http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 1,863 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of Thursday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average:   The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 13,557 up 5.22 or 0.04 % from Tuesday's close of 13,551.78.  For the year the Dow is up 10.96%. Of the Dow components 23 gained and 7 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was  Caterpillar up $1.60 and percentage-wise was Alcoa up 2.57%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was IBM down $10.50 or 4.98%.

WSJ pC4 "Dow stretches win streak to 4" by Jonathan Cheng says IBM weighed heavily on the Dow as it and Intel both had disappointing earnings reports Tues and IBM is chated under Bad News.   Home Depot benefiting from the housing rebound rose 53 cents.

NYT pB8 "Shares gain on housing, but IBM drags on Dow" by Reutes says the S&P rose for the 3rd straight session after housing starts hit a 4 year high.

Fin Times p24 "BofA pares early gains as profits fall 94% afte $2.4 bil settlement" by Arash Massoudi says the S&P has risen 2.3% so far this week amid mmixed results from firms reporting 3Q profits.  Caterpillar rose 2%.

IBD pB2 "NYSE, S&P rise again while techs show fatigue" by David Saito-Chung says the major indexes had minor gains during a seesaw session Wed as the action saw small gians in mildly higher trade and the current outlook is the market is in a correction.

As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.71 unchanged from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.71 (year ago it was 12.75); today's P/E estimate is 12.62 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 12.62 (year ago it was 11.70) and today's dividend yield is 2.50 unchanged from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.50 (last year it was 2.67). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,765.34 up 0.68 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,764.66. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the increase in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $58.84 up 2 cent from Tuesday's closing numerator of $58.82. The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.12 (DIS/UNH) up 3 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $54.09 (DIS/UNH). The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $68 ($176,534 - $176,466).

MarketWatch.com Wed. 10/17/12 4:11 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks
