Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 11,774.49 up 161.29 points or 1.39% from Wednesday's close of 11,613.3. For the year the Dow is up 1.70%. Of the 30 Dow 25 gained, Walmart was unchanged and 4 declined. WSJ pC6 "Blue chips rack up first gain of week" by Kristina Peterson says US stocks closed out their first day of gains this week as rising crude oil prices boosted energy firms & efforts to tame the damaged nuclear power complex in Japan eased some fears over the crisis.

Fin Times p24 "Upbeat figures restore calm to industrial & commodity shares" by Michael Stothard says industrial & commodity stocks led a rebound on Wall St following strong manufacturing data & a sense that the sharp sell off in the previous session had been overdone.

NYT pB5 "Shares rally as panic over Japan eases" by David Segal says stocks staged a broad relief rally as panic about the nuclear crisis in Japan seemed to abate temporarily & markets were reassured by the prospect of intervention by the Group of 7 industrialzied nations.

USA Today p6B "Markets swing back into gain mode" by Bloomberg says stocks rallied Thurs breaking a 3 day losing streak, amid investor speculation that Japan will contain a nuclear crisis & as FedEx's profit forecast beat estimates.

As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.31 up from Thursday's 14.11 (year ago it was 16.81); the P/E estimate is 12.42 unchanged from Thursday's 12.42 (year ago it was 13.56), and the dividend yield is 2.48 up from Thursday's 2.51 (last year it was 2.53). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,555.77 up 20.31 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,534.46. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.86 up $0.71 from Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $51.15. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $43.97 (JPM/AXP) up 0.87 from Wednesday's median closing price of $43.10. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $88.77 +1.22 1.39% 3,210,114 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $13.97 +0.28 2.05% 120,402,149 NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $2,031 ($154,577 - $153,446).

MarketWatch Thursday 3/17/11 4:13 by Laura Mandaro says US stocks made a broad rebound Thursday, quitting a three-day losing streak, as investors turned their attention from Japan's efforts to quell a nuclear crisis to an optimistic outlook issued by FedEx Corp. (FDX 87.89, +2.61, +3.06%) and U.S. regional manufacturing data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,775, +161.29, +1.39%) ended up 161.29 points, or 1.4%, at 11,774.59, with all but four of 30 components posting gains. The S&P 500 (SPX 1,274, +16.84, +1.34%) added 16.84 points, or 1.3%, to 1,273.72, led by a 3.1% gain in energy stocks. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,636, +19.23, +0.74%) gained 19.23 points, or 0.7%, to 2,636.05. For the year, the Nasdaq is still lower.
