Stocks fell sharply in morning trading but rebounded after the International Monetary fund said it wold extend new shorterm lines of credit to developed countries.

USA Today p4B "Disappointing economicgrowth dries markets down further" by Bloomberg News stocks fell again Tues driving the S&P 500 index to its longest slump in almost 4 months at slower than estimated economic growth overshadowed signs the Fed Res may provide more stimulus.

As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.43 up from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.40 (year ago it was 14.08); Wednesday's P/E estimate is 12.10 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.10 (year ago it was 13.17), and today's dividend yield is 2.72 up from Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.71 (last year it was 2.58). The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.62 down $0.24 from Monday's average closing price of $50.86. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $40.80 (DD/VZ) up 0.02 from Monday's median closing price of 40.78. If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $709 ($152,574 - $151,865.37).

MarketWatch Tuesday 11/22/11 5:02 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks ended lower Tuesday, with the S&P 500 down for a fifth session, as further turmoil in Italian and Spanish markets heightened investor anxiety about the global economic picture.
“It’s another day of rising bond yields in Europe. It’s still Europe that’s the problem,” said Peter Bookvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak.U.S. investors are worried about prospects for “economic collateral damage,” he added. After rising as much as 24 points and falling as much as 113 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 53.59 points, or 0.5%, to 11,493.72. Of 30 components, 22 ended with losses.Among blue-chip decliners, Hewlett-Packard Co. shares fell 0.8%, a day after Meg Whitman, on the job for two months as H-P’s chief executive, told investors to curb their expectations for fiscal 2012 results. Online retailers are doing online holiday promotions early as they battle for consumer dollars and try to get ahead of traditional retailers, who have been moving up their Black Friday deals.Stocks came off their lows and even dabbled briefly in positive territory after the International Monetary Fund offered a new credit to address contagion risks and Federal Reserve minutes showed that some officials favor a further easing of monetary policy.“A few members indicated that they believed the economic outlook might warrant additional policy accommodation,” the central bank said in the minutes released Tuesday afternoon. Read more on FOMC minutes. But worries about European debt and liquidity among its banks have spread to Italy, Spain and France, all of which are dealing with escalating borrowing costs as yields on government bonds climbed. Yields on Italy’s 10-year note on Tuesday climbed to 6.78% and Spain’s benchmark Treasury note rose to 6.58%.
The Commerce Department on Tuesday said the U.S. economy grew at a 2% pace in the third quarter, down from an annualized pace of 2.5% previously estimated. Read more on third-quarter GDP.The report was “bullish going forward,” since it involved a large decline in inventories, setting manufacturers up for a rebuild cycle in the future, said Boockvar. That said, Boockvar largely dismissed the GDP report as “old news” with little impact on the equities market.
