The following are excerpts from Wed. morning's Blog.

A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution and Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 13,115.54 up 194.13 or 1.5% from Monday's close of 12,921.41. For the year the Dow is up 7.35%. Of the 30 Dow components all 30 gained. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Chevron and percentage-wise was Disney.

WSJ pC1 "Stocks continue their wild ride up" by Jon Cheng says Tuesday's surge marked the 6th triple digit moves this month for the Dow as many as in the prior 3 months combined. On Tues an auction of Spanish gov debt was well received & European officials discounted any need for a bailout of the troubled economy. Meanwhile, positive earnings reports & a rebound by Apple helped drive stocks higher. Coke is charted under Good News due to increased 1Q earnings of 7.9% driven by higher sales & prices in emerging markets.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stocks log big gains, but trade falls" by Vincent Mao says stocks rallied broadly Tues thanks to better than expected earnings & a successful debt auction i Spain as tues's action saw stocks surge in lower trade. The current outlook is still the market is in a correction.

Fin Times p22 "Apple breaks its losing run as $700 price target is maintained" by Arash massoudi says shares in Apple bounced back from their steepest fall in 6 months to nearly reclaim the $600 mark as all but 26 stocks on the S&P traded in positive territory Tues.

NYT pB11 "Upturn on profits & Spain's debt sale" by Victoria Shannon says markets rose Tues propelled by encouraging corp profits, a well received sale of gov debt in Spain, a recovery in Apple shares & the lack of any bad news.

USA Today p4B "Stocks soar as profit outlook improves, Spain worries ease" by AP says stocks stormed higher Tues after promising signals about the profitability of US firms and a strong debt auction by Spain. The Dow rose for the 4th session in 5 & posted its biggest gain in a month. 1Q results have impressed trades so far as Coke said its 1Q profit was better than expected and Johnson & Johnson posted strong results.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,732.95 up 25.65 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,707.30. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.76 up $0.85 from Monday's average closing price of $56.91. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.72 (DD/HD) up $0.51 from Monday's median closing price of $52.21. The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $2,565 ($173,295 - $170,730).

MarketWatch Tuesday 4/17/12 4:57 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks leapt Tuesday, pushing the Dow average to its first finish above 13,000 in more than a week, as increased appetite for Spanish debt calmed global concerns and tech stocks rebounded. Spain sold more debt than it anticipated Tuesday, with yields on 10-year Spanish government notes declining below 6% after the auction. “If there is demand, then investors can exhale for a little while,” Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners in Chicago, said of the debt sale. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +1.50% closed up 194.13 points, or 1.5%, to 13,115.54, its biggest point gain in a month, after rallying as much as 209 points. All 30 components ended higher, with International Business Machines Corp. IBM -2.39% contributing the most to the Dow’s point gains. It rose $4.73, or 2.3%, ahead of results after the close. The S&P 500 SPX +1.55% climbed 21.21 points, or 1.6%, to 1,390.78. Technology stocks rose 2.3%, the best performers among 10 industry sectors, all of which gained. Tech had been the worst performer Monday, losing more than 1%. After the close of trading Tuesday, IBM Corp. IBM -2.39% , Intel Corp. INTC -2.95%, and Yahoo YHOO +2.67% reported earnings. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.82% gained 54.42 points, or 1.8%, to 3,042.82, rebounding after two sessions of losses. Apple AAPL +5.10% , the biggest Dow component, rose 5.1%, recovering after a five-session losing streak. Shares of the iPhone maker fell 4.2% on Monday, with the S&P 500 losing 0.05%, the biggest negative impact Apple has ever had on the index. Had Apple not been a factor, the S&P 500 would have risen 0.14%, calculates Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P Indices. But in looking to Apple’s coming quarterly results slated for release next week, Silverblatt questioned how long the company can continue its growth spurt. “They have a history of blowouts, but what do they have to do now to impress me? Eventually margins have to go down, and what happens when every person in the world owns an iPod?” said Silverblatt.
“Everybody seems to be on one side of the Apple equation, so if there is any disappointment, any hiccup, you could see a pretty violent reaction,” said Nolte of the coming quarterly numbers. On the Dow, Walt Disney Co. DIS +2.45% and Kraft Foods KFT +2.39% led percent gainers, up more than 2%. Coca-Cola Co. KO +2.08% also gained more than 2% after reporting earnings and revenue that topped estimates. Johnson & Johnson JNJ +0.38% added 0.4% after the health-care conglomerate reported quarterly earnings. On the S&P 500, First Solar Inc. FSLR +10.28% shares rallied 10% after the solar-panel maker said it would cut about 30% of its work force. Corporate results that beat expectations included Goldman Sachs Group Inc. GS -0.74% , which also said it would raise its dividend. Shares ended down 0.7%. Advancers beat decliners by more than three to one on the New York Stock Exchange, where 710 million shares traded. NYSE composite volume was 3.4 billion, while Nasdaq Composite volume was 1.5 billion. Treasury prices declined, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year 10_YEAR +0.76% used in determining mortgages and other consumer loans, edging above 2%.The International Monetary Fund on Tuesday offered a more optimistic take on the global economy, saying the U.S. economy should expand 2.1% this year. Europe will likely contract 0.3% and the world economy should expand 3.5%. The trio of estimates were a bit improved from the IMF’s January outlook. Wall Street offered little reaction to economic reports, which had home construction falling 5.8% and housing permits climbing 4.5% in March. A separate report had industrial production unchanged for a second month in March. “The data didn’t look fabulous. It fits in with the overall view that the U.S. and global economy is growing, just not at a very rapid pace,” Nolte said.
