As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal was 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.91 (year ago it was 18.23); the P/E estimate is 13.55 unchanged from yesterday (year ago it was 13.75), and the dividend yield is 2.44 (last year it was 2.56). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,550.13 down 1.89 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,553.24. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. MarketWatch Thursday 1/13/11 5:11 by Kristina Peterson says U.S. stocks declined on Thursday, as materials shares lagged in the wake of disappointing economic data, but successful bond auctions in Spain and Italy helped shore up sentiment. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,732, -23.54, -0.20%) closed down 11731.90 points, or 0.20%, at 11731.90. Merck (MRK 34.69, -2.46, -6.62%) was the measure’s worst performer, taking 19 points off the Dow. The drug maker sank 6.6% after its researchers halted one of two major studies of its experimental anticlotting drug vorapaxar and made significant changes to the other, throwing into doubt the future of one of the most important medicines in its product pipeline. A just-released WSJ survey of leading economists indicates they've turned more optimistic about the outlook for the recovery, despite the dismal housing market. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,735, -2.04, -0.08%) edged down 2.04, or 0.07%, to 2735.29. The Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index (SPX 1,284, -2.20, -0.17%) fell 2.20, or 0.17%, to 1283.76.
Materials lagged as metals prices weakened following U.S. economic data that largely missed investors’ expectations. Alcoa (AA 15.75, -0.49, -3.02%) shed 3% and Newmont Mining (NEM 56.81, -0.98, -1.70%) fell 1.7%. In U.S. economic data, the Labor Department reported that the number of workers filing for initial jobless claims unexpectedly increased by 35,000 to 445,000 in the week ended Jan. 8. Economists polled by MarketWatch had expected them to fall to a seasonally adjusted 405,000.
However, investors noted that this week’s data could have been impacted by the recent snowstorms. “Claims are going in the right direction, they just aren’t going fast enough,” said Jerry Harris, president of asset management at Sterne Agee.
Separately, U.S. producer prices jumped in December, rising a seasonally adjusted 1.1% in December from November. However, stripping out volatile food and energy items, producer prices increased 0.2%. Economists polled by Dow Jones Newswires were expecting a 0.8% increase in the overall figure. The core index of producer prices came in line with forecasts. The U.S. trade deficit unexpectedly narrowed for the third straight month in November, though the gap with China rebounded.
After the bell, Intel (INTC 21.80, +0.51, +2.40%) reported a 48% jump in fourth-quarter profit on demand for server processors. Successful auctions of euro-zone debt continued to calm some of investors’ worries over the precarious state of the region’s fiscal stability. The Spanish government sold 3 billion euros ($3.9 billion) in five-year bonds at yields below those in the secondary market, though its borrowing costs rose compared to a November auction. Italy also successfully conducted a bond sale. Both the Bank of England and the European Central Bank left benchmark interest rates unchanged. ECB president Jean-Claude Trichet said that the inflationary pressures in the euro area appeared to be short term. The dollar weakened against both the euro and the yen. The euro (USDEUR 0.7707, -0.0013, -0.1684%) hit a one-week high against the dollar, trading recently at $1.3354, up from $1.3133 late Wednesday in New York. The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY 79.18, -0.85, -1.07%) , which represents the currency against a basket of others, sank 1.1%.
Demand for Treasurys rose, pushing yield on the 10-year note down to 3.30%. Crude-oil prices (CLG11 91.01, -0.39, -0.43%) settled below $92 a barrel, while gold futures (GCG11 1,373, -14.40, -1.04%) declined. Among stocks in focus, Marathon Oil (MR 25.67, -1.01, -3.79%) rallied 6% after the company’s board approved advancing plans to spin off the company’s refining and sales operations. The split will see the creation of Marathon Petroleum Corp., expected to be the fifth largest U.S. refiner. Printed circuit board maker TTM Technologies (TTMI 17.75, +0.01, +0.06%) gained 21% after raising its fourth-quarter forecast, saying an increase in demand for its high technology products boosted its prospects.
Whole Foods Market (WFMI 52.25, -0.06, -0.12%) rose 4.6% after Jefferies reiterated a buy rating for the upscale grocer and boosted its price target to $60 from $47. Jefferies said its post-holiday checks were “quite strong.”

MarketWatch Wednesday 1/12/11 4:33 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks rose for a second day Wednesday, after Portugal was successful in raising money, easing concerns about sovereign debt woes in Europe. The financial sector also received a lift after JPMorgan Chase’s (JPM 44.72, +0.01, +0.02%) chief executive suggested the bank might pay a yearly dividend of $1 and an analyst recommended buying shares of large U.S. banks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,755, +83.56, +0.72%) rose 83.56 points, or 0.7%, to 11,755.44, with JP Morgan leading the advance, up 2.6%, followed by Bank of America Corp. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (SPX 1,286, +11.48, +0.90%) gained 11.48 points, or 0.9%, to 1,285.96, with financial companies the best performers among its 10 major industry groups, which were all higher. Up for a third consecutive session, the Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP 2,737, +20.50, +0.76%) climbed 20.50 points, or 0.8%, to 2,737.33. The advance in U.S. stocks followed a rally in European stocks, with banks leading the gains after Portugal’s sale of $1.62 billion in debt drew healthy demand. Investors also reacted to other signs pointing to more stable financial conditions in Europe. On Tuesday, Japan vowed to follow China in buying European government bonds. Should Europe’s debt troubles spread to Spain or Italy, then “all of a sudden all the money that has been raised runs out, and at that point, those larger economic contributors would start to create cracks in the financial stability in the European community,” said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott. Therefore, the purchases of European debt by China and Japan, two of the region’s trading partners “helps a lot in the sense the [European Central Bank] doesn’t have to go it alone,” he said. Stocks lightly pared gains after the Federal Reserve released its report on economic conditions in the 12 Fed districts. The report showed evidence the economy was expanding moderately through the end of last year, though real estate and banking continued to weigh on activity. In New York, advancers outpaced decliners by nearly 3 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume reached 963.5 million shares. Among the session’s standouts, shares of ITT Corp. (ITT 61.28, -0.22, -0.36%) surged 16.5% after the diversified manufacturer said it would split into three publicly traded companies.
Before Wall Street’s opening bell, the government reported U.S. import prices rose in December on higher energy costs. On Tuesday, both the Dow industrials and the S&P 500 snapped a three-session losing streak.
