Post No. 2,828 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 17049 down 19.71 or 0.12% from Wednesday's close of 17068.71. Of the Dow components 13 gained, Intel was unchanged and 16 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs up $1.13 and percentage-wise was Cisco up 1%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Verizon down $1.93 and percentage-wise was Merck down 1.09%.
As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.12 down from Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.22 (last year it was 15.99). Today's P/E estimate is 15.10 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 15.10 (year ago it was 13.43) and today's dividend yield is 2.21 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.20 (last year it was 2.44). The Dow's all-time high was 17138.20 on July 16, 2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2654.80 down 3.07 from Wednesday's numerator of 2657.87. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.49 down 11 cents from Thursday's average closing price of $88.60. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $87.75 (UNH/AXP) down 8 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $7.83 (UNH/AXP). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $307 ($265,787 - $265,480).
9/11/14 Thurs. 4:12 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova, & Carla Mozee says marginal gains on Wall Street were led by small-cap stocks on Thursday. Trading was choppy, as an unexpected increase in weekly jobless claims and falling commodities prices encouraged investors to remain cautious. The main benchmarks finished in positive territory after trading in a tight range and spending much of the session in the red. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.09% ended 1.8 points, or 0.1%, higher at 1,997.45, as utilities and telecoms led the gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.12% closed down 19.71 points, or 0.1%, to 17,049.00. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.12% tacked on 5.3 points, or 0.1%, to 4,591.81. The Russell 2000 RUT, +0.63% added 6.7 points, or 0.6%, to preliminary 1,171.72.Kate Warne, an investment strategist at Edward Jones, said that stock markets are still consolidating gains from August.“Until the Fed meeting next week, investors are adopting a ‘wait and see’ approach. Another factor adding to the weakness is falling oil prices that are hurting oil companies,” Warne said.Economic data: The number of people who applied for jobless benefits last week unexpectedly rose, reaching the highest level since late June. Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, dismissed the rise as Labor Day seasonal factors. “As a proportion of payrolls, claims are now close to all-time lows, so it would be unreasonable to expect a significant further decline in the headline numbers over the next year. Equally, though, we see no reason for claims to starting heading back up, and they are consistent now with payroll gains of 250K or more,” he said in emailed comments.Last week’s report of weaker-than-expected job creation during August had spurred speculation that the Fed would hold off on raising interest rates. But recent gains in U.S. Treasury yields reflect concern that the Fed may signal that a rate hike is in store during the first quarter of 2015 at next week’s meeting. 10-Year Treasury yields rose 1 basis point to 2.55%. Stocks to watch: RadioShack RSH, +9.56% shares rallied 1.2% as the electronics retailer said it’s in advanced talks with a number of parties over its strategic options. Actions may include debt restructuring and store consolidations. LuluIemon shares jumped following stronger-than-expected earnings from the yoga-gear maker. Shares of Lululemon LULU, +13.91% jumped 14% after the yoga-gear maker raised its outlook following second-quarter results beat expectations. Pandora Media Inc. P, +3.22% shares rose 3.5% after the music streaming company said it reached a multiyear licensing agreement with BMG for BMI and ASCAP’s catalog of musical works. Other markets: Hong Kong stocks HSI, -0.17% extended their losing streak to five sessions, while European stocks SXXP, -0.12% were mixed. Gold prices GCZ4, -0.05% fell for a fourth straight session Thursday. Oil futures CLV4, +0.22% gained footing and were pared losses after the International Energy Agency again cut its oil-demand forecast for this year.

9/10/14 Wed. 4:43 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova, & Victor Reklaitis says
U.S. stocks rose Wednesday, bouncing back from morning losses, as Apple Inc. and other tech stocks helped lead the way higher. Traders said while there was no single explanation for the turnaround, the market got a lift from Apple’s 3.1% jump and a new poll showing a majority of Scots favor remaining in the U.K. Investors have worried about Scotland potentially becoming independent after a poll over the weekend put those favoring independence ahead for the first time. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.36% rose 7.25 points, or 0.4%, to close at 1,995.69, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.32% added 54.84 points, or 0.3%, to 17,068.71. Both indexes snapped two-day skids, but remain down for the week. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.75% gained 34.24 points, or 0.8%, to finish at 4,586.52. The tech-heavy index is up 0.1% for the week. The Apple effect: Wall Street was upbeat on Apple following Tuesday’s unveiling of the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Apple Watch and a mobile payment system. Analysts deployed words like “magical” and “impressive” in their reports.
“That certainly helped the techs,” said Stephen J. Carl, head equity trader at the Williams Capital Group, referring to Apple’s advance on Wednesday. The iPhone maker was one of the S&P 500’s best performers for the session, and the IT sector fared best among the 10 S&P sectors.
Some stocks were shunned because of Apple’s moves. GT Advanced Technologies Inc. GTAT, -14.46% shares slid 14.5% after Apple said it won’t move toward broad use of sapphire screens, which GT provides. In addition, eBay Inc. EBAY, -3.09% shares fell 3.1% as analysts suggested its PayPal business will face greater competition thanks to Apple Pay.On the earnings front, Land’s End Inc. LE, +20.58% shares rallied 20.6% after the clothing retailer posted better-than-expected quarterly results, while Krispy Kreme Doughnuts KKD, -3.07% skidded 3.1% after the doughnut chain‘s adjusted profit missed forecasts. Fed jitters persist: The yield on the 10-year Treasurys gained, rising for the fifth consecutive session. Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial, said that in the absence of economic data, investors are remaining cautious until the next meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee. “Markets are sensitive to the end of QE and will be nervous until the crucial FOMC meeting and press conference next week. It is not unusual to see weakness after big gains last month,” Krosby said.Other markets: European markets SXXP, -0.05% closed mostly lower. Asian markets ADOW, -1.21% finished lower, with the exception of a small rise for the Nikkei NIK, +0.25% Gold prices GCZ4, +0.10% ticked up, while oil prices fell.
