8/6/14 Wed. 4:06 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Barbara Kollmeyer says U.S. stocks ended Wednesday marginally higher, as investors remained cautious in the wake of heightened geopolitical risks and downbeat European economic news.
A lack of risk appetite globally pushed prices of safe-haven assets higher. U.S. Treasurys rallied and gold futures jumped 1.8% above $1,300 per troy ounce, while global equities fell.
The S&P 500 SPX +0.00%  flat at 1,920.23. The Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA +0.08%  gained 13.87 points, or 0.1%, to 16,443.34. The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP +0.05%  added 2.22 points to 4,355.05.
Exchange Traded Funds can be a low-cost, tax-efficient vehicle for investing in stocks. But they are not always the best option. Here are a few situations where buyers should beware.
Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial, said this market has rewarded investors who bought the dips over the past five years.
“August tends to be a weak month for stocks because of seasonality. Most people around the world are on holiday, which means lower volumes. In absence of economic and corporate news, geopolitical headlines will be driving the markets,” Krosby said.
In today’s sole economic news, the U.S. trade deficit shrank in June, largely because imports of petroleum fell to the lowest level since late 2010. Reaction to stronger-than-expected economic data over the past few weeks had been generally negative, as investors worry that accelerating growth may force the Federal Reserve to start raising rates sooner than currently anticipated.

Shares of Walgreen Co.WAG +0.90%  sank 14% after the drugstore chain issued 2016 guidance well below Wall Street guidance. The drugstore also said it will keep headquarters in the U.S., news that will disappoint a group of investors trying to persuade the company to relocate its headquarters to tax-friendly Switzerland.
Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp. /CTSH -.00%  shares plummeted 13% after the information-technology company cut its revenue guidance for the year and projected third-quarter revenue that missed analysts’ expectations.

8/5/14 Tuesday  4:09   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahumudova & Barbara Kollmeyer says U.S. stocks closed sharply lower on Tuesday following reports that Russia is building up its military presence on the border with Ukraine.
Fears that the Federal Reserve might raise interest rates sooner than expected in the wake of fresh signs that the economy is gaining strength lingered in the background.
The S&P 500 SPX -0.97%  closed 18.78 points, or 1%, lower at 1,920.21. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.84%  dropped 139.81 points, or 0.8%, to 16,429.47. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.71%  fell 31.05 points, or 0.7%, to 4,352.84.

The Financial Times reported that Russia has dramatically increased the number of troops and vehicles positioned on its eastern border with Ukraine during the past few days, reviving fears among investors that the conflict could escalate. Separately, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his government to prepare retaliatory measures against U.S. and European economic sanctions imposed on Russia.
Nichoalas Colas, market strategists at ConvergEx Group, a global brokerage company based in New York, said it was eerie to see investors start worrying about a possible full-blown war between Ukraine and Russia on the 100th anniversary of the start of the World War I.
“Over the past several months markets had shrugged off such a possibility and discounted a potential for a real war. The news that Russia might have its troops inside Ukraine instead of waging a proxy war caught a lot of investors flatfooted,” Colas said.
“If this is the beginning of a correction, we expect it to be a slow-motion one. People are just not making sudden moves,” he added.
Tuesday’s economic news showed U.S. service-sector companies expanded in July at the faster pace in nine years, according to survey of senior executives. Meanwhile, factory orders in June climbed to the highest level on record and topped estimates compiled by MarketWatch.

Walgreen Co. WAG -4.15%   fell 4.2% on reports of the drugstore chain’s intent to keep its headquarters in the U.S. after it takes over British pharmacy chain Alliance Boots, rather than move its domicile abroad to lower its tax bill.
Motorola Solutions Inc.MSI -4.24%   fell 4.2% after the networking-systems company reported a drop in second-quarter sales and guidance for the current period came in weaker than expected.
Groupon, Inc GRPN -17.53%  shares plunged 13% in after-hours session after reporting results.
In other markets, the Nikkei 225 JP:NIK -.00%  fell to its weakest closing level in more than a week, after the HSBC China services purchasing managers index came in at the lowest reading in the nearly nine-year history of the index. European stocks /XX:SXXP +0.29%  closed higher. September futures contracts for both crude oil CLU4 -0.89%  were lower and futures for goldGCU4 +0.02%  rose 0.1% after the selling took hold in equity markets. The dollar DXY +0.24%  held steady.
