A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's, Investor's Business Daily, Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, USA Today, New York Times, Atlanta Journal Constitution and Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.
Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,849.59 down 136.99 or 1.05% from Thursday's close of 12,986.58. For the week the Dow was down 136.99 or 1.05% from last Thursday's close of 12,986.58. For the year the Dow is up 5.17%. Of the 30 Dow components only Home Depot and Kraft gained and 26 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Home Depot. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM and percentage-wise was Bank of America.
Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stock indexes retreat for 2nd week in row" by Paul Whitfield says stocks retreated for a second straight week as volume stepped up from the prior week. Friday's action was down in rising volume. The current outlook is the market is still in a correction.
Sat. WSJ pB4 "A week of worsts for Dow" by Chris Dieterich says the Dow fell for the 6th time in 8 days capping the biggest weekly decline this year after disappointing economic data from China & rising borrowing costs in Spain damped sentiment. Better than expected earnings from Google, JPMorgan and Wells Fargo weren't enough to keep the market from falling. Fin'l sector stocks led the market lower with Bank of America down 49 cents. Tech stocks slumped, Hewlett-Packard was down 53 cents.
As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.43 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.37 (year ago it was 14.79); Monday's P/E estimate is 12.55 unchanged from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.55 (year ago it was 12.73) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.52 down from Friday's dividend yield of 2.52 (last year it was 2.39). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,697.81 down 18.11 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,715.91. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.59 down $0.61 from Thursday's average closing price of $57.20. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.55 (DD/HD) up $0.03 from Thursday's median closing price of $51.52. The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,811 ($171,591 - $169,781).
MarketWatch Friday 4/13/12 4:37 pm by Kate Gibson Mandaro says U.S. stocks fell Friday, with the major indexes recording their worst week yet this year, as investors considered the implications of slowing growth in China. "The market dropped because China's economy is slowing down more than expected," said Jim Sloan of Jim Sloan & Associates in Houston, Texas. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -1.05% fell 136.99 points, or 1.1%, to close at 12,849.59, its largest weekly hit since the middle of December. The S&P 500 SPX -1.25% dropped 17.31 points, or 1.3%, to 1,370.26, off 2% from the week ago close. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -1.45% retreated by 44.22 points, or 1.5%, to 3,011.33, leaving it down 2.3% from last Friday's close. The indexes also fell last week, the first back-to-back weekly losses for the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq of the year.
