Post No. 3,216 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 6/9/15 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 6/9/15.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 17935.74 up 31.36 or 0.17% from Tuesday's close of 17904.48. Of the 30 Dow components 22 gained and 8 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Boeing up $1.09 and percentage-wise was Procter & Gamble up 1.24%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth down $1.81 or 1.49%.
As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.21 up from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.11 (last year it was 16.44). Wednesday's P/E estimate is 16.12 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 16.12 (year ago it was 15.00) and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.33 down from Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.37 (last year it was 2.18). The Dow's all-time high was 18312.39 on May 19, 2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2687.83 up 4.68 from Tuesday's average numerator of 2683.15. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $89.44 up 57 cents from Tuesday's closing average of $89.44. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.63 (XOM/CAT) up 21 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $85.63 (XOM/CAT). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.
If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $468 ($268,783 - $268,315).
6/17/15 Wed. 4:23 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova, Sara Sjolin & Victor Reklaitis says U.S. stocks ended Wednesday’s choppy session with modest gains after the Federal Reserve left key interest rates unchanged and as Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen reiterated policy makers’ commitment to watch economic data. Yellen emphasized the importance of the pace and trajectory of rate hikes, saying the timing of the initial hike is less important. “Market participants should not focus on the timing of the first rate hike. What’s more important is the entire trajectory of interest rates,” Yellen said during a news conference,, emphasizing that after the first rate hike, Fed policy will still be accommodative. Yellen said Fed members haven’t yet decided if they’ll vote to raise rates this year, and the decision will depend on how the economy evolves.Still, analysts said the central bank moved closer to its first interest-rate increase in almost a decade, with Yellen noting that the economy has “expanded moderately”. The Fed’s so-called dot-plot suggests policy makers still expect to raise rates twice before the end of the year. The main indexes switched between gains and losses, but eked out modest gains by the session’s end. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.20% rose 4.15 points, or 0.2%, to 2,100.44. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.17% gained 31.26 points, or 0.2%, to 17,935.74. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.18% added 9.33 points, or 0.2%, to 5,064.88.Sean Lynch, co-head of global equity strategy at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, said the relatively muted reaction in the stock market was due to the fact that policy stayed unchanged.“We still believe September is the first possible month to raise rates, because that’s when Janet Yellen holds the [next] news conference. Since the Fed has been so transparent, it would not want to raise rates and not address it,” Lynch said. Lynch noted the economic backdrop is favorable for large-cap stocks over the long run, since the economy is improving.Fed funds futures are now pricing in a 22% chance that the Federal Reserve will raise its benchmark interest rate in September for the first time since 2006, and a 0% chance of a rate hike at the July meeting of Federal Reserve policy makers, according to the CME Group’s FedWatch tool.Futures markets are also pricing in a 62% probability that rate liftoff will occur at or before the central bank’s December meeting. Marc Pfeffer, senior portfolio manager at CLS Investments, noted that most investors are betting on a September or December rate hike and aren't pricing in the possibility of a rate increase in July, which he believes is still a possibility. Movers and shakers: FedEx Corp. FDX, -2.96% shares fell 3% after the shipping company’s quarterly profit fell short of consensus expectations. TripAdvisor, Inc. TRIP, +14.65% jumped 15% after it announced it is expanding its partnership with Marriott International by adding the company’s global hotel portfolio to the Instant Booking platform.Oracle Corp. ORCL, -7.37% shares fell more than 6% in after-hours market as the tech company’s quarterly earnings fell short of expectations.
Other markets: European stock markets closed lower as investors continued to monitor evelopments in Greece. With less than two weeks until the country needs to repay 1.6 billion euros ($1.8 billion) to the International Monetary Fund, the government still hasn’t secured a deal with its lenders needed to unlock the next portion of bailout funds. Asia closed mixed, with the Shanghai Composite Index SHCOMP, +1.65% rebounding from sharp losses earlier in the week. Crude oil CLN5, -0.40% settled marginally lower at $59.92, recovering from the dive they took after an unexpected climb in gasoline inventories. Treasury yields TMUBMUSD10Y, +0.27% plummeted Wednesday after Federal Reserve policy makers signaled that, while an interest-rate increase this year remains likely, the pace of rate hikes would be slower than the market expected.

A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $89.44 up 57 cents from Monday's closing average of $88.87 The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.63 (XOM/CAT) up 21 cents from Monday's median closing price of $85.42 (XOM/CAT). 6/16/15 Tues. 4:23 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova, Sara Sjolin & Victor Reklaitis says U.S. stocks closed higher on Tuesday, as investors shrugged off worries about unsuccessful Greek debt talks and awaited the outcome of a two-day Federal Reserve policy meeting which concludes on Wednesday. The stock market appeared to find support in stronger-than-expected data for building permits. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.57% added 11.86 points, or 0.6%, to 2,096.29, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.64% gained 113.31 points, or 0.6%, to 17,8904.48. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.51% rose 25.58 points, or 0.5% to 5,055.55.J.J. Kinahan, chief strategist at TD Ameritrade, said the grind higher amid low volumes is indicative of cautious trading.“At this point, there is very little upside in taking risk, or buying large long positions going into the Fed day. Investors have continued a pattern of ‘taking off risk’, as markets held major support levels” Kinahan said.“We do not expect to see sharp moves even after the Fed meeting tomorrow, but expect more volatility by the end of the weekend as it’s an options expiration day on Friday,” he said. The Federal Open Market Committee’s two-day meeting kicked off Tuesday. Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen will hold a news conference after the meeting concludes on Wednesday. Michael Antonelli, equity sales trader at R.W Baird & Co, said Fed policy remains the main market driver.“Markets hate uncertainty and at this point they would like clarity about the impending interest-rate hikes and some kind of resolution to Greece’s debt crisis,” Antonelli said. “While any initial interest-rate hike will hit markets in the near term, ultimately it would be good for the market to move past that and find its direction,” he added. Greece remained in the news on Tuesday, however, U.S. stock investors brushed off earlier concerns that the heavily indebted country could default unless it reaches a deal with lenders later this week.Tuesday’s key economic news: Construction started on new U.S. homes fell 11.1% to an annual rate of 1.04 million in May, pulling back from a surge in April and missing expectations. But the annual pace of permits for new construction, a sign of future demand, rose 11.8% to 1.28 million, the fastest pace since August 2007. One analyst described the upbeat reading for planned projects as “shockingly large.” Movers and shakers: Aetna Inc AET, +3.27% was among the S&P 500’s biggest gainers, rising 3.3% after UnitedHealth Group Inc. UNH, +2.16% approached the rival insurance company about a takeover deal. The latest move follows a frenzy of merger talk in the health-insurance industry. UnitedHealth shares rose 2.2%.United Rentals, Inc. URI, -2.61% was the S&P’s biggest decliner after Macquarie downgraded the stock to underperform with a price target of $80. Shares fell 2.6%.Other markets: European stocks closed higher after sliding earlier in the session. Greek worries persisted, but equities have recovered a little after hitting a nearly four-month low.Oil prices CLN5, +0.07% snapped a four-day losing streak and settled 0.8% higher at $59.97 a barrel. Gold futures GCQ5, -0.08% settled 0.4% lower at $1,180.90 an ounce.
The ICE dollar index DXY, +0.02% rose, as the U.S. currency logged gains against almost all other major currencies.
