8/19/13 Mon. am More Woes for JPMorgan

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,322  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's  & Investors' New Daily, Wall St. Journal,  Financial Times, New York Times,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Georgia - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 15081.47 down 30.72 or 0.20%  from Thursday's close of 15112.19.  For the year the Dow is up 15.1%. For the week the Dow was down 344 points or 2.2% from last Friday's close of  15425.47. Of the Dow components 8  gained, JPMorgan was unchanged and   21 declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise  was Boeing  up  74 cents and percentage-wise was  Hewlett-Packard up 1.81% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise   was   Verizon down $1.07 and percentage-wise was   Pfizer down1.39%.

Sat. WSJ pB4 "Worries on Fed move pound stocks, bonds" by Dan Strumpf, Matt Jarzemsky, Min Zeng  says a sharp pullback in global stock & bond markets has highlighted investors' worries about economic growth prospects as the Fed prepares to trim its stimulus spending.

IBD pB8 "Stocks fall in soft trade; idnexes test for support" by Paul Whitfield says stocks retreated in lower vol Fri despite options expirations which usually jack up trade.  The current outlook is the market is in a correction.

As of the open  of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4   of   Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Monday's opening trailing P/E ratio is  16.46 up from Friday's opening trailing P/E ratio of 16.49 (last year it was 14.31);  Monday's  opening  P/E estimate is  13.66 unchanged  from Friday's   opening P/E estimate of 13.92  (year ago it was 12.64) and Monday's  opening dividend yield is 2.46 down   from Friday's opening dividend yield of 2.50  (last year it was 2.64). The Dow's all-time high was 15,658.36   on August 2, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1963.85 down 4 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1967.85. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $65.46 down 13 cents    from Thursday's average of $65.59.  The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $66.80 (DIS/UNH) up 12 cents  from Thursday's median closing price of $66.68. The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $400  ($196,785 - 196,385) .

MarketWatch 8/16/13 Fri. 5:08 pm by Kate Gibson & Victor Reklaitis says U.S. stocks
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — U.S. stocks declined on Friday, handing the Dow Jones Industrial Average its worst week this year, with investors on uncertain footing as longer-term Treasury yields rose to two-year highs. The Dow DJIA -0.20%  slid 30.72 points, or 0.2%, to finish at 15,081.47, while the S&P 500 index SPX -0.33%   fell 5.49 points, or 0.3%, to close at 1,655.83. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.09%   shed 3.34 points, or 0.1%, to end at 3,602.78. For the week, the Dow lost 344 points, or 2.2%, suffering its biggest weekly percentage drop and point loss of 2013. It was the blue-chip index’s worst weekly percentage slide since May 2012, and its largest point decline since June 2012.The S&P 500 slumped nearly 36 points, or 2.10%, for the week, suffering its biggest weekly point drop of the year, but not its biggest percentage decline. The tech-heavy Nasdaq was down just 1.6% for the week, as Apple’s AAPL +0.89%   10.5% weekly gain provided a boost.
All three main stock indexes lost ground for the second week in a row.“Stocks are taking their lead from the bond market. Higher yields are not good news for stocks, but if higher yields come because the economy is getting stronger,” the latter would be positive for equities, said Kate Warne, investment strategist at Edward Jones. While stock indexes traded in a limited range on Friday, longer-term Treasury yields resumed their rapid climb, with the 10-year 10_YEAR 0.00% rising 5
With forward guidance failing to have the desired impact in the U.S., the euro zone and the U.K., financial markets will be looking to the latest FOMC minutes and Chinese activity data to drive risk sentiment.“Around lunchtime, the 10-year note got hit and the yield moved above yesterday’s high. If the yield would back off below 2.8%, stock buyers would be a bit encouraged,” Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel Nicolaus & Co., emailed in afternoon commentary.Jerry Villella, a J.P. Morgan Private Bank investment specialist based in Dallas, said that “real yields are moving up, and that’s a reflection of a healing economy. Steep yield curves do not precede recessions.”He believes the recent and violent move in yields will moderate, with the 10-year yield moving between 2.5% and 3% through the end of the year. Villella also noted that stocks still are showing sizable gains for 2013 to date.“Even after a pullback from the last couple of days, we’re still up year to date, and just like 2012, it coincides with a weakly growing economy. Two percent economic growth gave us 16% equity appreciation last year,” said Villella. The S&P 500 has gained 16% so far this year.

“Earnings-per-share growth is what counts,” said Villella, adding that 3% of that growth is coming from top-line, or sales growth, none stems from margin expansion and 1% comes from a shrinkage in shares outstanding due to corporate share repurchases.
