Post No. 1,341 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of November 1, 2011.

A read of the print editions of Saturday's/Sunday's combined Wall St. Journal & each of Sun's & Sat's New York Times & Miami Herald yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 11,231.78 down 25.77 or 0.23% from Wednesday's close of 11,257.66. For the week the Dow is down points 563.33 points or 4.78% from last Friday's close of 11,795.11. For the year the Dow is down 3.0%. Of the 30 Dow components 13 gained 2 were unchanged and 15 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Travelers TRV $53.41 +0.65 1.23% 2,186,605 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Chevron CVX $92.29 -1.46 1.56% 5,257,266 NYSE.

Sat NYT pB6 "Dismal week ends with more of same" by aP says he worst week for the stock market in 2 months ended with a whimper in thin trading Fri as major indexes wavered throughout Fri's session which was shortened because it was the day after Thanksgiving. Worries about Europe's debt crisis flared up again after Italy had to pay 7.8% to borrow for 2 years at a debt auction. It was another sign that investors were increasingly hesitant to lend to European nations.

As of the close of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B5 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Saturday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.15 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.18 (year ago it was 14.14); Saturday's P/E estimate is 11.55 down from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.10 (year ago it was 13.17), and today's dividend yield is 2.79 up from Friday's dividend yield of 2.78 (last year it was 2.57). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,484.04 down 3.41 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,487.45. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.47 down $0.11 from Wednesday's average closing price of $49.58. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $39.61 (DD/VZ) down 0.11 from Wednesday's median closing price of $39.72. The lowest volume was MMM $76.13 +0.59 0.78% 2,093,982 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $5.17 +0.03 0.58% 138,425,097 NYSE.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $341 ($148,745 - $148,404).

MarketWatch Friday 11/25/11 1:54 pm by Myra P. Saefong says US stocks finished modestly lower Friday, with all three benchmark indexes ending lower for the week as rising euro-zone bond yields kept traders on edge about Europe’s debt crisis during a holiday-shortened trading session.“I would have expected a little oversold bounce but Europe intervened,” said Matthew Tuttle, chief investment officer at Tuttle Wealth Management, LLC in Stamford, Conn.AT&T said it would take a $4 billion charge in the final quarter, an acknowledgment that the company's proposed $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile USA faces an increasingly uphill battle. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 25.77 points, or 0.2%, to close at 11.231.78 after tapping a high of 11,361.47 during the session.Travelers Cos. Inc. shares added 1.2%. The stock was the biggest gainer on the Dow, with just 13 of the benchmark’s 30 components finishing higher. The blue-chip Dow, which fell more than 236 points on Wednesday to close at a more than six-week low, finished 4.8% lower for the week. The U.S. trading session was shorter than usual on Friday, with trading on the New York Stock Exchange closing at 1 p.m. Eastern time.“This week was all Europe related, we saw the possibility of the ‘disaster scenario’ looming as there has always been the fear of this spreading to the ‘healthy’ countries in Europe,” said Tuttle. “The failed German bund auction could be the beginning of this, which would be a huge deal.”A poorly received sale of 10-year German bunds on Wednesday sparked a selloff in German paper. In Europe Friday, the Italian government sold 8 billion euros ($10.7 billion) of six-month Treasury bills, producing an average yield of 6.50%, up from 3.54% in an Oct. 26 sale. The news reinforced concerns that the spread of the debt crisis may make it very difficult for Italy to meet its funding needs.Markets may soon “wake up to the idea that an event in Europe could occur very, very soon,” said Michael Gayed, chief investment strategist at Pension Partners LLC. “With the Italian two-year spike, its clear that fragility in Europe will remain first in mind above all else,” he said . “No amount of holiday sales can counter a collapse in Europe.”
The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index declined by 3.12 points, or 0.3%, to finish at 1,158.67, with energy logging the biggest losses among its 10 industry groups. The index saw a weekly loss of 4.7%.The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite each logged their seventh-losing session in a row, with the S&P 500 suffering from its worst losing streak since the seven session decline that ended on Aug. 2.The Nasdaq closed down 0.8%, or 18.57 points, at 2,441.51 after touching a high of 2,477.03. For the week, it fell 5.1%.Bucking the trend, shares of biotechnology group Pozen Inc. rallied 45% to $3.62. In a regulatory filing on Wednesday, Pozen said it has sold its rights to future royalties on U.S. sales of its pain reliever compound MT 400 to CPPIB Credit Investments for $75 million up-front plus certain payments.
Amarin Corp.’s stock also climbed 6.5% to $7.10 after the company said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration accepted for review an application for a drug to treat patients with high levels of triglycerides, a type of blood fat. For every stock that rose more than one fell on the NYSE, where trading volume was especially anemic after the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday. Nearly 442 million shares traded on the NYSE. Composite volume was at nearly 1.7 billion. In the U.S. on Thursday, “Americans sat around at the dining table givingsthanks,” said Brian Greenberg, owner of wealth management firm Brian Greenberg & Associates.“Those who are of the investment persuasion were thankful that only five weeks remained in this roller coaster of a stock market,” he said. “ And those who profit by volatility such as the brokerage houses, gave thanks for this the most generous of years ... saddened to know that only five weeks remained.”
