12/8/12 Sat. Barron's Likes JPMorgan Chase

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 1,938 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 12/7/12 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 12/7/12.

A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's and Investor's Business Daily, and the combined Sat/Sun issues of  the Wall St. Journal & amp;amp, Financial Times; and Saturday's New York Times & Atlanta Journal and Constituion yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 13,155.13 up 81.09 or 0.62% from Thursday's close of 13,074.04. For the week the Dow is up 129.55 or 0.09% from last Friday's close of 13,025.58. For the year the Dow is up 7.67%. Of the Dow components 24 gained and 6 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up $2.25 and percentage-wise was J.P. Morgan 2.63%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Microsoft down 27 cents or 1.01%.

IBD pB8 "Stocks indexes end mixed; Apple weighs on Nasdaq by Paul Whitfield says stocks finished mixed Fri as volume declined for a 2nd day and the current outlook remains a confirmed uptrend.

Sat. WSJ pB5 "For Dow, three is a charm" by Matt Jarzemskys ays Bluce chip stocks rose, capping their 3rd straight weekly advance on a bullish note, after Nov. job growth topped forecasts.

As of the close of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Saturday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.62 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.55 (year ago it was 13.18); Saturday's P/E estimate is 12.52 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.35 (year ago it was 12.33) and Saturday's dividend yield is 2.71  up from Friday's dividend yield of 2.65  (last year it was 2.59). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,713.01 up 10.56 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,702.45. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the increase in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.10 up 35 cents from Thursday's average of $56.75. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.56 (DIS/UNH) up 20 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $51.36. The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,056 ($171,301 - $170,245).

Friday's 12/7/12 MarketWatch 4:24 pm by Wallace Witkowski says most U.S. stocks finished higher Friday as better-than-expected, but shaky, jobs numbers appeared to outweigh a drop in December consumer sentiment. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA+0.62% rose 81.09 points, or 0.6%, to close at 13,155.13, for a gain of 1% for the week. The S&P 500 Index /SPX+0.29%finished up 4.13 points, or 0.3%, at 1,418.07, for a 0.1% gain for the week. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP-0.38% , however, closed down 11.23 points, or 0.4%, to 2,978.04, for a weekly loss of 1.1%, weighed down by Apple Inc. AAPL-2.56%shares, which fell 2.6% for the day and 8.9% for the week.
