The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 11,755.44 up 83.56 points or 0.72% from Tuesday's close of 11,671.88. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 24 gained and 6 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM $149.1 1.82 +1.24% 3,969,337 NYSE and percentage-wise was JPMorgan JPM $44.71 +1.11 2.55% 39,361,037 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Caterpillar CAT $93.49 -0.46 0.49% 5,659,236 NYSE and percentage-wise was Disney DIS $39.17 -0.23 0.58% 9,546,991 NYSE.
As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal was 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.84 (year ago it was 18.50); the P/E estimate is 13.55 (year ago it was 13.75), and the dividend yield is 2.47 (last year it was 2.56). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,553.24 up 11.04 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,542.20. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.77 up $0.36 from Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $51.41. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.32 (HPQ/AXP) up $0.08 from Tuesday's median closing price of $45.24. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $88.66 +0.92 1.05% 2,725,949 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $14.99 +0.30 2.04% 198,599,040 NYSE.
If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,104 ($155,324 - $154,220).
MarketWatch Wednesday 1/12/11 4:33 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks rose for a second day Wednesday, after Portugal was successful in raising money, easing concerns about sovereign debt woes in Europe. The financial sector also received a lift after JPMorgan Chase’s (JPM 44.72, +0.01, +0.02%) chief executive suggested the bank might pay a yearly dividend of $1 and an analyst recommended buying shares of large U.S. banks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,755, +83.56, +0.72%) rose 83.56 points, or 0.7%, to 11,755.44, with JP Morgan leading the advance, up 2.6%, followed by Bank of America Corp. (BAC 15.04, +0.05, +0.33%), up 2%.
The banking sector also got a boost from Wells Fargo’s recommendation to buy shares of large U.S. banks. Read more on financial stocks. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (SPX 1,286, +11.48, +0.90%) gained 11.48 points, or 0.9%, to 1,285.96, with financial companies the best performers among its 10 major industry groups, which were all higher. Up for a third consecutive session, the Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP 2,737, +20.50, +0.76%) climbed 20.50 points, or 0.8%, to 2,737.33. The advance in U.S. stocks followed a rally in European stocks, with banks leading the gains after Portugal’s sale of $1.62 billion in debt drew healthy demand. Investors also reacted to other signs pointing to more stable financial conditions in Europe. On Tuesday, Japan vowed to follow China in buying European government bonds. Should Europe’s debt troubles spread to Spain or Italy, then “all of a sudden all the money that has been raised runs out, and at that point, those larger economic contributors would start to create cracks in the financial stability in the European community,” said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott.
Therefore, the purchases of European debt by China and Japan, two of the region’s trading partners “helps a lot in the sense the [European Central Bank] doesn’t have to go it alone,” he said. Stocks lightly pared gains after the Federal Reserve released its report on economic conditions in the 12 Fed districts. The report showed evidence the economy was expanding moderately through the end of last year, though real estate and banking continued to weigh on activity. In New York, advancers outpaced decliners by nearly 3 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume reached 963.5 million shares. Among the session’s standouts, shares of ITT Corp. (ITT 61.28, -0.22, -0.36%) surged 16.5% after the diversified manufacturer said it would split into three publicly traded companies.
Before Wall Street’s opening bell, the government reported U.S. import prices rose in December on higher energy costs. On Tuesday, both the Dow industrials and the S&P 500 snapped a three-session losing streak.

MarketWatch Tuesday 1/11/11 4:34 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks ended modestly higher Tuesday on earnings-related optimism and after Japan joined China in saying it plans to buy bonds issued by Europe’s financial aid fund. “We’re seeing modest improvement on Japan’s willingness to buy European debt. That’s good news, as somebody has got to buy it,” said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank. “Near term, there was a lot of optimism going into this week and that may have been cause for things to have been overbought.” The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,672, +34.43, +0.30%) ended up 34.43 points, or 0.3%, at 11,671.88. Blue-chip gains were led by a 2% advance in shares of Bank of America Corp. (BAC 14.71, +0.03, +0.17%) and a 1.7% advance in shares of Intel Corp. (INTC 21.08, +0.03, +0.14%). The biggest daily losers among the blue chips were Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ 35.17, -0.19, -0.54%) and AT&T Inc. (T 27.95, +0.04, +0.14%) . Verizon Wireless made its anticipated announcement that it would begin selling a version of the iPhone 4 next month. Since being introduced in 2007, Apple Inc.’s (AAPL 341.84, +0.20, +0.06%) phone has only been available through AT&T’s network in the United States. “Sprint Nextel is the biggest loser; maybe it would be victimized on two of its competitors having the iPhone,” said Harris Bank’s Ablin in contrasting its performance to others in the sector. The S&P 500 Index (SPX 1,274, +4.73, +0.37%) gained 4.73 points, or 0.4%, to 1,274.48, with energy and materials gaining the most among its 10 industry groups and telecommunications faring the worst. The Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP 2,717, +9.03, +0.33%) advanced 9.03 points, or 0.3%, to 2,716.83. For every three stocks rising, two fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 944 million shares traded. On Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.3% to its lowest level so far this year. Aluminum giant and Dow component Alcoa Inc. (AA 16.29, -0.04, -0.25%) late Monday reported fourth-quarter earnings that topped Wall Street’s expectations and offered an upbeat forecast. Read more about Alcoa’s results. Separately, retailers Sears Holdings Corp. (SHLD 74.51, -0.52, -0.69%) and Tiffany & Co. (TIF 60.56, -0.38, -0.62%) both projected that earnings would beat analysts’ forecasts. See story on Sears. “The earnings numbers that are out are OK, but it’s hard to draw major conclusions from the first handful of earnings reports. I’d like to see 150 rather than just the first four or five,” said Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners. Shares of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD 8.38, +0.02, +0.24%) slumped after the chip maker late Monday said that its chief executive has resigned, taking the industry by surprise. Read more about the move at AMD. European equities posted gains Tuesday, helped by Japan’s announcement that it will buy debt issued by the European Financial Stability Facility. The news eased near-term concerns over the euro-zone debt crisis, though Portugal faces a key test Wednesday when it will hold a government bond auction. After years of trailing their small and midsize brethren, the stocks of large companies look relatively inexpensive and ready to race ahead. The Stoxx Europe 600 Index (ST:STOXX600 281.98, +3.50, +1.26%) gained 1.3% and Portugal’s PSI 20 advanced 2.4%. In Asia, most markets ended higher, with the Hang Seng index (HK:HANGSENG 23,760, +233.08, +0.99%) in Hong Kong rising 1%. The dollar index (DXY 80.84, -0.04, -0.05%), used by Intercontinental Exchange to track the U.S. currency against those of half a dozen trading partners, held steady at 80.825. The Verizon model will not be the same iPhone 4 that is sold by AT&T, which until now has had the exclusive rights to sell the iPhone in the US. The insides are quite different as Apple had to creae a new version because Verizon's network uses a different technology, the CDMA technology which cannot transmit voice & data simultaneously so Verizon iPhone users won't be able to look up directions or check email while on a call as athey can with AT&T. Existing Verizon customers can preorder the phone on Feb 3 and others on Feb 10. It will have 16 gigabytes of storage and cost $199 with a 2 year contract while the 32 gigabyte version would cost $299, the same as AT&T. If it ca handle the load, Verizon stands to gain millions of new wireless subscribers. Apple sold 15 million ihHones for AT&T last year.
