8/7/14 Thurs. 4:36 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Barbara Kollmeyer says The U.S. stock market ended Thursday’s session with modest losses, as investors moved out of riskier assets and into gold and U.S. Treasurys.
The drop in stocks, while relatively modest, was global, with Asian and European markets also losing ground.
Key benchmarks hit the day’s lows late in the session. The S&P 500 SPX -0.56%  fell 10.67 points, or 0.6%, to 1,909.57. The benchmark index is now 3.9% off its July 24 record closed, after falling in 4 of the past 6 trading days.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.46%  fell 75.07 points, or 0.5%, to 16,368.27, its lowest close since April 25. The blue-chip index is 4.5% off its July 16 record close after falling in 9 of the past 12 trading days.
The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.46%  fell 20.08 points, or 0.5%, at 4,334.97.
Sara Murray and Nick Timiraos discuss the gender divide in economy and politics, and Elaine Kamarck looks at whether the tea party's influence is on the wane.
In economic news, the number of people who applied for unemployment benefits fell below 300,000 for the second time in three weeks, solidifying a picture of an improving U.S. labor market. Better-than-expected data briefly pushed stocks higher, but gains soon dissipated.
Instead, investors pushed up prices of Treasurys and gold. The yield on a 10-year Treasury note, which falls when prices rise, fell to the lowest level in more than a year, at 2.42%, while gold settled above $1,300 for the second session in a row.
The S&P 500 is now down 3.9% from its peak, hit by fears that the stronger economy could push the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates sooner than expected as well as escalating tensions surrounding Ukraine. On Thursday, Russia banned food imports from the U.S., members of the European Union and other countries in retaliation over sanctions.
“This market got complacent and ahead of itself a few weeks ago, was overbought on technical levels. So the selloff last week was not surprising,” said Paul Zemsky, chief investment officer of multi-asset strategies at Voya Investment Management. “There is nothing in our indicators that signals a larger 10%-15% correction. However, we think the S&P 500 will fall to 1,900 before continuing to march higher.”
Netflix Inc. NFLX +0.16%   shares rallied 4.5% after Chief Executive Reed Hastings. in a Facebook post, said Netflix’s subscriber revenue totaled $1.146 billion last quarter, edging out HBO’s $1.141 billion.

8/6/14 Wed. 4:06 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Barbara Kollmeyer says U.S. stocks ended Wednesday marginally higher, as investors remained cautious in the wake of heightened geopolitical risks and downbeat European economic news.
A lack of risk appetite globally pushed prices of safe-haven assets higher. U.S. Treasurys rallied and gold futures jumped 1.8% above $1,300 per troy ounce, while global equities fell.
The S&P 500 SPX +0.00%  flat at 1,920.23. The Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA +0.08%  gained 13.87 points, or 0.1%, to 16,443.34. The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP +0.05%  added 2.22 points to 4,355.05.
Exchange Traded Funds can be a low-cost, tax-efficient vehicle for investing in stocks. But they are not always the best option. Here are a few situations where buyers should beware.
Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial, said this market has rewarded investors who bought the dips over the past five years.
“August tends to be a weak month for stocks because of seasonality. Most people around the world are on holiday, which means lower volumes. In absence of economic and corporate news, geopolitical headlines will be driving the markets,” Krosby said.
In today’s sole economic news, the U.S. trade deficit shrank in June, largely because imports of petroleum fell to the lowest level since late 2010. Reaction to stronger-than-expected economic data over the past few weeks had been generally negative, as investors worry that accelerating growth may force the Federal Reserve to start raising rates sooner than currently anticipated.

Shares of Walgreen Co.WAG +0.90%  sank 14% after the drugstore chain issued 2016 guidance well below Wall Street guidance. The drugstore also said it will keep headquarters in the U.S., news that will disappoint a group of investors trying to persuade the company to relocate its headquarters to tax-friendly Switzerland.
Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp. /CTSH -.00%  shares plummeted 13% after the information-technology company cut its revenue guidance for the year and projected third-quarter revenue that missed analysts’ expectations.
