9/7/14 Sun/Sat Barron's Likes Boeing

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/
by Dan Kolber

Post No. 2,820 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Monday's Barron's &  Investor's Business Daily, the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of the Wall Street Journal & Financial Times, Sunday's & Saturday's New York Times &  Atlanta Journal & Constitution  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Friday at 17137.36 up 67.78 or 0.40%  from Thursday's close of 17069.58. For the year the Dow is up 3.4%. Of the Dow components  22 gained and 8 declined.  The biggest gainer   dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Nike up $2.12 or 2.65%.  The biggest decliner   dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Boeing down 77 cents or 0.61%.

IBD pB9 "Stocks reverse from bad start, but slower trade dims the joy" by Paul Witfield says Friday's action was up in lower vol while the current outlook is confirmed uptrend.

WSJ pb5 "Stocks shake off downbeat jobs figures" by Dan Strumpf says the S&P rose to a fresh record Fri due to a better than expected jobs report suggested the Fed will remain cautious re: interest rate increases.

FT p11 "Utilities shine brightest as investors turn defensive" by Eric Platt says investors turned defensive following weaker than expected US jobs growth.

Sat. NYT pB7 "Dividend search drives up utilities and S&P" by AP says a surge in utility stocks pushed the S&P to another nominal high Fri.

As of the open of  the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of  Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Monday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.18 unchanged from Friday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.18  (last year it was 15.57).  Monday's P/E estimate is 15.10 unchanged from Friday's P/E estimate of 15.10 (year ago it was 13.43) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.20 unchanged from  Friday's dividend yield of 2.20  (last year it was 2.50). The Dow's all-time high was 17138.20 on July 16,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2668.56 up 10.55  from  Thursday's   numerator of 2658.01.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.95 up 35 cents from Thursday's  average closing price of $88.60.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.67  (UNH/AXP) up 31 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $88.36 (UNH/AXP). The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $135  ($265,801).

9/5/14 Fri. 4:08 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova, & Sara Sjolin says the U.S. stock market rose modestly on Friday as investors shrugged off a weaker-than-expected jobs report. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average recorded their fifth consecutive weekly gains. A surprisingly weak jobs report indicated a marked slowdown in the labor market. However the initial reaction was muted, as investors appeared to focus on the idea that the creation of fewer new jobs than expected won’t alter the Federal Reserve’s thinking on interest rates. Analysts also cautioned against putting too much emphasis on just one month’s data. The economy added 142,000 new jobs in August, the smallest gain since December and well below Wall Street expectations for 228,000. Even so, “most indicators in the report were better than in July,” said John Canally, investment strategist and economist at LPL Financial. “After the initial knee-jerk reaction, investors looked into the details and at implications and realized that this report was not a game-changer.” .But Uri Landesman, the president of Platinum Partners, a New York-based hedge fund, said the weak jobs numbers may indicate the recovery is stalling.“In the short term, a few more weak data points may trigger a correction. The market is pricing in the good news but not a lot of bad news. From a technical standpoint, there is not much support in the S&P 500, as the index moved in a straight line up,” Landesman said. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.50%  gained 10 points, or 0.5%, to 2,007.71, with all 10 main sectors finishing higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.40%  gained 67.78 points, or 0.4%, to 17,137.36. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.45%  added 20.61 points, or 0.3%, to 4,582.90.Away from jobs: NATO leaders finished their two-day meeting in Wales on Friday, where they have been working on a new set of sanctions against Moscow for supporting pro-Russia rebels in Ukraine. Speaking at the summit, British Prime Minister David Cameron said the U.K. would commit 3,500 troops to a new “spearhead” force to react to Russia’s actions in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Ukraine signed a cease-fire with pro-Russian rebels that took effect Friday evening local time.
Separately, President Barack Obama on Friday said the U.S. would work with Western allies and countries in the Mideast to develop a strong diplomatic and political effort to degrade and defeat the “savage” Islamic insurgent group known as ISIS.Movers and shakers: Tesla Motors TSLA, -3.02% shares fell 3% as investors are pulling back after outsize gains made partially in anticipation of the electric vehicle manufacturer’s decision on where to locate its battery factory.Shares of Michael Kors Holdings Ltd. KORS, -4.48%  slid 4.5% after the company’s biggest shareholder sold its stake overnight.Quiksilver Inc. ZQK, -24.73%  plunged 25% as the apparel retailer’s third-quarter results missed analysts’ estimates.Gap Inc. GPS, -4.16% shares fell 4.2% after the apparel retailer reported disappointing sales for August. Other markets: The euro EURUSD, +0.05%  hovered around a 14-month low, following the ECB’s easing measures announced on Thursday. European stock markets closed mostly lower, while Asian bourses closed mixed.Oil futures CLV4, -1.06%  fell on Friday, while precious metals were little changed.
