Post No. 850 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 component's SEC filings as of January 10, 2011.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 11,891.93 up 68.23 points or 0.58% from Friday's close of 11,823.70. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 22 gained, Intel was unchanged and 7 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM $162 +2.79 1.75% 7,192,098 NYSE and percentage-wise was Exxon XOM $80.68 +1.69 2.14% 34,487,061 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Procter & Gamble PG $63.13 -1.07 1.67% 12,559,077 NYSE.
As of the open of the market Monday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.49 (year ago it was 16.30); the P/E estimate is 12.63 (year ago it was 12.99), and the dividend yield is 2.43 (last year it was 2.72). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,571.27 up 9.01 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,562.26. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.38 up $0.30 from Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $52.08. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.32 (HPQ/JPM). The lowest volume was 3M MMM $87.92 +0.48 0.55% 4,114,276 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $13.73 +0.13 0.96% 117,476,263 NYSE.
If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $900 ($157,140 -$156,240).
MarketWatch Monday 1/31/11 4:59 by Kate Gibson says US stocks rose Monday, helping lift the Dow to its best January in 14 years, as investors took upheaval in Egypt in stride and Exxon Mobil Corp.’s results blew past expectations. “Overall, given what is going on in Egypt, it’s rather encouraging the market is holding up as well as it is,” said David Kelly, chief market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds.
However, “we shouldn’t always assume the market reacts in a logical way to the daily news flow,” said Kelly. Recent data showed mutual-fund investors continuing to pull money out of bond funds and into equities in January, he noted. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,892, +68.23, +0.58%) closed up 68.23 points, or 0.6%, to 11,891.93, led by more than 2% gains in Alcoa Inc. (AA 16.57, +0.44, +2.73%) and Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM 80.68, +1.69, +2.14%) shares. On Friday, worries that increasingly violent protests in Egypt would spread to some of the region’s big oil-producing nations rattled investors. The Dow average made its biggest one-day drop since mid-November. For the month, the blue-chip average rose 2.7%, its first January gain in four years and its best January performance since 1997. “We can only hope that the January effect, in which the first month’s performance dictates the trend for the year, is in place for 2011,” noted Andrew Fitzpatrick, director of investments at Hinsdale Associates. Shares of Intel Corp. (INTC 21.46, 0.00, 0.00%) closed flat, shedding earlier losses, after the company said it would discontinue production of a computer chip found to have a design flaw, but raised its overall revenue forecast. The S&P 500 Index (SPX 1,286, +9.78, +0.77%) ended up 9.78 points, or 0.8%, at 1,286.12, with energy companies faring the best and consumer staples performing the worst. It rose 2.3% in January.
Shares of Exxon Mobil (XOM 80.68, +1.69, +2.14%) rose after the oil giant reported net income surged 53% to top $9 billion, and earnings per share of $1.85. Analysts expected EPS of $1.62. Massey Energy Co. (MEE 62.37, -0.49, -0.78%) fronted energy-sector gains on the S&P 500, its shares up 9.8% on a $7.1 billion buyout proposal by rival Alpha Natural Resources Inc. (ANR 53.71, -0.02, -0.04%).
The Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP 2,700, +13.19, +0.49%) added 13.19 points, or 0.5%, to 2,700.08. It rose 1.8% in January. For every stock falling Friday, more than two gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 1.2 billion shares traded.
The major stock indexes had pared gains after Intel shares were halted pending a news release. The technology heavyweight revealed a chip-design flaw that will cost the company about $300 million in lost revenue. Stocks, however, were bolstered by economic data. An index of manufacturing in the Midwest rose more than expected and U.S. consumer spending climbed in December. Supporting energy stocks, crude-oil futures finished at more than two-year highs above $92 a barrel. “The market appears to be doing fine relative to all the political upheaval that we’ve seen over the last week or two. Usually if people are scared out of their minds, there would be a flight to quality in U.S. government bonds,” said Fred Fraenkel, vice chairman of Beacon Trust Co.Read emerging-markets report on Egypt. “We’re in a watch-and-wait period to see how all these things work out in the near term. But long term, the aspect of countries in the Middle East wanting to be less autocratic and more democratic is good,” he added.

Post No. 849 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 component's SEC filings as of January 10, 2011.
A read of the print editions of Friday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data.
Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 11,989.83 up 4.3 points or 0.04% from Wednesday's close of 11,985.44. For the year the Dow is up 3.56%. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 18 gained, Disney and Intel were unchanged and 10 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was United Technologies UTX $82.59 +1.18 1.45% 4,402,185 NYSE and percentage-wise was GE $20.29 +0.37 1.86% 63,874,478 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Procter & Gamble PG $64.18 -1.93 2.92% 23,775,640 NYSE.
WSJ pC6 "Dow sings, misses at 12,000 close" by Kristina Peterson says the Dow fell short again of closing above 12000, as mixed economic data and corp earnings left the market struggling to find direction. Microsoft rose 9 cents after it unexpectedly released its rosy 2Q earnings well before the market closed. Earnings topped analysts' expectations. Procter & Gamble sank 1.93 after its fiscal 2Q profit slid 28% from a year earlier period that included a large gain from discontinued operations, as profit margins were narrowed by rising commodity costs. AT&T fell 60 cents hurt by a steep decline int he number of new customers signed to longer term service contract in 4Q. Earnings narrowly beat analysts' expectations, but rev came up short of forecasts. Caterpillar rose after its 4Q earnings soared, beating analysts' estimates as demand recovered from slumping levels a year earlier. Pfizer expected to compete an application to US regulators by the end of ths year for an experimental anticoagulant, apixaban, that could be a big seller so this boosted its partner in the profit, Bristol Myers. Pfizer also issued a profit forecast for '11 that fell short of Wall St. expectations, citing the effects of a product recall and higher costs associated with the health care overhaul. Caterpillar was charted under Good News and Procter & Gamble and AT&T were charted under Bad News.
Fin Times p28 "Caterpillar's soaring profits buck trend amid poor bellwether results" by Michael Stothard says soaring profit for Caterpillar lifted industrials but sentiment for US stocks was tempered as other US bellwethers such as Procter & Gamble and AT&T posted weaker results and there was a surprise jump in unemployment claims.
NYT pB7 "Wall St closes up a bit; 2 indexes near milestones" by Reuters says the Dow and the S&P 500 struggled to get past the 12000 mark but investors see more gains for firms that outperform their earnings as Microsoft surprised Wall St with better than expected profit.
USA Today p4B "Stocks maanged to close with slight gains" by Bloomberg says stocks swung between gains & losses as pending home sales and Qualcomm's forecast beat projections, offsetting Japan's credit downgrade and higher than estimated US jobless claims.
As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.80 down from Thursday's 14.90 (year ago it was 16.26); the P/E estimate is 12.59 unchanged from Thursday's 12.59 (year ago it was 13.30), and the dividend yield is 2.40 unchanged from Thursday's 2.40 (last year it was 2.71). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,584.21 up 0.59 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,583.62.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.81 up $0.02 from Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $52.79. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.92 (HPQ/JPM) down $0.03 from Wednesday's median closing price of $45.95. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $89.19 -0.38 0.42% 3,257,384 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $13.65 +0.10 0.74% 142,701,203 NYSE.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $59 ($158421 - $158,362).
MarketWatch Thursday 1/27/11 4:13 by Laura Mandaro says US stocks closed a topsy-turvy session with slight gains Thursday, with investors focused on a flood of earnings, some mixed news on jobless claims and pending home sales, and talk of an expected pullback from stocks' recent rally.
Post No. 847 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 component's SEC filings as of January 10, 2011.
A read of the print editions of Thursday's Wall St.
Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 11,985.44 up 8.25 points or 0.07% from Tuesday's close of 11,977.19. For the year the Dow is up 3.52%. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 13 gained, AT+T was unchanged and 16 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was DuPont DD $50.32 +1.28 2.61% 9,890,032 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing BA $70.01 -2.23 3.09% 12,551,636 NYSE.
WSJ pC5 "DJIA retakes 12000, then gives it back" by Jonathan Cheng says the Dow went over 12000 for the first time in almost 3 years but closed just short of it as investors digested Pres Obama's State of the Union address and the Fed Res' unanimous decision to stay the course on supporting the economy. The Dow was restrained by disappointing earnings from Boeing. Leading on the upside was DuPont.
Fin Times p26 "House sales figures help Dow to 12,000 as equities receive a tonic" by Michael Stothard saysthe wider markets ticked up as Pres Obama called for corp tax reductions in exchange for an end to industry specific tax breaks.
NYT pB1 "Dow flirts with 12000, then fades" by Chris Hauser says the Dow rose above 12000 but then dropped back at the close.
USA Today p4B "Dow briefly climbs back above 12,000" by Bloomberg says stocks went above 12000 for the first time since June '08 after the Fed Res maintained stimulus measures & new home sales topped projections.
As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.90 up from Wednesday's 14.89 (year ago it was 16.56); the P/E estimate is 12.59 unchanged from Wednesday's 12.59 (year ago it was 13.30), and the dividend yield is 2.40 unchanged from Wednesday's 2.40 (last year it was 2.67). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,583.62 up 1.08 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,582.54.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.79 up $0.04 from Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $52.75. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.95 (HPQ/JPM) down $0.02 from Tuesday's median closing price of $45.97. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $89.57 +1.07 1.21% 4,041,210 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $13.565 -0.065 0.48% 138,107,900 NYSE.
If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made 108 ($158,362 -$158,254).

This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. Post No. 846 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 component's SEC filings as of January 10, 2011.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 11,985.44 up 8.25 points or 0.07% from Tuesday's close of 11,977.19.
As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.89 down from Tuesday's 14.95 (year ago it was 16.73); the P/E estimate is 12.59 unchanged from Tuesday's 12.59 (year ago it was 13.30), and the dividend yield is 2.40 unchanged from Tuesday's 2.40 (last year it was 2.69).
MarketWatch Wednesday 1/26/11 4:11 by Laura Mandaro says US stocks closed mildly higher Wednesday, after a report of strong new-home sales offset some disappointing earnings reports from bellwethers such as Boeing Co. (BA 70.02, +0.04, +0.06%) . A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data.
Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 11,977.19 down 3.33 points or 0.03% from Monday's close of 11,980.52. For the year the Dow is up 3.45%. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 15 gained and 15 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM $161.44 +1.81 1.13% 8,226,759 NYSE and percentage-wise was Walmart WMT $57.26 +1.21 2.16% 20,444,470 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was 3M MMM $88.5 -1.82 2.02% 7,405,070 NYSE and percentage-wise was American Express AXP $44.8 -0.99 2.16% 15,718,443 NYSE.
WSJ pC3 "AmEx leads Dow lower" by Kristina Peterson says blue chips ended with a narrow loss afater a late day rebound ahead of marquee political and economic events - the Pres's State of the Union address & the results of the Fed Res' policy setting meeting. Traders said a spate of unusually large orders for IBM briefly boosted the Dow. Because IBM has such a large weighting in the Dow, its move wold have accounted for about 27 points. Leading the Dow's declines, American Express shed 99 cents to close to $44.80. 3M is charted under Bad News saying profit slipped 0.7% as margins were narrowed by rising material costs and weakening sales in its health care and graphics business. Also American Express was charted under Bad News as Net soared 48% as it said customers spending increased.
Fin Times p26 "J&J falls on weak profits & downbeat outlook" by Michael Stothard says Johnson & Johnson and other weak earnings reports caused the market to go down but the wider markets were flat after mixed economic data. JNJ's CEO William Weldon issued a downbeat '11 forecast of $4.80 to $.90 a share less than 4.97 projected by analysts. American Express reported disappointing 4Q earnings.
USA Today p4B "Markets end flat after earlier losses" by Bloomberg says US stocks erased losses in a late session rebound that sent the S&P 500 higher for a 3rd day as investors speculated Pres Obama will announce further plans to stimulate the economy.
NYT pB7 "Shares stall as investors await policy news" by Christine Hauser says shares on Wall St ended the day little changed as investors held back in anticipation of economic and policy developments.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,582.54 down 0.44 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,582.98. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.75 down $0.02 from Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $52.77. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.97 (HPQ/JPM) down $0.68 from Monday's median closing price of $46.67. The lowest volume was United Technologies UTX $81.73 +0.21 0.26% 4,456,782 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $13.63 -0.29 2.08% 302,172,221 NYSE.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $44 ($158,298 -$158,254).
MarketWatch Tuesday 1/25/11 4:16 by Nick Godt says US stocks overcame early disappointment over earnings and a drop in home prices to finish little changed on Tuesday, as investors awaited the Federal Reserve's statement on monetary policy on Wednesday. The broad S&P 500 index (SPX 1,291, +0.34, +0.03%) rose 0.34 points to 1,291.18, with the advance led by a 1% gain the telecom sector. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,977, -3.33, -0.03%) , however, fell 3.33 points to 11,977.19, weighed most by 2% drops in shares of 3M co.
