6/16/14 Mon am Walmart in Labor Dispute in China

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,694 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's, Investor's Business Daily,Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Friday at 16775.74 up 41.55 or 0.25% from Thursday's close of 16734.19. For the week the Dow is down 148.54 or 0.88% from last Friday's close of 16924.28. For the year the Dow is up 1.2%. Of the Dow components  17  gained, 3 were unchanged and  20   declined.   The biggest gainer dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Intel $1.91 and 6.83%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Visa down 48 cents and percentage-wise was  Walmart down 0.59%.

WSJ pB1 "Jolts break calm on Wall Street" by Matt Jarzemsky says after weeks of tranquility investors have been jolted into action.

IBD pB8 "Stocks regain their calm; many leaders in cup bases" by Paul Whitfield says stocks strolled ahead in quiet vol Friday as Friday's action was up in lower vol & the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of  the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of  Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.41 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.37 (last year it was 16.47).  Monday's P/E estimate is 15.00 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 15.13 (year ago it was 13.62) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.21  up from  Friday's dividend yield of 2.18 (last year it was 2.42). The Dow's all-time high was 16,945.92 on June1-10,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2612.25 up 6.37  from  Thursday's   numerator of 2605.78.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $87.07 up 21 cents from Thursday's  average closing price of $86.86.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.18   (UNH/PG) down 42 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $79.60 (UNH/PG). The lowest volume was  3M and the highest volume was Intel.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $637   ($261,225 - $260,578).

6/13/14 Friday 4:28    pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says the The U.S. stock market finished the week with the biggest losses in two months, snapping the longest weekly rally this year.
On Friday, the main benchmarks rose modestly but trading was choppy with news out of Iraq resulting in price swings in late trade. Investors turned cautious this week after an intensifying sectarian conflict in Iraq sent oil prices soaring.
On Friday, after the initial negative reaction to the disappointing consumer sentiment data, the market staged a modest rebound.

The S&P 500SPX +0.31%  closed 6.04 points, or 0.3%, higher at 1,936.15, but recorded a 0.7% loss over the week.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.25%  added 41.49 points, or 0.3%, to 16,775.58. The blue-chip index lost 0.9% over the past five days. The
The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.30%  ended the day up 13.02 points, or 0.3% at 4,310.65 and declined 0.3% over the week.
Todd Salamone, director of research at Schaeffer’s Investment Research, said that there has been so much fear about a potential correction that investors positioned themselves with a lot of protection trades.
“If you look at a 30-min chart going back a few months, it’s clear that a lot of trading is done on technical levels,” Salamone said.
Brian Clancy of the Davidson Multi-Cap Equity Fund continues to have a “positive bias” on stocks for the long-term. He calls this week’s weakness “just the typical puts and takes” of the market.
In economic news, the University of Michigan/Thomson Reuters sentiment gauge fell in June to 81.2 — the lowest level in three months. Economists polled by MarketWatch expected an increase.
Separately, government data ahead of the open showed wholesale prices for May fell unexpectedly.
