A read of the print editions of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal & amp;amp, Financial Times, New York Times, Investor's Business Daily, USA Today, Atlanta Journal and Constituion & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 12,951.78 down 13.82 or 0.11% from Monday's close of 12,965.56.For the year the Dow is up 6.01%.  Of the Dow components 16 gained and 14 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Walmart up 78 cents and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard up 5.05%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Chevron down 65 cents and percentage-wise was Verizon down 0.98%.

WSJ pC4 "DJIA slips with cliff in focus" by Jonathan Cheng says US stocks finished a quiet day of trading in negative territory as telecom and utilities stocks sputtered.  Verizon and AT&T lost 1% and 0.6% while Home Depot fell 74 cents.  Hewlett-Packard was up 66 cents and Intel was up 43 cents.

NYT pB4 "As budget talks continue, markets change little" by AP says stocks closed little changed Tues as budget talks continued in D.C.

IBD pB6 "Indexes little changed, but some leaders make moves" by Vic Reklaitis says stocks finished narrowly mixed tues after struggling for direction & trading in a tight range as the action saw higher volume.  Current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.

Fin Times p24 "Darden lurches on weak earnings while Apple leads tech retreat" by Anora Mahmudova says US equity markets lacked conviction & cont'd on a downtrend with investors waiting for news about fiscal cliff negotiations.

As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of   Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.42 down from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.46 (year ago it was 13.14); Wednesday's P/E estimate is 12.35 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.35 (year ago it was 12.35) and today's dividend yield is 2.66 up from Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.65 (last year it was 2.59). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,686.53 down 1.79 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,688.32. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.22 down 6 cents from Monday's average of $56.28. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.44 (DIS/UNH) down 15 cents from Monday's median closing price of $51.59. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $179 ($168,832- $168,653).

Tuesday's MarketWatch 4:06 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. Stocks finished slightly lower on Tuesday, as Wall Street adopted a wait-and-see approach to political wrangling over averting steep tax hikes and spending cuts slated to start in January that could push the economy into recession. "There's a better than even chance that they will come up with a compromise without the market forcing them to by early next year," said Jeffrey Kleintop, chief market strategist at LPL Financial in Boston. And should the political wrangling persist past Dec. 31, President Barack Obama could, for instance, "instruct the Treasury secretary not to increase payroll taxes, so there are a few things that could be done to blunt the impact as negotiations continue," Kleintop said. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA-0.11% fell 13.90 points, or 0.1%, to 12,951.70. The S&P 500 index SPX-0.17% shed 2.42 points, or 0.2%, to 1,407.04. The Nasdaq Composite COMP-0.18% lost 5.51 points, or 0.2%, to 2,996.68.
