Sat. NYT pB6 "Shares cotninue to slide, awaiting a budget accord" by Reuters says stocks fell Fri as another delcine in Apple took a toll & investors unloaded some shares due to the uncertainty re: the DC budget negotiations.

.As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Monday's  trailing P/E ratio is 14.74 up from Saturday's  trailing P/E ratio of 14.68 (year ago it was 12.84); Monday's P/E estimate is 12.59 up from Saturday' s  P/E estimate of 12.52 (year ago it was 12.20) and Monday's   dividend yield is 2.68 up from Saturday's dividend yield of 2.67 (last year it was 2.68). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,710.39 down 4.65 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,715.04. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.01 down 16 cents from Thursday's average of $57.17. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.34 (DIS/UNH) down 41 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $51.75. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $465 ($171,504 - $171,039).

Friday's 12/14/12 MarketWatch 4:14 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks fell Friday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA-0.27% and the S&P 500 index SPX-0.41%tallying their first weekly drop in four, as investors fretted over the lack of a budget deal. Apple Inc.AAPL-3.76% led the technology sector lower after UBS AG cut its price estimate for shares of the consumer technology company. The absence of a comprehensive fiscal policy "is confounding investors and certainly businesses," said Eric Wiegand, senior portfolio manager for The Private Client Reserve, a division of U.S. Bank Wealth Management. Down 0.2% for the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 35.71 points, or 0.3%, to 13,135.01. The S&P 500 shed 5.87 points, or 0.4%, to 1,413.58, off 0.3% from the prior Friday's close. The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP-0.70%declined 20.83 points, or 0.7%, to 2,971.33, down 0.2% for the week, its second consecutive weekly drop.
