Post No. 2,334 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of August 21, 2013 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of August 21, 2013.
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's, Investor's News Daily, the Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & amp; Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 15010.51 up 46.77 or 0.31% from Thursday's close of 14963.74. For the week the Dow was down 70.96 or 0.47% from last Friday's close of 15081.47. For the year the Dow is up 14.55%. Of the Dow components 18 gained, and 2 (Bank of America and GE) were unchanged and 10 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Microsoft up $2.36 or 7.29% . The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Travelers down 36 cents and percentage-wise was Cisco down 0.62%.
IBD pB8 "Stocks post decent gains; Nasdaq only 1% off high" by Paul Whitfield says stock indexes kept to a tight trading range Friday as it was up in rising volume and the current outlook is the market is in a correction.
As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Monday's opening trailing P/E ratio is 15.66 up from Friday's opening trailing P/E ratio of 15.61 (last year it was 14.60); Monday's opening P/E estimate is 13.53 down from Friday's opening P/E estimate of 13.66 (year ago it was 12.52) and Monday's opening dividend yield is 2.47 down from Friday's opening dividend yield of 2.51 (last year it was 2.59). The Dow's all-time high was 15,658.36 on August 2, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1954.61 up 16.09 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1948.52. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $65.15 up 20 cents from Thursday's average of $64.95. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $67.14 (DIS/UNH) up 33 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $66.81. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,609 ($195,461 - $194,852 ) .
MarketWatch 8/23/13 Fri. 4:15 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks ended higher Friday, shaking off early losses after a disappointing existing home sales report, as some investors took the data as a factor that could delay the start of the Federal Reserve's reduced bond purchases. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.31% rose nearly 47 points, or 0.3%, to 15,011, helped by a 7.8% rise in Microsoft Corp. /MSFT +0.06% .
