Post No. 2,338 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of August 21, 2013 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of August 21, 2013.
A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's News Daily, the Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 14776.13 down 170.33 or 1.14% from Monday's close of 15116.79. For the year the Dow is up 12.8%. Of the Dow components 2 gained and 28 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Coca-Cola up 3 cents or 0.08% . The biggest decliner dollar-wise was United Technologies down $2.36and percentage-wise was Bank of America down 2.62%.
WSJ pC4 "Dow slides to a two month low; investors dump JC Penney" by Tomi Kilgore says low volumes exacerbated the effect of the selling as investors fretted over tensions in Syria.
As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Wednesday's opening trailing P/E ratio is 15.41 down from Tuesday's opening trailing P/E ratio of 15.59 (last year it was 14.52); Wednesday's opening P/E estimate is 13.53 unchanged from Tuesday's opening P/E estimate of 13.53 (year ago it was 12.52) and Wednesday's opening dividend yield is 2.52 unchanged from Tuesday's opening dividend yield of 2.52 (last year it was 2.64). The Dow's all-time high was 15,658.36 on August 2, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1924.09 down 22.18 from Monday's closing numerator of 1946.27. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $64.14 down 74 cents from Monday's average of $64.88. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $66.11 (DIS/UNH) down 76 cents from Monday's median closing price of $66.87. The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,218 ($194,627 - $192,409 ) .
MarketWatch 8/28/13 Tues. 4:03 pm by Kate Gibson U.S. stocks the DJIA -1.14% shed 170.33 points, or 1.1%, to 14,776.13. The S&P 500 SPX -1.59% fell 26.30 points, or 1.6%, to 1,630.48. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -2.16% declined 79.05 points, or 2.2%, to 3,578.52.
