WSJ pC1 "Dow below 12000 on Mideast worries" by Tom Lauricella says fin'l markets around the globe were shaken by escalating turmoil in the Mid East, fresh remnders that Europe's debt crisis remains unresolved & surprisingly downbeat economic news out of China.

But HP shares weer off 1.4% to their lowest level of the year. Chevron fell 3% and Exxon fell 3.6%. Materials & industrials were hit hard as Caterpillar fell 3.9% & Alcoa lost 3.1%.

NYT pB1 "Disappointing economic reports push shares down across globe" by Christine Hauser says worries about oil supply & downbeat economic reports from 3 continents sent stocks worldwide sharply lower providing a reminder of the fragile nature of the global recovery.

USA Today p4B "Economic reports push Dow under 12000" by Bloomberg says stocks tumbled giving the Dow its biggest drop since Aug, as increases in jobless claims & the trade deficit & a slowdown in China's export growth spurred concern the economy may falter.

As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.56 down from Thursday's 14.84 (year ago it was 16.54); the P/E estimate is 12.79 unchanged from Thursday's 12.79 (year ago it was 13.45), and the dividend yield is 2.43 up from Thursday's 2.38 (last year it was 2.57). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,583.52 down 30.19 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,613.71. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.78 down $1.01 from Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $53.79. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.77 (JPM/AXP) down 1.03 from Wednesday's median closing price of $45.80. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $58.52 -0.88 1.48% 3,621,951 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $14.26 -0.33 2.26% 154,135,796 NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $3,019 ($161,371 - $158,352).

MarketWatch Thursday 3/10/11 4:36 by Brendan Conway says US stocks closed with broad, steep losses Thursday after rumblings of unrest in Saudi Arabia compounded economic worries abroad and in the U.S. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,985, -228.48, -1.87%) closed under 12,000 for the first time since Jan. 31, falling 228.48 points, or 1.9%, to 11,984.61. Pressure on the major indexes intensified late in the day with reports that Saudi Arabian police fired rubber bullets to disperse about 200 Shiite protesters in the eastern town of Qatif, injuring at least three. Major indexes had already been lower after a downgrade of Spain’s government debt, worry about trade in China and a disappointing read on U.S. employment. One day ahead of an expected “day of rage” by protesters in Saudi Arabia, the reaction to the gunfire reports illustrated investors’ sensitivity to signs of unrest in the oil-rich kingdom. “Saudi Arabia is the most important component for oil exports,” said Karl Mills, chief investment officer at Jurika Mills & Kiefer. Mills cautioned that the country is in a different situation than in Libya, but turmoil there could “cause some fear and panic in the markets.” Caterpillar, Inc. (CAT 98.36, -0.03, -0.03%) shares led the Dow lower, falling 3.9%. Energy stocks were also weak as Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM 81.41, +0.03, +0.04%) fell 3.6%. All of the Dow’s components were in the red except for McDonald’s Corp.(MCD 76.64, -0.04, -0.05%), which rose 1.2%. It was the biggest point and percentage drop for the Dow since Aug. 11. The Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index (SPX 1,295, -24.91, -1.89%) retreated 24.91 points, or 1.9%, to 1,295.11 as its energy and materials components slumped. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,701, -50.70, -1.84%) fell 50.70 points, or 1.8%, to 2,701.02. Before the Saudi reports, stocks were lower as Moody’s Investor Service downgraded Spanish debt and China reported the slowest export growth since 2009 in February compared with the year-ago period. The market also got a disappointing read on the state of employment in the U.S. The Labor Department reported initial claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose for the week ended March 5. Separately, the Commerce Department said the trade deficit hit its highest level in seven months. “It’s really been the headlines from the Middle East that continue to dominate market sentiment,” said Joseph Tanious, market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds, overshadowing the past few months’ stronger U.S. economic data and other positives in investors’ focus. Among stocks in focus, General Motors Co. (GM 31.42, -0.83, -2.57%) fell 2.6% after the auto maker said Chief Financial Officer Chris Liddell will leave the company early next month. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR 61.71, +18.07, +41.41%) soared 41% after the company and Starbucks Corp. (SBUX 37.60, -0.37, -0.97%) announced a partnership for the sale of Starbucks and Tazo-tea-branded K-Cup portion packs for use in Green Mountain’s Keurig Single-Cup brewing system. Starbucks rose 10%. Human Genome Sciences Inc. (HGSI 28.92, -0.11, -0.38%) rose 13% after the Food and Drug Administration approved a lupus drug that will be the first new treatment for the autoimmune disease in more than 50 years. H&R Block Inc. (HRB 15.84, +0.65, +4.28%) swung to a fiscal third-quarter loss. The nation’s biggest tax preparer said an “industry-wide slow start to tax season” hurt revenue, but shares rose 4.3% as the company said total tax returns prepared rose 6% as of Feb. 28 and total online returns rose more than 30%. Jackson Hewitt Tax Services Inc. (JTX 0.74, -0.02, -2.62%) shares plunged 41%. Earnings per share in the company’s third quarter were lower than expected. Coldwater Creek Inc.’s (CWTR 2.61, -0.30, -10.31%) stock fell 10%. Losses at the retailer grew in the fiscal fourth quarter as sales fell more than expected.
