Post No. 2,045 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 13,982.91 down 35.79 or 0.26% from Tuesday's close of 14,018.7. Of the Dow components 14 gained and 16 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Procter & Gamble up 58 cents and percentage-wise was GE up 3.59%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing down $1.21 or 1.59%.
As of the open of the market on Wednesay the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.31 up from yesterday's opening trailing P/E ratio of 15.26 (year ago it was 14.37); today's P/E estimate is 12.54 unchanged from Tuesday' s P/E estimate of 12.54 (year ago it was 12.26) and today's opening dividend yield is 2.47 down from yesterday's opening dividend yield of 2.48 (last year it was 2.50). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,820.80 down 4.86 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,825.46. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $60.69 down 16 cents from yesterday's average of $60.85. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.10 (DIS/UNH) up 12 cents from yesterday's median closing price of $55.98. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Wednesay morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $486 ($182,546- $182,080 ).
MarketWatch Wednesday 2/12/13 4:39 by Wallace Witkowski & Polya Lesova says U.S. stocks closed fractionally higher Wednesday, while blue chips declined, as positive market momentum mixed with investor anticipation of an overdue correction. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.26% fell 35.79 points, or 0.3%, to close at 13,982.81, below its five-year closing high of 14,018.70 on Tuesday. Shares of fast-food giant McDonald’s Corp.MCD -1.16% were a significant drag on the price-weighted index. Shares dropped 1.2% to $94.00. While there was some speculation that a call from President Barack Obama to raise the federal minimum wage to $9 an hour from $7.25 weighed on McDonald’s shares, analysts generally dismissed it as being a factor.
General Electric Co. GE +3.59% was the biggest gainer on the Dow, with shares up 3.6% to $23.39, following an announcement it would sell the rest of its stake in NBCUniversal for $16.7 billion to Comcast Corp. CMCSA +2.98% . Comcast, which closed up 3%, and GE were among the top gainers in the S&P 500. Following a 6% run-up in markets in January, stocks over the past week have traded mostly sideways, as investors anticipate some sort of correction. The intraday high-low spread on the Dow over the previous 13 trading days is the tightest it has been in 25 years, according to Bespoke Investment Group. Over the past 13 days, the difference between the Dow’s intraday high and low has been 1.35%, the lowest spread since December 1986, Bespoke said. The spread on the Dow Wednesday was 0.6%. WSJ's Paul Vigna reports traders have a worrisome eye on the horizon as severe budget cuts scheduled for March 1 loom. The investors who are most looking for a pullback are likely the ones who missed out on the December-January rally following a surprisingly positive earnings season, said Brian Belski, chief investment strategist at BMO Capital Markets. “It’s really important to say that people looking for a pullback are the ones who missed the move [up] in the first place,” Belski said. “It’s increasingly dangerous to be diagnosing short-term market moves.”
The S&P 500 indexSPX +0.06% , which fluctuated between slight gains and losses during the session, finished up 0.90 point, or less than 0.1%, to 1,520.33. The index touched an earlier intraday high of 1,524.69, with financials and telecom stocks the biggest losers and industrials and materials the leading gainers among the 10 major industry groups. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite IndexCOMP +0.33% , the strongest index on the day, gained 10.38 points, or 0.3%, to close at 3,196.88. The Nasdaq index touched an intraday high 3,205.52 earlier. Whether market momentum will continue or result in a selloff is hard to predict. Much of the smart money has boosted long positions into equities lately, according to a recent report from Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
“You’re seeing lots of macro hedge funds more allocated toward stocks,” said Bill Stone, chief investment strategist at PNC Asset Management Group. While investors who missed out on the rally may be the ones hoping for a pullback, the fact that a pullback hasn’t happened in a while is difficult to ignore. According to Stone, the broader stock market has gone 60 trading days without a 5% pullback, and 342 trading days without a 10% pullback. That’s compared with an average 49 trading days for a 5% pullback, and 161 trading days for a 10% pullback, using data going back to the 1920s, Stone said. Along those lines, not only did Goldman Sachs downgrade its short-term outlook on stocks earlier in the week but UBS is saying that stocks are overbought. Advancing stocks outpaced decliners about 18 to 12 on the NYSE, and by 13 to 10 on the Nasdaq. Composite volume for NYSE-listed stocks topped 3.3 billion shares, and 1.8 billion shares for Nasdaq-listed stocks. Before the opening bell, data showed that U.S. retail sales rose a seasonally adjusted 0.1% in January, which was broadly in line with expectations. The data indicated that a tax increase at the beginning of the year has started to affect consumers. In Washington, President Barack Obama delivered the State of the Union address on Tuesday evening. The president called on lawmakers to come together and end the “manufactured” crisis over the federal budget deficit, while also urging Congress to raise the minimum wage to $9 an hour from the current $7.25 rate. In other corporate news, Deere & Co. DE -3.50% said fiscal-first-quarter earnings rose to $1.65 a share from $1.30 a year earlier. The company’s shares, however, dropped 3.3%.In the bond market, yields on 10-year Treasury notes 10_YEAR -0.05% rose 5 basis points to 2.03%, following a $24 billion auction of 10-year notes at a yield of 2.046%.

MarketWatch Tuesday 2/12/13 5:01 by Wallace Witkowski & Polya Lesova says U.S. stocks
pushed against resistance levels Tuesday as blue chips, led by the financial sector, closed at levels not seen in more than five years. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.34% rose 47.46 points, or 0.3%, to close at 14,018.70, with 23 of 30 components finishing in positive territory. Tuesday’s close is the best since Oct. 12, 2007, and 1% off its record close of 14,164.53, set on Oct. 9, 2007. The index hit an intraday high of 14,038.97 on Tuesday. Wall Street Journal’s Paul Vigna reports traders have a wary eye on President Obama's agenda he'll lay out in his State of the Union address.
Financial stocks boosted blue chips with Bank of America Corp. BAC +0.20% leading the way with a 3.3% gain. Shares of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. JPM +0.99% rose 1%, Travelers Cos. TRV +0.87% advanced 0.9%, and American Express Co. AXP +0.35% closed 0.4% higher. Coca-Cola Co. KO -2.72% was the worst performer on the Dow industrials, declining 2.7%, after the beverage giant’s quarterly revenue growth came in below analyst estimates. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.16% advanced 2.42 points, or 0.2%, to 1,519.43, with technology the biggest decliner and financials the top gainer among the 10 major industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP -0.17% , after a brief swing into positive territory, closed down 5.51 points, or 0.2%, at 3,186.49. Apple Inc. AAPL -2.51% shares ended near their lows of the session, down 2.5% at $467.90. The iPhone maker presented at a Goldman Sachs investment conference in San Francisco. Apple CEO Tim Cook told investors at the conference that the company did not plan to wage a proxy battle against hedge-fund manager David Einhorn over a proposal to issue preferred stock. Also in the tech sector, shares of Facebook Inc. FB -3.15% fell 3.2%.The stock market is undergoing an epic struggle right now, having been in a secular bear market for the past 13 years, said Marty Leclerc, principal at Barrack Yard Advisors. With the stock market at multiyear highs, and multiyear resistance levels, we would need another 30% rally over the next year to break out of the bear market, he said. “We do think it’s a dangerous tipping point,” Leclerc said. “Either the market will go up 30% in the next year or we’ll have a 20% to 25% decline from these levels.” Advancers outnumbered decliners about 2 to 1 on the NYSE, and 14 to 9 on the Nasdaq. Composite volume was 3.31 billion shares on the NYSE and 1.77 billion for Nasdaq-listed stocks. Volume was well above that of Friday and Monday, when trading levels were their lightest of the year to date. It was a busy day for Fed officials. Federal Reserve voting member Esther George, the lone “no” vote at the central bank’s meeting last month, said the U.S. economy is being put at risk when the Fed begins to sell the very securities it is buying. Also, Atlanta Fed’s Dennis Lockhart said in Madrid that 2013 will not be a breakout year for the U.S. economy. After the market close on Tuesday evening, President Barack Obama will deliver the State of the Union address. “The markets want to see if there is anything new for the direction of the country and the economy,” said Adam Sarhan, chief executive of New York-based Sarhan Capital.
“The pullbacks we’ve seen so far have been very, very mild and that in and of itself is healthy because it shows that sellers are nowhere to be seen. And it shows buyers are still clearly in control of this market,” Sarhan said. On the corporate front, shares of Michael Kors Holdings Ltd. jumped nearly 9% as the company reported a surge in fiscal third-quarter earnings helped by sharply higher same-store sales.
