The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 14,009.79 up 149.21 or 1.07% from Thursday's close of 13,860.58. For the week the Dow was up 113.81 or 0.80% from last Friday's close of 13,895.98. Of the Dow components 22 gained and 2 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was United Technologies up $2.27 and percentage-wise was Bank of America up 3.45%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Merck down $1.42 or 3.28%.

As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's opening trailing P/E ratio is 15.29 unchanged from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 15.29 (year ago it was 14.00); today's P/E estimate is 12.28 unchanged from Thursday' s P/E estimate of 12.28 (year ago it was 12.15) and today's dividend yield is 2.53 up from yesterday's opening dividend yield of 2.51 (last year it was 2.52). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,824.30 up 19.43 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,804.87. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for Monday by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the increase in Friday's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $60.81 up 65 cents from Thursday's average of $60.16. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.18 (DIS/UNH) up 59 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $54.59. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,943( $82,430-$180,487).

The January unemployment rate edged up 0.1% to stand at 7.9%. 
The University of Michigan-Thomson Reuters index of consumer sentiment for January climbed to 73.8 from 72.9 at the end of the previous month. There was a raft of other economic data, both in the U.S. and overseas, for investors to pick through. Data from the euro zone showed the manufacturing sector continued to shrink in January, but at the slowest pace in 11 months.A similar measure of U.S. manufacturing reached the highest level since April.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 13,860.58 down 49.84 or 0.36% from Wednesday's close of 13,910.42. For the year the Dow is up 5.77%. Of the Dow components 11 gained and 19 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Travelers up 89 cents or 1.15%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was United Technologies down $1.16 and percentage-wise was Intel down 1.54%.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,804.87 down 6.49 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,811.36. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for Monday by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the decrease in Moniday's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $60.16 down 22 cents from Wednesday's average of $60.38. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.59 (DIS/UNH) down 55 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $55.14. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $649 ($181,136 - $180,487).

MarketWatch Thursday 1/31/13 4:13 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stock fell Thursday, reducing what still proved to be a strikingly strong start to the year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA-0.36% fell 49.84 points, or 0.4%, to 13,860.58, leaving it with a 5.8% gain for January, its best monthly rise since October 2011 and its strongest monthly start to a year since 1994. The S&P 500 index SPX-0.26% lost 3.85 points, or 0.3%, to 1,498.11, leaving it up 5% for the month. The Nasdaq Composite COMP-0.01%retreated fractionally to 3,142.13, giving it a 4% January rise.
