8/22/14 Fri. pm Dow Closes at 17001.22 down 38.27 or 0.22%

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/
by Dan Kolber

Post No. 2,798 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Friday at 17001.22 down 38.27 or 38.27%  from Thursday's close of 17039.49.  For the week the Dow is up 338.31 or 2.03% from last Friday's close of 16662.91. Of the Dow components  9 gained and  21 declined.  The biggest gainer   dollar-wise was  Nike up 35 cents and percentage-wise was Merck up 0.54 %.  The biggest decliner   dollar-wise was Johnson & Johnson down $1.09  and percentage-wise was GE down 1.06%.

As of the open of  the market on  Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Friday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.09 up from Thursday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.03  (last year it was 16.09).  Friday's P/E estimate is 14.77 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 14.77 (year ago it was 13.66) and Friday's dividend yield is 2.23 up  from  Thursday's dividend yield of 2.20  (last year it was 2.51). The Dow's all-time high was 17113.54 on July 2,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2647.36 down 5.96   from  Thursday's   numerator of 2653.32.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.25 down 19 cents from Thursday's  average closing price of $88.44.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.33  (UNH/AXP) down 13 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $86.46 (UNH/AXP). The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was GE.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $596  ($265,332 - $264,736 ).

8/22/14 Fri. 4:36 MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis & Carla Mozee says U.S. stocks
closed mostly lower on Friday in the slowest trading day so far this year, with the S&P 500 pulling back from Thursday’s record close. Investors appeared to shrug at speeches by Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen and European Central Bank President Mario Draghi. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.20% slipped by 3.97 points, or 0.2%, to finish at 1,988.40, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.22% shed 38.27 points, or 0.2%, to end at 17,001.22, as each index snapped a four-day winning streak. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.14% bucked the negative trend, tacking on 6.45 points, or 0.1%, to close at 4,538.55.Stocks traded roughly flat after Yellen’s speech, then slumped to session lows after fresh Ukraine-Russia reports before paring losses. The reports said NATO viewed a buildup of Russian forces near Ukraine as alarming, and the organization condemned the entry of a Russian convoy into Ukraine.Careful comments in Jackson Hole: Yellen, at her speech at the annual gathering of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyo., said the economy is getting closer to the Fed’s goals of full employment and stable inflation, and the debate at the central bank is “naturally shifting” to when to raise interest rates. Balancing this more hawkish tone, Yellen said the unemployment rate’s decline overstates the improvement in overall labor market conditions.
“I think the most important takeaway is that as one of the most dovish members of the board, she’s clearly much less dovish than she was,” Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank, told MarketWatch. He said Yellen is now making “more an argument for patience rather than dovishness.”Draghi said the European Central Bank stands ready to take more unconventional action if needed, but it can’t solve the euro zone’s unemployment problem all by itself.Weekly performance: The three main indexes all achieved their third weekly gain in a row. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq both advanced by 1.7% for the week, while the Dow rose 2%.“A number of economic indicators came in fairly positive, and I think that supported the market’s uptrend this week,” said Carin Pai, an equity strategist at wealth manager Fiduciary Trust. She said the data included better-than-expected figures for housing starts and jobless claims, and come amid a mostly strong second-quarter earnings season that also has supported the market’s three-week advance.
Tensions between Ukraine and Russia as well as in the Middle East are causes for short-term volatility, but the resulting market dips are “buying opportunities for money that has been sitting on the sidelines,” she said. While the geopolitical troubles bear watching, they aren’t large enough risks to change her shop’s view on the economy, she said.Low volume, and holidays next week: Composite volumes for the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq dropped to their lowest levels of the year for a full trading day. Next week, holidays could help keep trading volumes at low summertime levels. Monday is a holiday in the U.K., and by the end of next week, many traders in the U.S. may be mostly focused on the Labor Day weekend. Movers and shakers: Keurig Green Mountain Inc. GMCR, +0.03%   surged 13.2% for the best gain in the S&P 500, helped by news of a new licensing deal with Kraft Foods Group Inc. KRFT, -0.07%
Salesforce.com Inc. CRM, +7.34% Ross Stores Inc. ROST, +7.39%  and GameStop Corp. GME, +5.95%  were also big winners in the S&P 500 as investors cheered each company’s quarterly report.

8/21/14 Thurs. 4:36 MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis & Barbara Kollmeyer says
U.S. stocks
U.S. stocks advanced Thursday, with the S&P 500 logging its fourth straight daily gain and closing at a record high.

Reports on existing-home sales and manufacturing topped forecasts, and expectations of dovish notes in Friday’s speech from Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen also boosted sentiment.

The S&P 500 SPX, +0.29%  gained 5.86 points, or 0.3%, to finish at 1,992.37, topping its July 24 finish to set its 28th record close in 2014. The four-day winning streak is the longest since June. During the session, the index hit an intraday record at 1,994.76.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.36% rose 60.36 points, or 0.4%, to 17,039.49, pushing back above the 17,000 level to log its highest close since July 24. The index is off around 0.6% from its all-time closing high. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.12%  rose 5.62 points, or 0.1%, to 4,532.10, ending at its highest level since March 31, 2000.

Today’s market-moving economic data: An August reading for the Philadelphia Fed index, a manufacturing gauge, came in at 28, besting forecasts for a reading of 18, and a manufacturing gauge from Markit also jumped. Meanwhile, sales of existing homes rose 2.4% in July to 5.15 million, above expectations, and initial weekly jobless claims came in basically in line with forecasts.

Thursday’s encouraging economic reports have provided a lift to U.S. stocks, said Kim Caughey Forrest, a portfolio manager and senior equity analyst at Fort Pitt Capital Group. The good news might have been bad news for the stock market, spurring worries the Fed could pull back sooner from its stimulus efforts, but the central bank has been offering “soothing words,” she told MarketWatch.

““It looks like regardless of how long the Fed hawks are talking, the doves are winning at this point,” Forrest said.

Investors further shrugged off the Fed minutes released Wednesday that showed some officials arguing the groundwork should be laid for raising interest rates sooner than expected. A hike is hardly imminent.

“It’s still unlikely that it’s going to be immediate and remains data dependent,” said Brenda Kelly, chief market strategist at IG Markets, in emailed comments.

High hopes for Jackson Hole: Kelly and other strategists said not much will hold markets’ attention ahead of Friday in Jackson Hole, Wyo., where Yellen and European Central Bank President Mario Draghi are scheduled to speak.

“Markets are making hay while the sun shines—possibly in a delusional manner based on previous equity moves in the run-up and aftermath of the Jackson Hole symposium,” Kelly said. “Yellen, however, is not Bernanke, and she may offer some surprises.”

Other strategists are sounding at least slightly cautious in the short term following the S&P 500’s two-week uptrend.

“Despite hints by the FOMC that rate hikes may come sooner than widely anticipated, the S&P 500 appears to be on a mission to eclipse the 2,000 level before considering the consequences of an uncontrolled advance,” said Sam Stovall, an equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ, in emailed comments.

Individual stocks: Hewlett-Packard Co. HPQ, +5.35%  and Hormel Foods Corp. HRL, +4.30%  were the biggest winners in the S&P 500 after each company posted quarterly profit that topped expectations.

EBay Inc. EBAY, +4.66%  was another top performer in the S&P 500, gaining more than 4% in the wake of speculation it may spin off its PayPal business.

Shares of retailer Gap Inc. GPS, +0.16% edged higher in the lead up to quarterly earnings after the closing bell. What to look for

Dollar Tree Inc. DLTR, -1.31%  shares were down 1.3% after reporting quarterly results and as Family Dollar Stores Inc. FDO, -0.50%  reaffirmed its support for Dollar Tree’s.
