The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 12,058.02 down 168.32 points or 1.38% from Monday's close of 12,226.34. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 2 gained, Cisco was unchanged and 27 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage wise was Coke KO $64.91 +0.99 1.55% 15,510,950 NYSE. As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.86 up from Monday's 14.74 (year ago it was 16.22); the P/E estimate is 12.67 down from Monday's 12.87 (year ago it was 13.21), and the dividend yield is 2.38 down from Monday's 2.40 (last year it was 2.61). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,593.22 down 21.94 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,615.46. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.11 down $0.74 from Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $53.85. If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,194 ($161,546 - $159,322).
MarketWatch Tuesday 3/1/11 4:32 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks closed lower Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average posting its biggest point drop in a week, as oil topped $100 a barrel in electronic trading and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said rising energy prices could dent the recovery. Amateur video shows violent protests in the Omani industrial town of Sohar, where police used tear gas and fired rubber bullets at stone-throwing demonstrators. “Sustained rises in the prices of oil or other commodities would represent a threat both to economic growth and to overall price stability,” Bernanke told the Senate Banking Committee. But Bernanke said rising commodity prices did not yet pose a significant threat to the broader economy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 12,058, -168.40, -1.38%) fell 168.32 points, or 1.4%, to close at 12,058.02, with 27 of its 30 components in the red. The point decline was the worst the Dow has seen since Feb. 22. After finishing the month of February with a 3.2% gain, the S&P 500 Index (SPX 1,325, -20.89, -1.55%) on Tuesday declined 20.89 points to finish at 1,306.33, with industrials fronting declines that stretched to include all of its 10 major industry groups. Shares of Fifth Third Bancorp (FITB 13.87, -0.08, -0.57%) were among the biggest decliners in the S&P’s financials, off 4.5% after the bank-holding company said in a filing that U.S. regulators were probing its accounting and reporting of commercial loans. The Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP 2,737, -44.86, -1.61%) fell 44.86 points, or 1.6%, to close at 2,737.41. On the New York Mercantile Exchange, oil bounced back from a one-week low on worry that ongoing unrest in the Middle East and North Africa might interrupt supplies.
The crude-oil futures contract for April delivery (CLJ11 100.58, +3.61, +3.72%) rose $2.66 to close at $99.63 a barrel. Oil prices climbed past $100 in electronic trading shortly before the New York Stock Exchange closed. “I don’t think the economy is strong enough to handle gas at the pump at $4 a gallon, which is where we’re heading,” said Jay Suskind, senior vice president at Duncan-Williams. “The political unrest and impact on the energy sector is going to keep a lid on this market,” Suskind added. Tuesday’s economic reports had U.S. manufacturing in February expanding at its most rapid pace since mid-2004, illustrating heightened demand for factory goods. Construction spending fell 0.7% in January. On Monday, U.S. equities finished a strong February, the third consecutive month higher for the three benchmark averages.
