6/4/14 Wed pm Dow Closes at 16737.53 up 15.19 or 0.09%

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,677 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 5/30/14 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings as of 5/30/14.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Wednesday at 16737.53 up 15.19 or 0.09% from Tuesday's close of 16722.34. Of the Dow components 16  gained and  14 declined.   The biggest gainer dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Travelers up $1.26 or 1.35%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was United Technologies down 68 cents and percentage-wise was  GE down 0.9%.

As of the open of  the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.36 down from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.38 (last year it was 16.58).  Wednesday's P/E estimate is 14.91 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 14.91 (year ago it was 14.05) and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.18 unchanged from Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.18 (last year it was 2.35). The Dow's all-time high was 16,743.63 on June 2,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2606.30 up 2.37  from  Tuesday's   numerator of 2603.93.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.88 up 8 cents from Tuesday's  average closing price of $86.80.  The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80.52   (UNH/HD) up 22 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $80.30 (PG/HD). The lowest volume was  3M  and the highest volume was AT&T.

If  Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $237  ($260,630 - $260,393).

6/4/14 Wednesday 4:24    pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says the U.S. stock market ended Wednesday with modest gains that sent the benchmark S&P 500 index to a record level for the 16th time this year. A mixed bag of economic reports sent shares lower in early trade, but investors appeared to have shrugged them off by the afternoon.
Private-sector hiring slowed in May, and April’s outsize gains were revised down. The trade deficit jumped in April to a two-year high, above expectations, while productivity in the first quarter declined sharply due to harsh winter.
The only encouraging report on Wednesday came from the Institute for Supply Management, which reported that the service sector activity heated up last month, with the closely watched index jumping to the highest level in 9 months. The S&P 500 closed near session highs, up 3.62 points, or 0.2%, at 1,927.86. The Dow Jones Industrial Average  rose 15.19 points, or 0.1%, to 16,737.53. The Nasdaq Composite ended the day up 17.56 points, or 0.4%, at 4,251.64.
“The outlook for the US economy continues to improve, as the rebound in economic activity is showing up across the sectors,” wrote Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital.
“The setting of new records on a daily basis for the Dow and S&P suggest a summer higher trading range is unfolding. On the other hand, from a technical perspective, the market may be overly complacent and small pullbacks should be expected as the bull trend remains in place,” Cardillo wrote.
Private-sector employers added 179,000 jobs in May, Automatic Data Processing Inc. reported Wednesday. The number was below the expected gain of 210,000.
The U.S. trade deficit surged in April to a two-year high, while U.S. productivity in the first quarter declined at a sharp annual rate — the worst in six years, due to an unusually harsh winter.
On the bright side, growth picked up last month for the U.S. service sector and non-manufacturing companies, with the index tracking the activity rising to the highest reading since August.
Separately, the Federal reserve reported that most regions of the U.S. are continuing to grow at a “modest” and “moderate” pace. The so-called Beige Book found rising consumer spending, healthy manufacturing, but a wobbling residential real estate sector.
Hovnanian Enterprises Inc. shares fell 2.2% Wednesday after reporting second-quarter earnings that fell short of expectations.
In deal news, Protective Life Corp. shares jumped 18% after Japan’s Dai-ichi Life Insurance Co.  said it plans to buy the U.S.-based life insurer for $5.7 billion.
First Solar Inc.   is one of the biggest gainers today in the S&P 500, rising 3.9%. SunPower Corp  is up 7%. U.S. solar companies likely are getting a lift from a U.S. government move that could hurt their Chinese competitors.A 1.1% rise in Apple Inc.   shares helped Nasdaq Composite higher.
In other markets, most Asian equities fell, taking their cue from losses in U.S. stocks Tuesday. In Europe, the benchmark Stoxx Europe 600  closed nearly flat.

6/3/14 Tuesday 4:29    pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says the the U.S. stock market ended Tuesday marginally lower, pausing after three straight days of gains that sent the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average to record levels on Monday.
Investors found little comfort in a factory orders report, which was mostly in line with expectations, and better-than-expected monthly car sales.
The S&P 500 SPX -0.04%  closed less than a point lower at 1,924.24. The Dow industrialsDJIA -0.13%  shed 21.29 points, or 0.1%, to 16,722.34.
The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP -0.07%  ended the day down 3.12 points, or 0.1%, at 4,234.08.
Rob Stein, CEO of Astor Investment Management, said that stocks and long-term government bonds are most likely priced where they should be.
“The economy is growing very slowly, but still growing. The S&P 500 is up about 4% on the year and that is consistent with the current growth environment,” Stein said.
“The 10-year yield at 2.5% is not surprising given that the inflation is at 1%, unemployment in 6s and stalled growth in the first quarter. In fact, we fear slipping into a deflationary environment more than inflation rising,” he added.
Orders for goods produced in U.S. factories rose 0.7% in April, the Commerce Department said Tuesday. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had expected orders to rise 0.6%. Factory orders climbed by a revised 1.5% in March, compared with a prior estimate of 0.9%. Orders for durable goods -- products meant to last at least three years -- rose 0.6% in April. Orders for nondurable goods increased 0.7%.
The auto industry was in focus after car makers released their monthly sales figures.
Shares in General Motors Co. GM +0.03%  and Ford Motors Co.                              +0.67%   rose 1.1% and 0.7% respectively after they released their monthly car sales in the U.S.
GM said U.S. vehicle sales were up 12.6% in May, marking its best monthly performance since August 2008, The Wall Street Journal reported. The results topped analyst expectations.
Ford Motor Co. reported a 3% rise in sales in May. Chrysler Group LLC, owned by Fiat, reported 17% growth in sales in May, as its Jeep and Ram brands continued to deliver strong results.
In deal news, shares of Hillshire Brands Co. HSH -0.58%   jumped 9.5% after Pilgrim’s Pride raised its offer to buy the company for $55 a share in cash, valuing the deal at $7.7 billion. Pilgrim’s Pride said the new bid represents an increase of $1.3 billion from its initial offer. Hillshire said it would talk separately with Pilgrim’s Pride and Tyson Foods Inc. TSN +1.55% , both of which are interested in buying the maker of Jimmy Dean sausages and Sara Lee desserts.
