8/12/14 Tues. am J.P. Morgan to Sell 50% of One Equity Partners

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/
by Dan Kolber

Post No. 2,780 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  as of 8/7/14 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings as of 8/7/14.

A  read of the print editions of  Tuesday's  Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Monday at 16569.98 up 16.05 or 0.10%  from Friday's close of 16553.93. For the year the Dow is down %. Of the Dow components 15  gained, AT&T, Microsoft, and Nike were unchanged and  12  declined.  The biggest gainer   dollar-wise was caterpillar up $1.22 and percentage-wise was Intel up 1.29 %.  The biggest decliner   dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was  Exxon down $1.01 or 1,.01%.

As of the open of  the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Tuesday's trailing P/E   ratio is 15.72 up from Monday's   trailing P/E ratio of 15.58  (last year it was 16.84).  Tuesday's P/E estimate is 14.51 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 14.51 (year ago it was 13.92) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.24 down  from  Monday's dividend yield of 2.50  (last year it was 2.42). The Dow's all-time high was 17113.54 on July 2,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2580.21 up 2.50  from  Friday's   numerator of 2577.71.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.01 up 9 cents from Friday's  average closing price of $85.92.  The median closing price of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.18  (PG/HD) up 54 cents from Friday's median closing price of $81.64 (PG/HD/. The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was GE.

If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $250  ($258,021 -$257,771).

8/11/14 Mon. 4:09 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Carla Mozee  says
U.S. stocks advanced Monday, led by a rally in small-cap companies, though continued tensions in Ukraine and the Middle East put a cap on the S&P 500’s gains.

The Russell 2000 RUT +0.94%   rose 10 points, or 0.9%, to the preliminary 1,141.58. The index of small companies has outperformed the large-cap S&P 500 in the five of the past six sessions, and many analysts see the leadership of small stocks as a sign of improving markets.

The S&P 500 SPX +0.28%  rose 5.32 points, or 0.3%, to 1,936.91, Consumer staples and technology stocks lead the gains.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.10%  gained as much as 75 points in the morning, but pared gains in the afternoon. The blue-chip index closed 16.05 points, or 0.1%, higher at 16,569.98.

The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.70%  ended the day up 30.43 points, or 0.7%, at 4,401.33.

Monday’s rally is being described as a relief rally after a selloff during the previous two weeks. The near-4% pullback on the S&P 500 began as investors fretted the Fed might raise rates sooner than expected in light of recent economic data that were stronger than expected.

Jay Feuerstein, managing director of alternative strategies at money manager Manning & Napier, says Wall Street is worrying unnecessarily. “The Fed under Janet Yellen wants to see a much stronger labor market improvement before raising rates and will tolerate a rise in inflation to aid the economy,” he said.

He said low rates and the improving economy make equities attractive.

“When dividends are yielding higher than 10-year Treasurys, equities will continue to outperform, and we expect a big rally in the fourth quarter,” he added.

Among geopolitical worries, the situation in Iraq remained fluid ,with air strikes slowing the advance of the militant group ISIS. But chaos ensued in Bagdad following an appointment of a new prime minister by the president.

Meanwhile, Russia announced it would send a humanitarian convoy into Eastern Ukraine. That could put a temporary stop to gunfights between the Ukrainian forces and rebels in the region.

Shares of Mannkind MNKD -0.59%  rallied 4.6% after the company reached a licensing deal with Sanofi SNY -0.10%   FR:SAN +0.43%  to develop and sell inhaled insulin drug Afreeza in the U.S.

Shares of Tesla Motors Inc. TSLA +0.07%   rallied 4.6% after an upgrade to buy from Deutsche Bank. The bank also increased its price target on the stock to $310, from $220 a share.

Shares of Dean Foods DF +0.07% slumped 3.9% after the milk and food company reported a wider-than-expected loss and withdrew its full-year outlook.

Kinder Morgan KMI -0.31% jumped 8.8% following plans to consolidate its oil-and-gas pipeline empire into a single company in a $44 billion deal.

In other markets, 10-year Treasury yields 10_YEAR +0.12%   rose. Oil futures CLU4 +0.20% posted minor gains, but gold futures GCZ4 -0.12% retreated. European stocks XX:SXXP +1.37%  rose following last week’s losses, and Asian shares advanced, with Japan’s Nikkei Average JP:NIK +2.38%  up 2.4%.
