Post No. 939 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of March 21, 2011.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 12,197.88 down 22.71 points or 0.19% from Friday's close of 12220.59. Of the 30 Dow components 9 gained, GE was unchanged and 20 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was AT&T T $29.36 +0.51 1.77% 50,491,297 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Home Depot HD $36.65 -0.77 2.06% 8,588,763 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Monday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.85 (year ago it was 16.92); the P/E estimate is 12.63 (year ago it was 13.85), and the dividend yield is 2.39 (last year it was 2.51). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,611.70 down 3 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,614.70. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.72 up 0.10 cents from Friday's average closing price of 53.82. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.84 (JPM/AXP) up 0.12 from Friday's median closing price of $45.72. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $92.12 -0.15 0.16% 2,414,605. NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $13.37 +0.03 0.22% 78,560,928 NYSE.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $300 ($161,470 - $161,170).

MarketWatch Monday 3/28/11 5:01 by Kate Gibson says a three-day advance for U.S. stocks petered out in the final minutes of Monday’s trading session, as falling retail stocks and more caution after the recent rally offset initial enthusiasm over consumer spending data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 12,198, -22.71, -0.19%) ended down 22.71 points, or 0.2%, at 12,197.88, its first down day in four. Last week it rose 3.1%, its biggest weekly advance since July. Export-led U.S. economy strainedRecent events in Japan and the Middle East have weighed on the U.S. economy, which typically thrives on exports. “After the incredible move we had last week, there’s some profit-taking,” said Dave Rovelli, manager of equity trading at Canaccord Genuity. Home Depot Inc. (HD 37.14, +0.49, +1.34%) shares led losses among 20 of the Dow’s 30 components, with a decline of 2.1%. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (SPX 1,310, -3.61, -0.27%) also turned lower in the final minutes of the trading session, ending down 3.61 points, or 0.3%, at 1,310.19. “A partial pullback to 1,275 to 1,300 on the S&P 500 cannot be ruled out because the recent rally has occurred due to more of a decline in selling pressure rather than enthusiastic buying,” noted Jeffrey Saut, a strategist at Raymond James & Associates. Stocks lost ground late in the session. Consumer discretionary stocks led the benchmark lower, dropping 1.1%. Marriott International Inc. (MAR 35.71, +0.41, +1.16%) shares were the worst hit, falling 6.3% after the hotel and resort operator guided analysts to the low end of a forecast for revenue per available room. Shares of rivals Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. (HOT 55.92, +0.55, +0.99%) lost 5.7%, while Wyndham Worldwide Corp. (WYN 30.48, +0.17, +0.54%) fell 4.8%. Read more on Marriott's outlook, stock selloff. The S&P 500’s telecom sector was the sole gainer, rising 1.4% after Robert W. Baird upgraded AT&T Inc. (T 29.44, +0.08, +0.27%) and Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ 37.75, +0.46, +1.23%) , saying both would benefit from less competition, provided AT&T’s deal for T-Mobile USA is completed. Read more on telecom stocks. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,731, -12.38, -0.45%) ended down 12.38 points, or 0.5%, to 2,730.68.
Shares of eBay Inc. (EBAY 30.44, +0.10, +0.33%) dropped 4.3% after the online auctioneer said it would pay $2.4 billion, or $29.25 a share, for GSI Commerce Inc. (GSIC 29.17, -0.03, -0.10%) , a provider of e-commerce and marketing services. GSI surged 51% to $29.20. Among economic data released Monday, personal consumer spending increased 0.7% last month, slightly stronger than the 0.6% gain expected by economists surveyed by MarketWatch. Read more about income, spending data. Decliners outpaced advancers by nearly 9 to 6 on the New York Stock Exchange where 784 million shares traded hands. That’s just 73% of the 30-day average volume, according to FactSet. Composite volume topped 3.3 billion.
For most of the session, stocks looked to build on the prior week’s gains, with international events still in focus. Japan continued its efforts to bring a crippled nuclear reactor under control after workers found new pools of radioactive water leaking from the complex northeast of Tokyo. A destructive earthquake and tsunami on March 11, and ensuing fears about radiation leaks, had battered stocks mid-month. While global issues could make for “a bumpy ride over the next few months, for investors with a long-term viewpoint, the likelihood remains that the U.S. and global expansion will continue, gradually pushing both interest rates and equity prices higher,” said David Kelly, chief market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds. Oil prices slipped after Libyan rebels reclaimed oil ports and vowed to restart exports, with benchmark crude (CLK11 103.79, -0.19, -0.18%) off $1.42 to end at $103.98 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Treasury prices fell, with the 5-year note (UST5YR 2.18, +0.03, +1.16%) sliding for an eighth day in the longest stretch of losses since before the collapse of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. in 2008. Shares making notable moves included Cal-Maine Foods Inc. (CALM 29.97, +2.15, +7.73%) , up 7.7% after the nation’s biggest egg producer reported third-quarter results that beat Wall Street’s expectations.
