http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 1,956 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 12/7/12 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 12/7/12.

A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times &amp, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constituion and Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 13,350.96 up 115.57 or 0.87% from Monday's close of 13,235.39. For the year the Dow is up 9.28%. Of the Dow components 26 gained and 4 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was United Technologies up $2.24 and percentage-wise was again Bank of America up 3.27 %. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Home Depot down 34 cents and percentage-wise was GE down 1.09%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks hit 2 month high after Dow triple double" by Chris Dieterich et al says the Dow finished at its highest in 2 months with energy & tech shares leading as all sectors gained.  Bank of America climbed 36 cents or 3.3% after an upgrade to buy from bank analyst Meredith Whitney.

USA Today p1B "Stocks cilmb as lawmakers play nicer on fiscal cliff" by matt Krantz says growing belief that politicians might succeed at averting the fiscal cliff sent stocks higher Tues.

IBD pB6 "Indexes rally into close again as vol climbs" by Victor Reklatis says stocks surged a 2nd straight day as Tuesday's action saw solid gains in higher trade as the current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.

Fin Times p22 "Gunmakers tumble on Cerberus plan to sell its stake in Freedom" by Anora Mahmudova says US equity markets finished the day higher as investors remained optimistic about a budget deal.  Bank of America gained 3.2% and JPMorgan was up 0.9%.

NYT pB9 "Led by energy and technology, shares rise on hopes for budget accord" and AJC pA13 "Budget hopes sustain rally" by AP says stocks advanced Tues pushing the S&P to its highest close in 2 months due to a close budget deal.

.As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.84 up from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.60 (year ago it was 13.09); today's P/E estimate is 12.59 unchanged from Tuesday' s P/E estimate of 12.59 (year ago it was 12.20) and today's dividend yield is 2.60 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.62 (last year it was 2.62). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,738.51 up 15.05 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,723.46. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the increase in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.95 up 50 cents from Monday's average of $57.45. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.59 (DIS/UNH) up 76 cents from Monday's median closing price of $51.83. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,505 ($173,851- $172,346).

Tuesday's 12/18/12 MarketWatch 4:11 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocksextended gains into a second session Tuesday, rising on signs of progress on Capitol Hill in reaching an accord to avoid steep spending cuts and tax increases next year. "The biggest tax being levied on the American people right now is the uncertainty tax, and President Obama and House Republicans now have the opportunity to lower it considerably," said David Kelly, chief market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.87% rose 115.57 points, or 0.9%, to 13,350.96. The S&P 500 index SPX +1.15% advanced 16.43 points, or 1.2%, to 1,446.79. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.46% added 43.93 points, or 1.5%, to 3,054.53.
