9/15/14 Mon. am Barron's Likes Procter & Gambles

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/
by Dan Kolber

Post No. 2,833 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Monday's Barron's,  Investor's Business Daily; Wall Street Journal,  Financial Times, ew York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution  & Daily Report (carries BlombergZ) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Friday at 16987.51 down 61.49 or 0.36%  from Thursday's close of 17049. For the week the Dow was down 149.85 or 0.87% from last Friday's close of 17,137.36 . For the year the Dow is up 2.5%. Of the Dow components  5 gained and 25 declined.  The biggest gainer   dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Goldman Sachs up $2.17 or 1.2%.  The biggest decliner   dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Exxon down $1.25 or 1.29%.

IBD pB8 "Stocks lose their grip, trigger distribution day" by Paul Whitfield says stocks couldn't keep the lid on their losses Fri say the action was down in rising volume while the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of  the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of  Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Monday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.16 down from Friday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.18  (last year it was 16.04).  Monday's P/E estimate is 15.10 unchanged from Friday's P/E estimate of 15.10 (year ago it was 13.85) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.24 up from  Friday's dividend yield of 2.22  (last year it was 2.45). The Dow's all-time high was 17138.20 on July 16,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2645.23 down 9.57  from  Thursday's   numerator of 2654.80.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.17 down 32 cents from Thursday's  average closing price of $88.49.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.91  (UNH/AXP) down 84 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $87.75 (UNH/AXP). The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $957  ($265,480 - 264,523).

9/12/14 Fri. 4:12 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova, & Carla Mozee says
The U.S. stock market closed lower on Friday as rising Treasury yields and the prospect of next week’s Fed rate meeting made investors cautious. The S&P 500 retreated from record high levels throughout the week amid speculation that the Federal Reserve may signal the arrival of interest-rate increases sooner than expected. A solid rise in monthly retail sales and stronger-than-expected consumer sentiment data had virtually no impact on stock prices Friday. The main benchmarks recorded their first weekly loss in six weeks, as investors continued to consolidate strong gains last month. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.60%  closed 12 points, or 0.6%, lower at 1,985.55, as utilities and energy-sector stocks led losses. The Dow industrials DJIA, -0.36%  dropped 61.49 points, or 0.4%, to 16,987.51. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.53%  fell 24 points, or 0.5%, to 4,567.60.Kristina Hooper, U.S. investment strategist at Allianz Global Investors, said that near-term small selloff in September and October is not surprising.“Retail sales data were positive and suggest the economy is growing steadily. But there is trepidation among investors, ahead of next week’s Fed meeting and whether the Fed will change the language over the timing of the interest-rate increases,” Hooper said.  “Scotland’s vote on independence next week is also weighing on sentiment. But in the long term, those issues do not have anything to do with fundamentals, which remain solid,” she added.Data: Friday’s data on retail sales and consumer sentiment pointed at an improving economy, yet market reaction was muted. Sales at U.S. retailers rose in August by the largest amount since April, raising confidence in the economic outlook for the second half of the year. The preliminary September reading on the University of Michigan/Thomson Reuters consumer-sentiment index rose to the highest level since July 2013 and topped consensus expectations. Colin Cieszynski, chief market strategist at CMC Markets, said retail sales data didn’t provide enough of a surprise to prop up markets.“The fact that markets did not react positively to data that showed good growth means that those results have already been fully priced into stock markets,” Cieszynski said.Stocks to watch: Yahoo! Inc shares rallied 3.9% and gained more than 8% over the past week, as the prospect of a big cash windfall after the IPO of Alibaba made the stock attractive. Yahoo holds roughly a 23% stake in Alibaba and intends to sell those during the IPO.Darden Restaurants DRI, -1.47% shares rose 1.4% after adjusted first-quarter results and sales exceeded Wall Street’s projections.Ulta Salon Cosmetics & Fragrance ULTA, +17.86%  shares jumped 21% after the retailer raised its outlook and reported growth in earnings and sales in the second quarter.Alliance Data Systems Corp. ADS, +1.99% which owns private-label credit cards and runs loyalty programs, said late Thursday it will buy Conversant CNVR, +30.29% for $35 a share in a deal valued at about $2.3 billion. Alliance shares rose 3.7% and Conversant’s share soared 31% to $34.94.Other markets: In Asia, stocks listed in Japan NIK, +0.25%  and Hong Kong HSI, -0.27% finished lower. The dollar USDJPY, +0.22%  climbed to a six-year high against the yen above ¥107.European stocks SXXP, +0.00% ended Friday largely unchanged. Gold prices GCZ4, -0.70% shed $7 an ounce, and oil futures CLV4, -0.62%  settled little changed.
