Post No. 1,298 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of November 1, 2011.

A read of the print editions of Wednesday's The Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga-Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 11,657.96 down 297.05 or 2.48% from Monday's close of 11,955.01. For the year the Dow is up 0.69%. Of the 30 Dow components only Pfizer gained and 29 declined. The only gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Pfizer PFE $19.33 +0.07 0.36% 74,067,815 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM $181.35 -3.28 1.78% 5,777,766 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $6.4 -0.43 6.3% 365,526,147 NYSE.

WSJ pC4 "Dow takes another drubbing" by Steve Russolillo says stocks tumbled for a 2nd straight session with fin'l shares leading the retreat as Greece's plans for a referendum fueled worries that the eurozone bailout plan might fall apart. Bank of America led the Dow lower off 43 cents while JPMorgan was down $2.05 and is charted under Bad News. Pfizer was the lone gainer up 7 cents.

Fin times p20 "Morgan Stanley leads banks lower due to concerns over its exposure" by Ajay Makan says Wall St tumbled in early trading as investors absorbed a barrage of bad news from Europe & poor economic data from China.

USA Today p4B "US stock markets reel after Greece's referendum news" by Bloomberg says stocks stumbled again Tues capping off the S&P's biggest 2 day slump in a month on concern that a Greece referendum pledged by Prime Minister of Greece may thwart europe's bailout.

As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.58 down from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.91 (year ago it was 14.25); Wednesday's P/E estimate is 12.59 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 12.59 (year ago it was 13.15), and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.66 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.59 (last year it was 2.53). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,540.36 down 39.25 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,579.61. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.35 down 1.30 from Monday's average closing price of $52.65. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $41.68 (DD/VZ) down 0.99 from Monday's median closing price of 42.67. If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $3,925 ($157,961 - $154,036).

MarketWatch Tuesday 11/1/11 4:44 pm by Laura Mandaro says US stocks closed sharply lower for the second straight session Tuesday as investors fretted over the Greek government's efforts to call a referendum on a recent bailout agreement with international lenders, possibly ushering in Greece's exit from the euro zone. The S&P 500 /quotes/zigman/3870025 SPX -2.79% lost 35.02 points, or 2.8%, to 1,218.28. A 4.7% drop in financial stocks led declines across all sectors.
