by Dan Kolber

Post No. 2,835 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Thursday's Wall Street Journal,  Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution  & Daily Report (carries Blomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Wednesday at 17156.85 up 24.88 or 0.15%  from Tuesday's close of 17131.97.  For the year the Dow is up 3.5%. Of the Dow components  18 gained and 12 declined.  The biggest gainer   dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was DuPont up $3.42 or 5.2%.  The biggest decliner   dollar-wise  was Visa down $1.77 and percentage-wise was Caterpillar down 0.83%.

WSJ pC1 "Dow hits a record, buoyed by the Fed" by Alexandra Scaggs, Ira Iosebashvili says the 5 year bull market in US stocks got a new lease on life, as investors embraced the steady as you go  message the Fed is delivering on the economy & interest rates.  The Dow rose to a record & the dollar jumped to a 6 year high vs the yen.

FT p25 "Wall Street" by Eric Platt says Nelson Peltz launched an attack on DuPont urging radical changes.

NYT pB2 "Market rises on Fed's assurance of low interest rates" & AJC pA13 "Builder outlook spurs gains": by AP says shares of homebuilders jumped Wed due to an index of builder confidence for new homes rising to its highest level in 9 years.

IBD pB3 "Indexes barely advance; transports lead upside" by David Saito-Chung says the stocks market rose but gave up most of the day's gains even after the Fed made it clear it is in no hurry to raise interest rates as Wednesday's action say thin gains in flat trade while the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.

As of the open of  the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Thursday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.24 up from Wednesday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.14  (last year it was 16.35).  Thursday's P/E estimate is 15.10 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 15.10 (year ago it was 13.85) and Thursday's dividend yield is 2.20 up from  Wednesday's dividend yield of 2.21  (last year it was 2.39). The Dow's all-time high was 17156.85 on September 17,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2671.59 up  3.87 from  Tuesday's   numerator of 2667.72.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $89.05 up 13 cents from Tuesday's  average closing price of $88.92.  The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.03  (AXP/UNH) down 44 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $87.59 (AXP/UNH). The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.

If  Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made  $387  ($267,159 - $266,772).

9/17/14 Wed. 4:22 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova, & Barbara Kollmeyer says the U.S. stock market closed slightly higher Wednesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average reaching a record high. The main benchmarks swung higher after the Fed meeting and Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen’s news conference but trimmed gains by the end of the session. In the end, the Federal Reserve stuck to its view that it will keep short-term interest rates near zero for a “considerable time” after the central bank ends large-scale purchases of bonds meant to stimulate the U.S. economy.
Janet Yellen didn’t commit any gaffes in her news conference, nor did she give any ground to the hawks on the committee and in the markets who wanted her to signal that rate hikes are just around the corner. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.13%  rose 2.59 points, or 0.1 to 2.001.57. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.15%  added 24.88 points, or 0.2% to 17,156.85. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.21%  gained 9.43 points, or 0.2%, to 4,562.19.Tanweer Akram, senior economist at Voya Investment Management, said that while the Fed’s decision was in line with expectations, its subsequent decisions will still be contingent on data and the pace of recovery in the labor market.
“The fact that there is still slack in the labor market there is no inflationary pressure means the Fed will be cautious about withdrawing accommodation. In economic news, U.S. consumer prices fell in August for the first time in 16 months, largely because of a decline in the cost of gasoline. Separately, the U.S. current-account deficit fell to $98.5 billion in the second quarter from a revised $102.2 billion in the first quarter, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. A gauge of confidence among home builders rose in September to the highest level since November 2005, according to National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo data released Wednesday.    Macro analyst Francesco Garzarelli lays out why the Fed is unlikely to shift its tone in September and why the dollar’s rally makes perfect sense.Stocks to watch: Auxilium Pharmaceuticals Inc. AUXL, +44.89%  soared 45%, after news late Tuesday that Endo International PLC ENDP, +4.73%  will buy it for $28.10 per share in a cash-and-stock deal. Endo was up 5%.
