Post No. 1,587 The following
is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the
end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of
the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components'
SEC filings as of April 15, 2012.
A read of the print
editions of Monday's Barron's and Investor's Business Daily, Sat.
and Sunday's combined issue of each of the Wall St. Journal and
Financial Times, and Sunday's and Saturday's New York Times and Atlanta Journal
Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial
Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow
aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30
companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's
stock prices and related data.
Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe
Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 13,029.26 up 65.16 or
0.05% from Thursday's close of 12,964.1. For the week the Dow is up
65.16 or 0.05% from last Friday's close of 12,849.59. For the year the
Dow is up 6.64%. Of the 30 Dow components 23 gained and 7 declined. The
biggest gainer dollar-wise was Travelers and percentage-wise was
Microsoft. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was JPMorgan and
percentage-wise was Bank of America.
Inv. Bus. Daily
pA1 "Stocks in giveback mode; Apple now 11% off high" by Paul Whitfield
says for the 2nd straight day, stocks rose in the first hour and then
headed sourth. Friday's action was reverses off early gains in mixed
volume as the current outlook is the market is in a correction.
WSJ pB5 "Dow snaps 2 week losing streak" by Chirs
Dieterich says the Dow rose after better than forecast quarterly reports
from Microsoft & GE pushed blue chips to their first weekly
gain this month, while Apple's slide helped lead the tech oriented
Nasdaq into the red. McDonald's rose 66 cents after its 1Q earnings
rose and sales increased slightly faster than expected.
Sat
NYT pB6 "Earnings help markets, but day ends mixed" by Reuters says the
stock market on Fri was helped by solid earnigns from McDonald's, GE
and Microsoft, but declines in banks and tech shares pullled idnexes
down from their day's high. Bank of America fell 4.7% after its stock
was downgraded by an analyst at CLSA.
Fin Times p17
"Techs continue their losing streak but S&P halt slide" by Ajay
Makan says US stocks broke a 2 week losing streak but tech stocks the
standard bearers of this year's rally suffered a 2nd week of losses.
Tech stocks fell over the week a investors gave a lukewarm response to
earnings from the likes of IBM and Intel which both say share prices
fall despite narrowly beating analyst gorecasts of 1Q earnings.
Microsoft was the standout performer among tech stocks climbing more
than 5% over the week.
As of the close of the market on
Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found
at page B4 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Saturday's
trailing P/E ratio is 14.55 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of
14.49 (year ago it was 14.70); Saturday's P/E estimate is 12.32 down
from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.55 (year ago it was 12.65) and
Saturday's dividend yield is 2.54 up from Friday's dividend yield of
2.53 (last year it was 2.35). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on
Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009
when it fell to 6,547.05. Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing
numerator was 1,721.54 up 8.50 from Thursday's closing numerator of
1,712.94. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the
Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you
divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor
(0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the
price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The
average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's
Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.38 up $0.28 from Thursday's
average closing price of $57.10. The median closing price of Friday's
Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.04 (DD/HD) down $0.05 from
Thursday's median closing price of $52.09. The lowest volume was 3M and
the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If
Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of
each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could
buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the
close you would have made $850 ($172,154 - $171,294).
MarketWatch
Friday 4/20/12 4:45 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks mostly advanced
Friday, with two of the major indexes halting a two-week losing streak,
as better-than-expected corporate results overrode global concerns. “A
lot of stock prices are being made in Europe these days, but it is a
short-term phenomenon. Even though the economies are weak, they seem to
be doing what they should be doing, and that sort of behavior tends to
be rewarded,” said John Manley, chief equity strategist at Wells Fargo
Advantage Funds. “The market is coming to grips with what lies before
it. On balance, earnings numbers are more positive than negative,” he
added. After rising as much as 118 points, the Dow Jones Industrial
Average DJIA +0.50% gained 65.16 points, or 0.5%, to 13,029.26, up 1.4%
from the week-ago close and its first weekly gain in three. Microsoft
Corp. MSFT +4.55% led blue-chip advancers, up 4.6%, after the software
company said net income fell from the year-ago period, but its profit
and sales topped Wall Street’s expectations. Dow component General
Electric Co. GE +1.15% rose 1.2% after the aircraft-engine manufacturer
and financial-services provider reported earnings that topped Wall
Street’s estimates. Up 0.7% on the week, the S&P 500 Index SPX
+0.12% climbed 1.61 points, or 0.1%, to 1,378.53, with utilities and
consumer staples leading sector gains and technology and financials
lagging among its 10 industry groups. Apple Inc. AAPL -2.46% shares
fell 2.5% to $572.98, off more than 10% from $644, the record intraday
high reached April 10. The close under $580 sets the stage “for a fast
move down to $525,” said Richard Ross, technical strategist at Auerbach
Grayson & Co. Apple’s fall weighed on the Nasdaq Composite
Index COMP -0.24% , which turned lower in the final hour of trade, off
7.11 points, or 0.2%, at 3,000.45 — a level that has it off 0.2% from
last Friday’s finish and extending its weekly losing spree to three. For
every stock that fell, nearly two gained on the New York Stock
Exchange, where 966 million shares traded. Composite volume topped 3.8
billion. The U.S. dollar DXY -0.52% fell against other global
currencies, while dollar-denominated commodities rose, with crude
futures CLM2 +1.28% closing a nickel above $103 a barrel on the New
York Mercantile Exchange. But while micro concerns dominated Friday’s
session, macroeconomic issues will likely continue to be in play. “The
realization has grown that all of the problems of last year are still
present,” said Andrew Milligan, head of global strategy at Standard Life
Investments. Milligan cites the outlook for the United States, Europe’s
ability to keep its recession from deepening, China’s ability to
navigate a soft landing and the price of oil as the four primary
concerns of investors. “We’re particularly reassured by the breadth of
sectors seeing improvements; it’s not just industrial and tech, but most
sectors,” he added. Corporate results from outside the United States
are “perhaps more mixed, which is no great surprise, bearing in mind
some of the weakness in parts of Asia and Europe,” Milligan said. For
Manley at Wells Fargo Advantage Funds, the real test for U.S. results
comes in the third quarter. “If you look at consensus expectations for
the S&P 500, the first quarter was a little better than flat,
not a high hurdle,” with the same holding true for second-quarter
results, he said. But by the third quarter, expectations call for
double-digit gains “and I don’t think we’ll get that,” commented Manley,
who believes those estimates will be scaled back over the course of the
next three to six months.
