The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 11,977.19 down 3.33 points or 0.03% from Monday's close of 11,980.52. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 15 gained and 15 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM $161.44 +1.81 1.13% 8,226,759 NYSE and percentage-wise was Walmart WMT $57.26 +1.21 2.16% 20,444,470 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was 3M MMM $88.5 -1.82 2.02% 7,405,070 NYSE and percentage-wise was American Express AXP $44.8 -0.99 2.16% 15,718,443 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.95 up from Monday's 14.82 (year ago it was 16.96); the P/E estimate is 12.59 unchanged from Monday's 12.59 (year ago it was 13.30), and the dividend yield is 2.40 down from Friday's 2.42 (last year it was 2.69). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,582.54 down 0.44 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,582.98. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.75 down $0.02 from Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $52.77. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.97 (HPQ/JPM) down $0.68 from Monday's median closing price of $46.67. The lowest volume was United Technologies UTX $81.73 +0.21 0.26% 4,456,782 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $13.63 -0.29 2.08% 302,172,221 NYSE.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $44 ($158,298 -$158,254).

MarketWatch Tuesday 1/25/11 4:16 by Nick Godt says US stocks overcame early disappointment over earnings and a drop in home prices to finish little changed on Tuesday, as investors awaited the Federal Reserve's statement on monetary policy on Wednesday. The broad S&P 500 index (SPX 1,291, +0.34, +0.03%) rose 0.34 points to 1,291.18, with the advance led by a 1% gain the telecom sector. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,977, -3.33, -0.03%) , however, fell 3.33 points to 11,977.19, weighed most by 2% drops in shares of 3M co. (MMM 88.50, -1.82, -2.02%) and American Express (AXP 44.58, -0.22, -0.49%) after the company's earnings. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,719, +1.70, +0.06%) rose 1.70 points, or 0.1%, to 2,719.25.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,582.98 up 14.79 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,568.19. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

MarketWatch Monday 1/24/11 4:44 by Kate Gibson says US stocks shot higher Monday, bringing the Dow Jones Industrial Average within close reach of 12,000 for the first time since mid-2008, as deal-making and share buybacks heightened confidence. The Dow (DJIA 11,981, +108.68, +0.92%) closed up 108.68 points, or 0.9%, at 11,980.52. Of its 30 components, 24 advanced, led by a 4.1% gain in the shares of aluminum producer Alcoa Inc. (AA 16.39, -0.04, -0.24%) . It was the blue-chip index’s first triple-digit gain of the year. Moscow Producers of raw materials were bolstered after Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. (SSCC 35.18, +0.18, +0.51%) , which is not in the Dow, agreed to be acquired for $3.5 billion. Technology shares advanced after Dow-component Intel Corp. (INTC 21.23, -0.01, -0.05%) added $10 billion to its stock-repurchase plan. Intel shares rose 2%. McDonald’s (MCD 75.30, -0.08, -0.11%) , also part of the Dow, reported its net income rose 2% in the fourth quarter; its shares edged up 0.5% after initial losses. The Dow has not hit or risen above 12,000 since June 2008. It first closed above 12,000 on Oct. 19, 2006.The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (SPX 1,291, +7.49, +0.58%) added 7.49 points, or 0.6%, to 1,290.84, with technology companies and natural-resource stocks pacing the gains. Last week, the Dow tallied an eighth straight week of gains while the S&P 500 halted a seven-week climb. 118590 “The winning streak for the S&P has come to an end, but that doesn’t mean we’re about to see a correction that starts with a straight line down,” said Marc Pado, U.S. market strategist at Cantor Fitzgerald. “This can be a very constructive correction, unwinding the overbought condition but not undermine the bigger picture,” Pado added. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,718, +28.01, +1.04%) climbed 28.01 points, or 1.04%, to 2,717.55. The technology-laden index on Friday retreated as investors mulled the surprise announcement by Google Inc. For every stock falling, nearly three gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where nearly 962 million shares had traded. That’s 105% of the 30-day average volume. Halliburton Co.’s (HAL 39.60, +0.05, +0.13%) shares gained 0.9% after the oil-services company tallied a fourth-quarter profit that topped expectations. After Monday’s close, American Express Co. (AXP 45.16, -0.63, -1.38%) shares fell 0.9% after the credit-card issuer, a Dow component, reported fourth-quarter results. CSX Corp. (CSX 69.15, +1.44, +2.13%) shares rose 2.6% higher in late trading after reporting a 42% surge in profit. Also after the bell, Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN 33.95, -0.70, -2.02%) reported fourth-quarter net income of $942 million, or 78 cents a share, compared with a profit of $655 million, or 52 cents a share, for the year-earlier period.
