A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.87 up 0.21 from Friday's average closing price of $55.66. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $47.58 (AXP/JPM) down 0.04 from Friday's median closing price of $47.62. MarketWatch Monday 5/9/11 4:21 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks rose for a second session Monday, as energy and natural-resource companies rebounded along with commodities after last week’s rout, but concerns lingered over how long Wall Street’s eight-month rise could last. “We’re still in an intermediate uptrend — and should be — as long as the Fed is there to support us,” said Mike Rubino, chief executive officer of Rubino Financial Group, of the Federal Reserve’s current bond-buying program, also known as quantitative easing. “Eventually the party is going to end and fiscal austerity is going to set in. The question is when,” Rubino added. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 45.94 points, or 0.4%, to finish at 12,684.68, with 20 of its 30 components ending the session in positive territory, including shares of McDonald’s Corp., up 0.8% after the fast-food chain reported a rise in global sales for last month. The S&P 500 added 6.09 points, or 0.5%, to 1,346.29, with energy and natural-resource stocks faring best and financials the sole laggards among its 10 industry groups. As oil futures closed above $102 a barrel in New York, energy companies on the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index collectively rose 1.6%, with Pioneer Natural Resources Co. and Marathon Oil Corp. among the notable advancers, both up more than 5%. “The hard bounce in gold, silver and oil has spilled over to their associated equities in a relief rally,” said Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel Nicolaus & Co. Citigroup Inc.’s shares fell 2.3% after the bank’s 1-for-10 reverse stock split, which shrank the number of its shares outstanding to about 2.9 billion. Read more about Citi’s reverse split. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 15.69 points, or 0.6%, to 2,843.25. For every stock falling, more than two gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume topping 778 million shares by the close. Oil prices rallied 5.5% to end at $102.55 a barrel in New York, after dropping 15% last week, its largest weekly decline since December 2008. Corporate deal-making was also in play, with drug manufacturer Alkermes Inc. / saying it would buy a unit of Ireland’s Elan Corp. -0.93% in a deal worth $960 million. Separately, Hertz Global Holdings Inc. boosted its bid for Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc. in an effort to top a rival offer for the car-rental company by Avis Budget Group Inc. Before Monday’s opening bell, Standard & Poor’s lowered Greece’s credit rating, citing risks that the country would have to work out an extension on its debt repayments. The rating company’s move came as European officials met to consider whether Greece needs more help with its debt. On Friday, an unexpectedly upbeat payrolls report helped fuel modest gains in U.S. markets, with the Dow rising 54.57 points for its first advance in three days, trimming its weekly decline to 1.3%. Other recent economic reports have been less upbeat, with the economy expanding at a less-than-expected 1.8% in the first quarter. The data have stood in contrast with corporate results that, as of Friday, included quarterly results from 88% of the S&P 500 companies, with 69% surprising to the upside on earnings and 67% beating Wall Street’s revenue expectations. “Better-than-expected earnings followed by upward guidance revisions have been a big reason why the stock market held up as well as it did last week, following its decent April gain,” wrote Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at Davidson Cos.
