Reserve’s intentions.” Two days before the Labor Department releases September payrolls data, ADP reported that private payrolls rose by 162,000 in September, more than the 152,000 Dow Jones Newswires-compiled consensus, and lower than the prior month’s revised gain of 189,000. “The ADP report looked pretty good — that should give some positive hope to the overall market, which is experiencing a migration of concern from areas such as Greece and the fiscal cliff over to the third-quarter earnings season,” said Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist at Banyan Partners in New York. Meanwhile, Monsanto Co.MON -2.18% shares fell 2.2% after the agricultural supply company projected 2013 earnings below expectations. Shares of Best Buy Co. BBY +4.66% rallied 4.7% on a Reuters report that its founder and buyout companies were reviewing the electronic retailer’s books. Decliners ran slightly ahead of advancers on the New York Stock Exchange, where 666 million shares traded as of 4:00 p.m. Eastern. Composite volume reached 3.5 billion. And, the ISM’s September reading on the services sector also topped expectations, coming in at 55.1% versus 53.7% in August, with the latest level the best since March.
“The non-manufacturing index continues to show relative strength in the service sector which accounts for roughly 83% of all private-sector jobs in the economy. This is unquestionably positive,” noted Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG LLC. “The U.S. economy is hanging in there, especially compared to its other developed-world brethren in Europe,” emailed Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak

MarketWatch.com Tues. 10/2/12 3:08 pm by Myra P. Saefong says
Blue-chip stocks fell Tuesday, pressured by concerns ahead of quarterly reports on earnings and outlooks as traders mulled Spain’s prospects for a bailout request and credit-rating downgrade.
The Nasdaq Composite, meanwhile, struggled to put an end to a two-session decline.
In a raid that stands out even in Wall Street's aggressive recruiting culture, Merrill Lynch is arming some managers with lists of top Morgan Stanley Wealth Management brokers who are considered ripe for defection.“We would not be surprised to see a few days like this scattered into the rally as traders get ready” for third-quarter results and for fiscal year 2013 indicators, said Richard Hastings, a macro strategist at Global Hunter Securities. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.24%  shed 72.65 points, or 0.5%, to 13,442.46, with most of its 30 components trading in negative territory. Microsoft Corp. MSFT +0.58% , up 0.2%, was a top gainer in the Dow, while DuPont DD -1.71%  fell 2.1%. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.09%  slipped 4.36 points, or 0.3%, to 1,440.13. Of the benchmark index’s 10 sectors, health care and utilities were the leading gainers, while materials were the largest decliner. “The defensive sectors of the market appear to be outperforming,” said Clark Yingst, chief market analyst from securities and investment banking firm Joseph Gunnar, pointing out that several pharmaceutical stocks, for example, are “extending their recent uptrends and, in some cases, revisiting levels last seen four or five years ago.”“It is interesting to us that defensive sectors of the market have performed relatively well behind the official announcement and launch of QE3,” he said. “The strength could reflect investor skepticism regarding the impact of QE3 on real economic activity. It could also be attributable to concerns regarding pending earnings reports in cyclical economically-sensitive sectors of the market, concerns that, in our view, are warranted.”The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.21%  fell 9.96 points, or 0.3%, to 3,103.57, after trading as high as 3,131.64 earlier. Research In Motion Ltd. RIMM +5.22%  bucked the overall trend, trading 5.9% higher. On Tuesday, decliners edged ahead of advancers on the New York Stock Exchange, where 355 million shares traded as of 2:45 p.m. Eastern. Composite volume topped 2.3 billion.
Rajoy, however, has said he does not plan to ask for a bailout this weekend, according to a report in Europa Press Tuesday. Reuters also reported that Moody’s Investors Service will announce the results of its review of Spain’s sovereign debt rating this month.Aside from euro-zone news, traders will keep an eye on quarterly financial reports and guidance as the earnings season kicks into full gear starting next week, with earnings from Alcoa Inc. AA -0.67% on Oct. 9.  Investors are beginning “to worry that corporate earnings will not only be down, but be worse than expected,” said Keith Springer, president of Springer Financial Advisors in Sacramento, Calif. On Monday, the Dow gained 0.6% after data showed activity in the U.S. manufacturing sector rose in September to its highest level in four months.  There were little economic data Tuesday. CoreLogic reported a 0.3% gain in home prices in August, taking the year-on-year rise to 4.6%.
In other trading action Tuesday, gold GCZ2 -0.31%  and crude-oil futures CLX2 -0.85%  closed lower. The euro EURUSD +0.2326%  gained ground against the greenback.
