The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 13,204.62 up 113.9 or 0.87% from Wednesday's close of 13,090.72. Of the 30 Dow components 24 gained and 6 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was was Chevron and percentage-wise was Walmart. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was ExxonMobil.

As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.58 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.60 (year ago it was 14.80); today's P/E estimate is 12.32 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 12.32 (year ago it was 12.68) and today's dividend yield is 2.50 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.52 (last year it was 2.34). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,744.72 up 15.06 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,729.66. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $58.16 up $0.50 from Wednesday's average closing price of $57.66. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.81 (DD/HD) down $0.05 from Wednnesday's median closing price of $52.86. The lowest volume was  3M Technologies and the highest volume again was Bank of America.


If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,506 ($174,472 - $171,788 ).

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.87%  added 113.90 points, or 0.9%, to 13,204.62, with the blue-chip index up 1.4% so far for the week. Of the 51% of the S&P 500 companies that have reported first-quarter results so far, 72.4% have reported earnings above expectations, 11.8% reported earnings in line with expectations and 15.7% reported earnings below estimates, according to Thomson Reuters analyst Greg Harrison.

Bigger is better? Not for funds

“A lot of people are talking about beating, but nobody is talking about the recent phenomena of companies actually starting to raise guidance after two quarters of lowering,” said Jeffrey Saut, chief investment strategist at Raymond James and Associates.
Ahead 1.6% from last Friday’s close, the S&P 500 Index SPX +0.67%  gained 9.29 points, or 0.7%, to 1,399.98 and rising as high as 1,402.09 intraday. It was the index’s first time above 1,400 since April 5.
Telecommunications, followed by consumer-discretionary stocks such as home builders, rallied the most among 10 industry groups. Only materials and health care fell. Leading gains on the S&P, Citrix Systems CTXS +12.43%  rose more than 12% after the software maker projected 2012 earnings that beat estimates. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +0.69%  rose 20.98 points, or 0.7%, to 3,050.61, up 1.7% so far for the week. It was the third straight day of gains for the Dow industrials and S&P 500, and the second for the Nasdaq. After a tepid start, stocks picked up a bit of steam after the National Association of Realtors reported its index of pending home sales climbed 4.1% in March to a two-year high. Results from PulteGroup Inc. PHM +10.11%  also boosted housing-related shares, with the builder reporting less of a quarterly loss than Wall Street expected, its losses narrowing on improving home-sale prices. Pulte shares rallied 10% and Lennar Corp.LEN +5.71%  gained 5.7%.For every stock falling, more than two gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 780 million shares traded. NYSE composite volume was just under 4 billion, while Nasdaq volume was more than 1.7 billion. The dollar DXY -0.04%  dipped against most major currencies. Crude for June delivery CLM2 +0.11%  gained 43 cents to end at $104.55 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, and gold futures for June delivery GCM2 +0.92% advanced $18.20, or 1.1%, to finish at $1,660.50 an ounce on the Comex in New York.Treasury prices gained, with the 10-year note 10_YEAR -1.96%  yield used in determining rates on many consumer loans falling to 1.962%. Weekly jobless claims came in virtually unchanged.

MarketWatch Wednesday 4/25/12 5:01 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks extended gains into a second day Wednesday as investors applauded Apple Inc.’s earnings and offered muted reaction to the Federal Reserve’s decision to leave its monetary policy unchanged.Major indexes retained much of the day’s advance as Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke told reporters that the central bank was comfortable keeping monetary policy “highly accommodative” given economic growth was likely to remain moderate. The central bank stood pat on interest rates as expected and said economic growth would pick up gradually. “As expected, they really did manage to straddle the fence in their commentary, so we’re [the Fed] going to keep doing what we’re doing. It’s like the end of a ‘Batman’ show — tune in next time,” said Derrick Irwin, portfolio manager for Wells Fargo Advantage Funds.
The S&P 500 Index SPX+1.36% added 18.72 points, or 1.4%, to 1,390.69. The tech sector led gains, surging 3.2%; all 10 industry sectors were higher. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP+2.30% surged 68.03 points, or 2.3%, to 3,029.63, its first close above 3,000 since Friday. For every stock slipping, roughly three gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 823 million shares traded hands. NYSE composite volume was just under 4 billion, above its past month average. Shares of Apple AAPL+8.87% jumped 8.9%, breaking a five-day losing streak as a number of brokerages raised their price targets a day after the iPhone and iPad maker reported a quarterly profit that blew out expectations.“Apple’s huge positive revenue and earnings surprise should have a ‘halo’ effect over the stock market for at least one trading session,” wrote Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at Davidson Cos., in a note. “If nothing else, Apple’s astonishing fundamental performance over the last two years strongly suggests consumers will buy outstanding products even at very high prices.” On the New York Mercantile Exchange, oil prices CLM2-0.07% climbed 57 cents to $104.12 a barrel. Gold futures GCM2+0.06% shed $1.50 at $1,642.30 an ounce. The dollar DXY-0.08% fell against other major currencies including the euro EURUSD+0.1054% , while Treasury prices were mixed, with the 10-year note yield 10_YEAR-0.15% lately at 1.984%.Ahead of the open, the government reported orders for long-lasting American goods declined in March by the most in three years.
