4/30/12 Mon. pm Dow Closes at 13,213.63 down 14.68 or 0.11%

 The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 13,213.6 down 14.68 or 0.11% from Friday's close of 13,228.31.  Of the 30 Dow components 15 gained, 3M was unchanged and 14 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise wasMerck. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar.


As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.81 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 1475 (year ago it was 14.95); Monday's P/E estimate is 12.42 unchanged from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.32 (year ago it was 12.68) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.51 unchanged from Friday's dividend yield of 2.51 (last year it was 2.31). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,746.31 down 1.54  from  Friday's closing numerator of 1,747.85. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $58.21 down $0.05 from Friday's average closing price of $58.26. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.63 (DD/HD) down  $0.21  from Friday's median closing price of $52.84. The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $154 ($174,785 - $174,631 ).

MarketWatch Mon. 4:16 by Laura Mandaro says US stocks  on Monday pulled mostly lower for April, but the Dow industrials managed to score a 0.01% monthly gain to extend its run into a seventh month, its longest such stretch since Jan. 31, 2007. The benchmark indexes all fell on the day as a weak reading of business activity in Chicago prompted concern about the economy. "We did not get off to a good start with the weak Chicago PMI number," said David Rolfe, chief investment officer of Wedgewood Partners. The Dow  DJIA -0.11% fell 14.68 points, or 0.1%, to end at 13,213.63. The S&P 500 Index  SPX -0.39% fell 5.45 points, or 0.4%, to 1,397.91, down 0.8% for April after four consecutive months of gains. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.74% retreated 22.84 points, or 0.7%, to 3,046.36, down 0.8% for April, its first monthly loss in four.

Sat.  WSJ pB5 "Dow notches biggest weekly gain in month" by Chirs Dieterich says solid quarterly results from consumer oriented stocks including Amazon.com overshadowed data on slowing economic growth, pushing benchmarks to their biggest weekly advance since mid-March.  Procter & gamble fell $2.43 after it topped 3Q earnings estimates but came up short of rev forecasts.  It provided a 4Q outlook that was below projections.

MarketWatch Fri. 4:16 by Laura Mandaro says US stocks U.S. stocks closed moderately higher Friday, rounding out an earnings-filled week with 5-day gains of about 2%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA+0.18% rose 23.69 points, or 0.2%, to 13,228.31. It added 1.5% for the week, its second straight weekly rise. The S&P 500 SPX+0.24% rose 3.38 points, or 0.2%, to 1,403.36 for a weekly gain of 1.8%. The Nasdaq Composite COMP+0.61% added 18.59 points, or 0.6%, to 3,069.20. It rose 2.3% for the week. Quarterly results from Apple, Inc. AAPL-0.77% , Amazon Inc. AMZN+15.75% and Boeing Co. BA +0.36% -- plus a slew of other companies -- helped propel stocks higher this week.
