The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.44% ended a 6-session loss streak to gain 66.19 points, or 0.4%, to 14,963.74, boosted by better European and Chinese manufacturing data and data showing continued improvement in the U.S. labor market. The S&P 500 SPX +0.86% rose 14.16 points, or 0.9%, to 1,656.96. Energy and industrials led gains across all 10 sectors. IBD pB2 "S&P 500 leads decline; IBD 50 outperforms again" by David Saito-Chung says stocks closed a jittery session due to fear over when the Fed will begin reducing its monthly bond purchases.  The current outlook is the market is in a correction.

FT p22 "Stocks turn volatile following Fed minutes" by Dave Shellock says markets saw choppy trading as the result of the Fed's July policy meeting minutes.

A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

MarketWatch 8/21/13 Wed. 4:31 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks  ended sharply lower Wednesday, losing grip on a late-afternoon recovery, as investors weighed the Federal Reserve’s signaling that it remained on course to curb its monthly bond purchases by the end of the year.
Fed officials are “broadly comfortable” with Chairman Ben Bernanke’s plan to begin reducing the asset buying later this year so long as the economy improves, with a few Federal Open Market Committee members indicating tapering might be called for soon, according to the minutes released Wednesday afternoon. “The market has not fully backed in the prospect of it actually occurring in September,” said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott. Extending losses into a sixth session, the Dow industrials /quotes/zigman/627449 DJIA -0.70%   fell as much as 122.15 points in the immediate of the Fed release, only to repeal those losses and then resume them. Finishing below 15,000 for the first time since July 3, the Dow ended at 14,897.55, down 105.44 points, or 0.7%. The S&P 500 index SPX -0.58%   lost 9.55 points, or 0.6%, to 1,642.80, with utilities and telecommunications the worst performing of its major sectors, all of which closed lower.
The expectation voiced by Bernanke in June that the central bank would curb its $85 billion in monthly bond purchases by year-end has upended global markets, especially hitting emerging markets, which had gained significantly from the increased liquidity. Views that Federal Open Market Committee would signal a September taper hit currencies including the Turkish lira and Indian rupee, which declined to a record low. “I’m inclined to think it’s going to come in September, but it’s also going to be tapering lite,” said Luschini, who now put the odds of the reduced asset purchases coming next month at 60% to 70%. “Net-net, the market remains jittery, and will trade from economic-data point to economic-data point. The big one is going to be the labor report that comes out before the next Fed meeting,” he added of the monthly nonfarm payrolls report.
Benchmark 10-year Treasury yields 10_YEAR +2.62%   leapt 8 basis point to 2.895%. Staples Inc.SPLS -15.29%   fell 15% after the office-supply retailer reported disappointing results and trimmed its 2013 earnings and revenue forecasts. Lowe’s Cos Inc.LOW +3.92%   rallied 3.9% after the home-improvement chain reported a larger-than-estimated rise in quarterly profit and sales and hiked its yearly outlook. Shares of Target Corp.TGT -3.61%   slipped 3.6% after the discount retailer reported a drop in second-quarter profit.
