12/10/12 Mon. pm Dow Closes at 13,169.88 up 14.75 or 0.11%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 13,169.88 up 14.75 or 0.11% from Friday's close of 13,155.13. Of the Dow components 15  gained and  15 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was  McDonald's up 93 cents and percentage-wise was Cisco up 2.35%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was  Home Depot down $1.41 or 2.19%.

As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.62 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.55 (year ago it was 13.18); Monday's P/E estimate is 12.52 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.35 (year ago it was 12.33) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.71 up from Friday's dividend yield of 2.65 (last year it was 2.59). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,714.93 up 1.92  from Friday's closing numerator of 1,713.01. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the increase in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monay's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.16 up 6 cents from Friday's average of $57.10. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.75   (DIS/UNH) up 19 cents from Friday's median closing price of $51.56. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $192  ($171,493 - ($171,301).

Monday's 12/10/12 MarketWatch 4:11  pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks finished higher on Monday, lifting the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 index to their highest perches since Election Day, as Wall Street held out hope for a deal to avert the fiscal cliff. "Our investors are prepared for higher tax rates for 2013 and beyond," said Ron Florance, managing director at Wells Fargo, of President Barack Obama's proposal to increase taxes on the wealthiest 2%. If adopted, the president proposals are not "catastrophic," said Florance. "It's annoying, but these are not levels that are economically dangerous," he added. Extending gains into a fourth session, the Dow industrials DJIA +0.11% climbed 14.75 points, or 0.1%, to 13,169.88. Also up for a fourth session, the S&P 500 SPX +0.03% added half a point to 1,418.55. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.30% climbed 8.92 points, or 0.3%, to 2,986.96.

Dow Jones Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 13,155.13 up 81.09 or 0.62% from Thursday's close of 13,074.04. For the week the Dow was up 129.55 or 0.09% from last Friday's close of 13,025.58. For the year the Dow is up 7.67%. Of the Dow components 24 gained and 6 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up $2.25 and percentage-wise was J.P. Morgan 2.63%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Microsoft down 27 cents or 1.01%.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,713.01 up 10.56 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,702.45. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. Friday's 12/7/12 MarketWatch 4:24 pm by Wallace Witkowski says most U.S. stocks finished higher Friday as better-than-expected, but shaky, jobs numbers appeared to outweigh a drop in December consumer sentiment. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA+0.62% rose 81.09 points, or 0.6%, to close at 13,155.13, for a gain of 1% for the week. The S&P 500 Index /SPX+0.29%finished up 4.13 points, or 0.3%, at 1,418.07, for a 0.1% gain for the week. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP-0.38% , however, closed down 11.23 points, or 0.4%, to 2,978.04, for a weekly loss of 1.1%, weighed down by Apple Inc. AAPL-2.56%shares, which fell 2.6% for the day and 8.9% for the week.
